There were sixteen games played in the Section today and a number of very exciting ones including a 7-6 win for Fairport over Penfield with no time left on the clock. Bath took Aquinas in double overtime and Marcus Whitman beat Mynderse in the first overtime period. Brighton had a 7-6 win over Canandaigua and Newark won a 7-3 game over B-H. Spencerport, Pittsford, Irondequoit, Gates, C-C,Hilton, Victor, McQuaid Jesuit, Livonia, Geneva and Pal-Mac all won their games today.
  

Fairport 7 - Penfield 6

  --    In what could be a precursor for a Sectional match-up, Fairport and Penfield battled in a close and highly contested game at Penfield. Fairport came from behind in the final quarter to defeat Penfield 7-6. The game was tied and/or Penfield led for 47:59 with Fairport taking their only lead with less than 0:01 remaining on the clock. With 0:05 remaining in regulation and the score tied, the Red Raiders started with the ball behind their net (after a missed shot). They worked the ball around to set up a double pick and Andrew Hays came around to take a pass from Brian Martin for the goal. This was Hays' only goal of the game. For the majority of the game long-stick midfielder Justin Rehm did a great job keeping Hays in control. When the game was on the line, however, the senior stepped up and showed why he is a dominate player in Section Five.

Throughout the entire game the weather was miserable. Although the rain didn't come down in droves, it was steady and misty. Overall the game was plagued with technical penalties. Six of the ten penalties were technicals including two delay of games calls and a conduct penalty against Fairport. Both teams capitalized on man-up situations with Fairport scoring on two and Penfield scoring on one.

In the first quarter Penfield took a strong lead. In the opening quarter, Alex Miles scored three unassisted goals for Penfield to give them control. Miles was demonstrative during the first half of play and gave his team his best. He was involved in five of the six Patriot goals. All four of his goals were straight drives at the cage where he beat his man and the slide. He scored the first two goals of the game and before Fairport added their first. Brian Martin, who led in scoring for Fairport, scored Fairport's opening goal with a feed from James Manilla. Martin finished the game with 3g-1a and with a team leading five ground balls. The final goal of the quarter was scored at 0:03 when Miles drove from behind the cage for the goal. Penfield led 3-1 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter each team added a single goal. Penfield scored early to increase their lead to the largest of the game (three goals). The lone goal of the Penfield game not to involve Miles was scored with a cross-crease pass from Matt Springer to Dan O'Brien. Springer drove from behind the cage, but was turned back. He looked up and saw O'Brien open for the goal. Fairport's Manilla scored their lone goal of the quarter with a drive from behind the cage. Penfield was leading 4-2 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Fairport got one goal back. The Red Raiders scored the first two goals to tie the game for the first time since 0-0. The first came during man-up with Stephen Danylyshyn assisting Manilla. Danylyshyn passed the ball from behind the cage to Manilla at goal-line extended. Manilla stepped in and fired into the back of the net. Three minutes later Martin made his second goal. The ball was moving around the top of the restraining line quickly and Penfield was caught off guard. Manilla called for the ball and Hays delivered. With 2:56 remaining in the quarter, Penfield scored again to retake the lead. Miles came around behind the cage and dumped the ball off to Andrew Huntington for the goal. Penfield led 5-4 after three quarters.

The fourth quarter, like in the second quarter, saw Penfield scoring the first goal to increase their lead before Fairport starting scoring. Miles scored once again with a drive from behind with 7:37 remaining in the game. On the ensuing face-off, Penfield was hit with an illegal check penalty. The Red Raiders took a shot at the cage, but Keith Keehn came up with the save. Keehn was impressive, finishing with 11 saves (61%) for the Patriots. During the clear, Fairport pressed hard and Hays came up with the take. He picked up his own ground ball and crossed the ball to Derek DeJoe for the goal. It only took 11 seconds for Fairport to tie the game for the third time. Martin came in off the wing, picked up the ground ball, and took at it to the cage. The Red Raiders were psyched up and in control. They only needed one more to cap off their impressive second half play. However, the final goal did not come until time had nearly expired. The last seven minutes of play were back and forth with both teams making plays at the goal, but neither team was able to capitalize until Hays scored.

