Two of the three Section Five teams will advance to the Final Four on Wednesday. Penfield overcame a three goal deficit to force their game into overtime where they defeated Orchard Park 12-11. It was the second loss by OP to Penfield, and the Patriots were the only team to defeat the Quakers in this season. Penn Yan played a lose game for a while but the Mustang defense with James Burdette in charge was able to hold Silver Creek star, Zed Williams to 4g-2a. The Mustangs offense, however, came up large in the third quarter with five goals toward the 11-7 victory. In the first game of the day, Hamburg defeated Canandaigua 12-3.

On Wednesday, at St. John Fisher College, the UpState Championship (semi finals) will be played. Hamburg will play Jamesville-DeWitt (Section 3) at 3:30. Penn Yan will play Cazenovia (Section 3) at 5:30 and Penfield will play West Genesee (Section 3) at 8:00. Brackets for all three classes are available.

Hamburg 12 - Canandaigua 3

 --  Section Six Champion, Hamburg, scored 11 of the last 12 goals in their 12-3 win over Section Five Champion, Canandaigua. The Bulldogs held Canandaigua scoreless for the 24 minutes between their 2nd and 3rd goals. The Braves scored their last goal during a double man-up attempt in the early fourth quarter with Mitchell Schaefer assisting Brian Feldman. Hamburg attackman Austin Bishop contributed to the last four goals. He scored three and assisted on the final goal. The final goal of the game was scored by Ben Ott (2g). Ott's goal was scored in man-up. Throughout the entire game the Bulldogs scored four goals off five man-up attempts. Canandaigua's inability to stay out of the box played a role in their going down early in the game.

Canandaigua's Dan LaCrosse scored two of the three goals in his last game as a Brave. Midfielders Mitchell Schaefer and Connor Moore led the Braves with three ground balls each. Defenseman Joe Eddinger had a strong game with two one-on-one takes. For the Bulldogs, face off midfielder Nick Wilcox finished 12/18 (67%) at the draw with a team leading eight ground balls. LSM Christian Hollfelder finished with three ground balls and defenseman Adam Gawlak finished with two takes for Hamburg.

Leading in scoring for Hamburg was Bishop (3g-2a). Max Maxwell and Evan Hollfelder finished with 3g-1a each. In the cage, Jordan Kuss finished at 67% with six saves for Hamburg. Canandaigua's Michael Cuciti played the majority of the game and finished with eight saves. Lucas MacNeil and Jon Gelinas played in the final four minutes, but neither recorded a save.

 --  Section Five Champion, Penn Yan, scored four of the last five goals to secure a 11-7 win over Section Six Champion, Silver Creek. Penn Yan scored five straight goals spanning the late second and early third quarters.

The Mustangs scored the first goal of the game with Brett McMichael assisting Andrew Perl to open the scoring at 10:05. Silver Creek scored the next three goals to take an early lead. Frank Wolf scored on a fast-break with Kaine Kettle assisting. One minute later Zed Williams scored the first of his 4g-2a, unassisted. The game went back and forth for the next four minutes before the Black Knights scored again. Williams assisted the next goal with Brendan White scoring. Perl scored his second goal with an assist from Ryan Maciejewski to bring the game back within a single goal. Maciejewski finished with 5g-2a for the Mustangs. The final goal of the first quarter was scored with Kettle assisting Williams on a feed to the center of the field. The first quarter ended with the Black Knights leading 4-2.

In the second quarter, Silver Creek scored first with an extra man goal. White assisted Williams to give the Black Knights the three goal lead. Penn Yan scored the next two goals. McMichael fed Maciejewski a fast-break goal with 5:40 remaining in the half. The final goal of the quarter was scored with only 0:18 left on the clock. Rion Davison fed Bradley Voigt from behind the cage to bring the score within a single goal (5-4, Silver Creek).

Penn Yan scored the first three goals of the third quarter to take the lead. The Mustangs saw scoring from Maciejewski, Sean Emerson and Voigt. Voigt, Maciejewski and Davison assisted on the three goals. With 5:31 remaining in the quarter, Zed Williams scored his fourth goal during a face-off fast-break. Williams finished 20/22 at the draw with a team leading 22 ground balls. Penn Yan scored the next goal on a fast-break goal with Davison assisting Maciejewski. Only two seconds later the Black Knights scored another face-off fast-break. Williams picked up his own ground ball and sent it down to Kettle for the goal. The final goal of the quarter was scored by Penn Yan. Voigt got his second assist to Maciejewski on the goal.

In the fourth quarter, Penn Yan added two goals and held the Black Knights scoreless. Voigt (from Davison) and Maciejewski (from Voigt) rounded out the final quarter scoring. In the cage for Penn Yan, Brandon Maciejewski finished with 16 saves (70%) . McMichael, Voigt, Burdette, Shane Bloom and Jarrett Voigt each finished with two ground balls for the Mustangs. For Silver Creek, Chase Scanlan finished with five saves in the cage. In addition to Williams' 22 ground balls, Chase Scanlan, Tyson Brown, Frank Thompson, Kaine Kettle and Frank Wolf each finished with two ground balls.

 --  With 3:00 remaining in regulation Section Five Champion Penfield looked defeated and Section Six Champion Orchard Park looked on top of the world. Five minutes (of game-time) later and the story was reversed. Penfield scored the last three goals of regulation in less than two minutes to send the game to overtime. With 2:14 remaining in overtime, Jonathan Spaan drove along the right side of the cage and scored the game winning goal to send Penfield to the State Final Four.

