2013 Preseason College Commitments

NCAAThe period between summer of 2012 and March of 2013 was full of announcements about Section Five players who made the various types of commitments to attend and play lacrosse after the high school graduation. What follows is a synopsis of those announcements that were reported to SportsFive.NET

 

Catching Up with the Winter Commitments

- There were a number of important college decisions made during the winter of 2012-2013.

Fairport NLI signingsThe Penfield Patriots held a small celebration on November 15th as they saw four seniors sign NLI. Defenseman Nick Kimmins selected Hartford. Andrew Schoeneck signed his letter to play at Bellarmine (Kentucky). Charlie Cummins will play at the University of Tampa and Connor Russell has decided to play at SUNY Albany. At Fairport High school, three lacrosse players were honored along with six other students (playing other sports) on  November 15th.

Senior midfielder Kevin Vaughn signed his letter to attend and play at Mercyhurst University, who won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2011. There are current 17 Section Five players on the 2013 roster.

Senior defenseman Joe Arcarese signed his letter for Siena College where he will join current freshman Justin Rehm (Penfield) next year.

Senior midfielder Jay Vakiener signed his NLI to play and attend SUNY Binghamton next year. Vakiener, who as been on the Red Raider midfield since his sophomore year also a Brine National High School All-American. (Continued...)

A large number of teammates and classmates took time away from classes to honor and celebrate McQuaid Jesuit senior defenseman Luc Bailey as he signed his National Letter of Intent to play at Ohio State next fall. McQuaid also made notice of the formal appointment letter received by Josh Swartzman for the United States Air Force Academy. Although the Academy plays in the NCAA Division I, players do not sign NLIs, but receive their appointments and then join the lacrosse team. (Continued...)

Luc BaileyOn November 21st Hilton celebrated their National Letter of Intent signing seniors that included senior attackman Derek Richards, who will attend Mercyhurst University next fall. (Continued...)

Senior Midfielder Benjamin Brooks signed his National Letter of Intent on November 3rd with members of his family including grandparents and mother and a host of the Irondequoit High School lacrosse team members present.

Also signing during the fall period was Aquinas senior midfielder, Billy Lombardi. A ceremony noting his accomplishment will be held with other classmates next spring.

The Greece Lightning celebrated the signings of two of their players during the fall period. Dan Hickey

Senior midfielder Nick Capone signed his letter to attend and play at Chestnut Hill College in Pennsylvania. The Division II school, plays in the East Coast Conference and ended the 2012 season with an 8-6 record under Head Coach Brian Dougherty.

Senior defenseman Zac Sapor also signed a Division II NLI last week. He will be closer to home after deciding to play at LeMoyne College in Syracuse. (Continued...)

Pittsford junior defenseman Nick Panara gave his verbal commitment to attend and play lacrosse at Fairfield University on November 29th. (Continued...)

In December, Palmyra Macedon junior attackman Ben Reeves made his verbal commitment to attend and play lacrosse at Hobart College. A Varsity player since eighth grade, Reeves considered Albany and Syracuse before selecting Hobart. (Continued...)

A large group of McQuaid Jesuit High School students received hall passes so they could show up to congratulate senior defenseman Josh Swartzman at a ceremony to honor his appointment to the Air Force Academy on November 14th. Although players attending service academies do not sign Nation Letters of Intent, the selection of appointees Josh Swartzmanare so keen that players moving on to the Division I teams are often celebrated for their achievement.

Service runs deep in the Swartzman family. Josh's father, Howard, is a retired naval Senior Chief and his mother, Peggy, is an army Colonel currently serving in Afghanistan. Although she was missing from the ceremony, Josh's father and brother were both beaming and ready for photographs. (Continued...)

Penn Yan junior attackman Rion Davison announced his verbal commitment to the University of Hartford. Davison scored 43g-27a in his sophomore year and was named to the Class C All-Tournament team in both his freshman and sophomore years. When he starts his junior season this spring, he will enter with a career record of 76g-34a. (Continued...)

Senior midfielder Cameron Pincus recently made his decision to attend and play at Boston University after his final season at Pittsford. (Continued...)

Geneva senior midfielder Sean Cunningham announced, in early January, his early decision acceptance to Hobart College where he plans to continue his lacrosse career under Head Coach TW Johnson. (Continued...)