At the face-off, Fairport's Jerry Warner finished 5/7 (71%). The usually demonstrative Connor Russell for Penfield finished at 50%. Of his eight wins, five were due to technical mistakes by the Red Raiders. Midfielders Huntington and Matt Bilak led the Patriots in ground balls with five each, Russell finished with four. In the cage for Fairport, Blaze Riorden finished with 11 saves (65%).

In the cage, Tyler Schweikert finished with ten saves for the Rangers.

For Gananda, Zach O'Connor, Mark Power, Zach Rink, Colin Brillian and Trevor Schraffenberger each scored one goal. Schraffenberger also added one assist and Ian Palmer added two assists for the Blue Panthers. In the cage, Steven Fisher finished with 16 saves for Gananda. No report from Gananda.

  --  Brighton scored early and held off a late advance to defeat Canandaigua 7-6. The Barons won on the shoulders of their defense. Sam Rabinowitz, David Hill, John Bender and Dan Pierce stepped up to keep the Braves from scoring. In the cage, Jordan Carey finished with 11 saves.

Brighton came out strong in the first quarter scoring three unanswered goals. In the second quarter both teams added two goals and Brighton led 5-2 at halftime. In the third quarter, Canandaigua changed their defense to a zone and shut down the Barons. The Braves held Brighton to only four shots on cage in the third quarter (and one goal). The Braves added three goals of their own to bring the game within one goal.

The game remained close in the fourth quarter. With 0:30 remaining, Canandaigua had the ball and a shot at the goal. Carey came up with a significant save to secure the win for Brighton. Max Brauer who was 7/8 in the second half, had a great night at the face-off draw finishing 11/17 (65%).

Leading the scoring for Brighton were senior midfielders Steven Cregan (3g) and Alex Lebowitz (2g). Pierce also finished with one goal for the Barons. For Canandaigua, junior attackman Dave Serron (2g-1a) and junior midfielder Matt Scharr (2g-1a) led. In the cage, Corey Griffin finished with five saves for the Braves.

  --  It was a game of back and forth in the second match-up for Aquinas and Bath this season. The Rams came away the winner in double overtime when Nick Rossi scored his fifth goal of the game off an assist from Matt Schlink. Rossi (5g-2a) was involved in the last seven goals of the game for Bath and shared excellent performances with Zach Reed (3g-3a) who was involved in the first six goals of the game for Bath. Rossi and Reed were involved in every goal for the Rams.

Reed reached an impressive mark for his career points this evening. He broke 350 points (161g-192a). With three more regular season games and then the post-season, Reed will continue to increase his scoring and may break the 200 assist mark.

Aquinas started off the game with four unanswered goals. Mike Messina scored two and Jake Vogl scored two (both assisted by Pete DiLaura). With 3:54 remaining in the opening quarter, Aquinas looked to be in control, leading 4-0. The Rams turned around in the final three minutes to bring the score back to within a single goal. Jeff Chapman added two (both assisted by Reed) and Reed added the third. The score was 4-3 Aquinas after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, both teams added two goals. Klay Heston and Billy Lombardi scored for the Little Irish. Rossi and Reed combined for both goals in the third quarter. Reed scored the first goal at 9:00 and Rossi scored the second at 1:10 remaining. Aquinas led 6-5 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Aquinas scored the first two goals in the first six minutes to take an 8-5 lead. Nick Weston and Heston scored for the Little Irish. With 6:48 remaining in the quarter, Aquinas had their largest lead since the score was 4-0. Bath scored the next four goals to take the lead. Reed scored (assisted by Rossi) with 2:04 remaining. Aquinas led 8-6 after three quarters.

The first three goals of the final quarter were all Rossi. Schlink assisted the first goal during man-up at 11:27. Chapman assisted the second (8:59) and third (2:21). Bath held on for two more minutes before Aquinas tied the game. Messina scored unassisted to force overtime with only 0:06 remaining in regulation.

During the first overtime period, both teams had shots at the cage and both goalies came up big to keep the game going. With 3:11 remaining in the second overtime period Bath scored. In the cage for Bath, Andrew Clark finished with 13 saves (59%). For Aquinas, Erich Wischmeyer played the entire 53 minutes and recorded 11 saves (52%). No report from Aquinas.

