November 21, 2012 - During the "Fall Signing Period" a number of schools held ceremonies to honor players who signed National Letter of Intents to play at Division I or Division II NCAA teams after their last year of high school.
At Fairport High school, three lacrosse players were honored along with six other students (playing other sports) on November 15th.
Senior midfielder Kevin Vaughn signed his letter to attend and play at Mercyhurst University, who won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2011. There are current 17 Section Five players on the 2013 roster.
Senior defenseman Joe Arcarese signed his letter for Siena College where he will join current freshman Justin Rehm (Penfield) next year. Off-season Arcarese has played for the Blaze Lacrosse Club and had been a member of the Nike rising junior and senior teams. He is also a Brine National High School All-American.
Senior midfielder Jay Vakiener signed his NLI to play and attend SUNY Binghamton next year. Vakiener, who as been on the Red Raider midfield since his sophomore year also a Brine National High School All-American. He played on the 2012 Under Armour Underclassmen Elite Stars Lacrosse Tournament and has been a member of the Nike Rising Junior and Rising Seniors Teams. He hopes to join four current freshman from Section Five on the team coached by former Nazareth coach Scott Nelson.
A large number of teammates and classmates took time away from classes to honor and celebrate McQuaid Jesuit senior defenseman Luc Bailey as he signed his National Letter of Intent to play at Ohio State next fall.
A three year player for the Knights, Bailey made his verbal commitment a year ago. He was named to the first team all league list (GRALL) last year. Off season Bailey has had a busy three years. In his sophomore year he was a member of the FCA U15 National Championship team. In his senior year he played for the FCA National team that won in Lake Placid. In between he played for the Blaze Lacrosse Club and the Nike Rising Junior team.
He will be joining junior attackman Adam Trombley (Penn Yan) on the NCAA Division I Buckeyes.
McQuaid also made notice of the formal appointment letter received by Josh Swartzman for the United States Air Force Academy. Although the Academy plays in the NCAA Division I, players do not sign NLIs, but receive their appointments and then join the lacrosse team.
A senior defenseman, Swartzman was also named to the GRALL first team at the end of the 2012 season. Off season he has played for the Blaze Lacrosse Club and has played on the Under Armour Underclassmen Elite Stars Lacrosse Tournament team.
He will be joining Section Five alumni James Burke and Alex Kober of Pittsford at the Academy after he graduates from McQuaid Jesuit this spring.