Webster Thomas sophomore attackman/midfielder Kevin Hill announced, in late January, his verbal commitment to attend and play lacrosse at Penn State University under Head Coach Jeff Tambroni. (Continued...)

Canandaigua sophomore defenseman Michel McClain announced, in February, his verbal commitment to attend and play lacrosse at Penn State University under Head Coach Jeff Tambroni. (Continued...)

Senior attackman, Matt Kaser recently stated his decision to attend and play lacrosse at SUNY Binghamton after his final season with the Rangers. Last's year's MC-D3 "Player of the Year", Kaser was selected as a second team All-Section Five player and was named to the MC-D3 first team All League list. (Continued...)

Early March saw Pittsford junior attackman Stephen Quinzi announce his verbal commitment to attend and play lacrosse are Georgetown University under coach Kevin Wayne. (Continued...)

Michael Cuciti will be staying close to home when he travels from Canandaigua to study and play lacrosse at Nazareth College. The senior goalie started playing with the Braves Varsity as a sophomore, recording 37 saves in twelve games (64%). (Continued...)

- There were a number of important college commitments made during the fall of 2012.

Moore and BusseyAndrew Schoeneck recently announced his decision to attend Bellarmine University after his senior year at Penfield. Schoeneck had a strong 2012 season where the left-handed attackman scored 46g-17a and was selected to the first team Monroe County D1 list. He was also named to the Class A All Sectional team.

Webster Schroeder High School rising senior Kenny Nelson recently announced his commitment to play lacrosse at Mercyhurst University (Erie, PA). The attackman, was the team leader in goals and points with 29g-5a last year.

Penfield High School rising senior Nick Kimmins made a summer-time commitment to play lacrosse at Hartford after his final year with the Patriots.

Penn Yan defenseman, Jimmy Burdette recently announced his decision to play lacrosse at SUNY Albany after graduation his spring. A strong long-stick for the Mustangs, he is not afraid to race down-field and take a shot on goal.

Two more Canandaigua players have made their college lacrosse choices this fall. Senior defenseman Zak Bussey has decided to play at Mercyhurst and senior midfielder Connor Moore has selected the College of St. Rose.

The first verbal commitment of the year by a sophomore in Section Five was announced yesterday as Webster Schroeder goalie Willie Klan announced his decision to play at Ohio State after his expected graduation in 2015. He looked at Syracuse, Maryland and the University of North Carolina before making his decision.

Sophomore midfielder Sam Byassee considered Ohio State, UNC and Penn State before making a verbal commitment to attend and play at the University of Maryland after his 2015 graduation from Victor.

Over the summer months, Fairport senior defenseman Joe Arcarese made his verbal commitment to attend and play at Siena (Loudonville, NY). A two year starter for the Raiders, Arcarese had played on the Nike Upstate teams for three years and was a Brine National High School All-American, playing for the Rochester team.

Senior defenseman Dan Hickey has decided to attend and play lacrosse at Mercyhurst University. The Geneva long-stick, who scored 7g-5a last season also considered LeMoyne and St John Fisher before choosing to play for the Lakers in Erie, PA.

NCAACatching Up with the Summer Commitments

- There were a number of important college commitments made Bradley Voigtduring the summer of 2012.

Penn Yan rising junior Bradley Voigt made a verbal commitment to Syracuse University over the summer break. The strong left-handed attackman led the powerful Mustang offense last season with 62g-46a. After scoring 50 points as an eighth grader, he ended his sophomore season last spring with a career record of 122g-72a (194 pts).

After helping Penn Yan reach the NYS Championship last year, Voigt had a busy summer, playing as a Brine National HS All-American and with his SweetLax club team her played at the Tri-State and Yale Tournaments and attended the Maverick Showtime.

Rising senior attackman Danny LaCrosse recently announced his decision to play lacrosse at Colgate University (Hamilton NY). (Continued...)

Irondequoit "two-way" middie, Ben Brooks has announced his commitment to play at Mercyhurst University after his up-coming senior year with the Eagles. (Continued...)

Derek Richards has made the decision to play at D-2 powerhouse, Mercyhurst University, after his graduation next spring. (Continued...)

Churchville-Chili rising junior attackman, Trevor Hodgins announced today that has made a verbal commitment yo play at Ohio State after his graduation in 2014. (Continued...)