Chauncey Scissum scored unassisted for the Royal Comets with 8:13 remaining in the second quarter. After that it was all Pittsford.

The first of two stand-out goals for the Panthers were the game openers. James Burke picked up his own ground ball from the face-off and ran down to the crease before feeding Alex Kober. Burke finished 7/11 (64%) at the face-off draw for Pittsford. Later, in the third quarter, junior midfielder Marc Weyl scored the first point of his Varsity career. Weyl stripped the ball on the defensive side of the field, picked up the loose ball and took it coast-to-coast and for a pass to Tyler Aycock for the goal.

Duncan Ayer, Jake Bailey and Alex Paroda scored for the Knights. Kinney scored his second goal of the contest with 1:51 remaining in the opening quarter. The score was 4-2 McQuaid after the first quarter.

McQuaid Jesuit scored the only three goals of the second quarter to increase their lead at halftime. In the third HF-L's Jason Boike added one goal while Hadley and Gardy Webber scored for the Knights. Each team added one goal in the final quarter. Drew Tallon scored unassisted for HFL and Ayer scored (with an assist from Webber) during man-up for McQuaid Jesuit.

In the cage for the Cougars, Nick Beniamino played the first four minutes without recording a save. Stephen Leonard finished the game with four saves. For McQuaid Jesuit, Pat Sheridan played the entire game and recorded 13 saves (77%).

  --  Livonia defeated Bishop Kearney 22-1 today in Irondequoit. The Kings scored the opening goal of the game only 0:06 into play. Senior midfielder Nate Kessler won his own face-off with a ground ball and took the ball down to score unassisted. Kessler finished at 50% for the Kings (10/20) and a team leading ten ground balls. Between the pipes, Nick Hickey finished with 12 saves.

For Livonia, ten different players made the score book. Leading the scoring was sophomore midfielder Derek Bishopp with 5g-3a.   --  Geneva defeated Waterloo 16-4. There was some differences in the quarter scores. However, both teams agreed that Geneva led 10-2 at halftime. Geneva's scoring was led by sophomore midfielder Sean Cunningham (5g-1a). Cunningham has scored in 13 out of the 14 games for Geneva this season. The only game he did not contribute to was the 11-1 loss to Penn Yan. Today's six goal performance was the ninth time that he scored more than five points in a single contest. It was also the fourth time he has scored five or more goals in a single contest. Cunningham, who is currently fourth in all of Section Five for points, has positioned himself as one of the most demonstrative scoring threats in the Finger Lakes.

Senior attackmen Billy Eddington (4g-2a) and Will Brennan (2g-4a) also added six points for the Panthers. In the cage for Geneva, Derek Grillone finished with nine saves and Tom Lynch finished with three saves. For Waterloo, Charlie Eshenour, Elliott Messmer and Tim Wright each finished with 1g-1a.   --  Marcus Whitman led early, but it still took overtime for them to get their second victory in two days. Marcus Whitman won 10-9 with a goal from Matt Hey with 1:43 remaining in the first overtime period. This is the third overtime game for the Wildcats (they have won two). Hey finished with a team leading 4g-2a. Clay Wilson, who fed Hey for the game winning goal, finished with 3a for Marcus Whitman.

Mynderse started off the game strong, leading 3-2. In the second quarter the Wildcats started to come back and by halftime they led 5-4. After three quarters, Marcus Whitman held an 8-6 lead. In the fourth quarter, Mynderse scored three unanswered goals to lead 9-8 with 4:14 remaining in regulation. Hey scored his third goal of the game to tie the game with 1:32 remaining. Hey got the ball from Jeffrey Bero (2g-2a).

As time started to expire, Marcus Whitman was given two penalties which gave Mynderse a double man-up try for the score. Goalie Merritt Bailey stepped up to make two key saves and send the game into overtime. Mynderse kept the ball and the man-up advantage going into overtime. Bailey once again came up big for the Wildcats and gave their offense a chance to win the game. Bailey finished the game with 11 saves. For Mynderse, Tim Trickler finished with 21 saves.