The game was a story of second chances and outstanding performances from four seniors that weren't willing to let their season end. 2013 All-American defenseman Charlie Cummins, 2012 All-American face-off midfielder Connor Russell, attackmen Andrew Schoeneck and Jonathan Spaan did not allow their season to end in the final two minutes of regulation. Coach John Schembri said of the Cummins and Russell, "[they] were certainly voted All-Americans for a reason."

Connor Russell, who is usually a dominate face-off man, finished the game at 28% (7/18). From a statistical viewpoint Russell had an untypical day. However, in the second quarter he sprained his ankle. How did he get 18 face off's in two quarters? He didn't come out of the game. He took every draw except two to see the trainer. He fought for every ground ball, including the overtime face-off that he won to give Penfield the ball.

Defenseman Charlie Cummins was on fire for the contest. He led his team with four ground balls and scored the tying goal to send the game to overtime. Cummins helped clear the ball with 0:37 left in regulation and then went to the crease. After the Orchard Park goalie made a save, Cummins scooped up the ball and scored with 0:30 remaining to send the game to overtime. Cummins was a monster on the defensive end and kept the Patriots in the game to allow the offense to keep pace.

Attackmen Andrew Schoeneck and Jonathan Spaan scored 7g-4a between the two of them; Schoeneck (4g-2a) and Spaan (3g-2a). Nine of the goals had one or the other involved in either a goal or an assist (and two with both of them). The four seniors picked up a team that was all but defeated and gave them a second chance to continue their season.

Penfield scored the first three goals of the game to take an early lead. Max Spaan scored the first goal after catching an inside feed from Mitch Standera. Two minutes later Schoeneck got his first goal with an outside shot that was initially stopped by goalie Taylor Ferrino before it dribbled into the net. Ferrino finished with nine saves for the Quakers. Schoeneck scored again less than one minute later. Cummins brought the ball down the field and fired at the net. Ferrino made the save but M. Spaan was there to pick up the loose ball. M. Spaan quick fed the ball across the crease to Schoeneck for the goal. With 8:13 remaining in the first quarter Penfield led 3-0. Orchard Park fought back with the next two goals before the quarter ended. Spencer Cromwell scored the first goal with a high bounce that got past Patriot goalie Liam Guiton. Guiton finished with eight saves for Penfield. With 4:51 remaining, Kevin Goltz scored his lone goal of the game with a sweep from the top of the restraining line. Penfield led 3-2 going into the second half.

Orchard Park tied the score by the end of the second quarter. The Patriots scored the first goal with J. Spaan assisting Standera with a feed from behind the cage. On the ensuing face off, Mitch Wilson picked up his own ground ball and fed the ball to Adam Belica who looked across crease to Ralph Pagliei. The whole play took 0:09. Wilson had a strong day at the face-off and finished 70% going 19/27. With 5:40 remaining in the second quarter the game was stopped for lightning. The entire delay was approximately one hour. After returning to play, Penfield scored their next goal with another feed from behind. M. Spaan assisted Brian Wall with 5:05 remaining in the opening half. One minute later and John Januszkiewicz scored with a drive from behind the cage to keep the game within a single goal. Two minutes later Januszkiewicz picked up the loose ball on a man-up play a fed Tim Wagner to tie the game for the first time since the start of the game. With 1:29 remaining in the half, Penfield scored their third straight goal off a feed from behind the cage. J. Spaan assisted Schoeneck for the goal. The final goal of the quarter was scored with Pagliei assisting Tim Wagner for the Quakers to keep the game tied going into the second half.

Orchard Park outscored Penfield 2-1 in the third quarter. The Quakers scored first with an outside shot from Cromwell. Four minutes later Penfield scored on their first shot of the quarter. Standera assisted J. Spaan for the goal with 6:30 remaining. The final goal of the quarter was scored during fast-break with Nick Bammell assisted Januszkiewicz. Orchard Park led 8-7 going into the fourth quarter.

Wagner opened the scoring for the Quakers with a drive straight from the top of the restraining box. Wagner finished with 3g for Orchard Park. Schoeneck scored his fourth and final goal of the game with 9:34 remaining in regulation. He subbed into play and got the ball right away. He set up his drive and went right to the cage for the unassisted goal. Pagliei scored the next two goals for the Quakers to give them the three goal lead. Pagliei scored the first goal after his defenseman left him to pick up Cromwell who was uncovered. Cromwell dumped the ball right on the crease to an open Pagliei. Less than one minute later he scored again. After coming off a pick, Pagliei was uncovered and was 1-0 against the goalie for the goal. With 3:07 remaining in regulation Penfield was down by three and they looked defeated.

The game began to turn around with Anthony Mitchell scoring of a cross-crease pass from behind by Schoeneck with 1:51 remaining. Orchard Park won the next face-off but could not keep the ball in the box and the ball turned over. Penfield got the ball off the technical foul and came up the field fast. They set up a textbook fast-break with Schoeneck feeding J. Spaan. Once again Orchard Park won the face-off and once again they could not keep it in the box. Penfield took the ball up and gave it to Cummins. He cleared the ball and set-up on the crease for his goal. Penfield tied the game with three goals in 1:21. Orchard Park won the face off again. LSM TJ Szatko got right on the face-off man and forced the knockdown to give Penfield one more chance at the ball. However, they could not capitalize and regulation expired.

In overtime, Russell showed that he was not ready to loose. After losing the last five draws and 10 of the last 11, he knew that his team depended on him. He picked up his own ground ball and took the ball down the field. He fired on the cage, but missed. The Patriots had six more shots before their goal with only one on cage. With 2:14 remaining, J. Spaan took the ball along the right side and worked his way in for the game winning goal.
