May 14, 2011 - With only one week left in the regular season, there were ten games played today in Section Five. In out of Section contest, Rush-Henrietta beat Lancaster (Section 6), Schroeder lost to Clarence (17-5). The Red Devils are one of the few teams in the State that are still undefeated. Aquinas lost of Corcoran (13-3) of Section 3 by a 17-8 score. In the closest game of the day, Spencerport beat Brockport 9-8 in overtime. Other winners included Irondequoit, Bath, Thunder, Gananda, McQuaid Jesuit, and HF-L.
-- Rush Henrietta and Lancaster (7-4) of Section 6 played a very close first half this afternoon, playing 1-1 in the first quarter and 3-3 in the second quarter. The 4-4 halftime score was broken in the third when Rush-Henrietta scored a lone goal to take a 5-4 lead. In the fourth quarter the Royal Comets scored four goals to the Redskin's two for a 9-6 win on the road.
Sophomore midfielder Chauncey Scissum led the offensive book for R-H with 3g-2a. Fellow sophomore Nick Binnert added four goals and senior goalie Mark Wagner made eight saves for the Royal Comets who host Pittsford on Tuesday.
-- Irondequoit scored two goals in the first quarter and added another five before the half on their way to a 13-8 win over visiting Victor in a morning game today.
The second half was close, with both teams scoring two goals in the third and four goals in the last quarter.
Junior midfielder John Maloney had four assists and senior middie Connor Kimball had three goals to lead the Blue Devil offensive effort.
Victor (8-6) reported that Nick Doktor had 4g-1a and that Max Kostyk added 1g-4a for the Eagles, now 10-3.
Irondequoit travels to Webster Schroeder on Tuesday while R-H hosts Pittsford. No report from Irondequoit.

Leading the charge were senior attackman Zach Reed (5g-6a) and midfielder Nick Rossi (5g-2a). Reed and Rossi are both leaders on the Sectional level. Reed is currently 3rd in total points (38g-37a) and Rossi is tied for 13th (29g-21a). Andrew Clark finished with 14 saves for the Rams (82%).
Sean Peck finished with 1g-1a to lead the Screaming Eagles. Cory Gray and Christopher Landschoot each added one goal for Midlakes and Brandon Sauve added one assist. Matt Brennessel played the entire game between the pipes and recorded nine saves.

In the cage for Greece, Ken Mohrman played the majority of the game and accrued five saves. Mike Zimmer played the final five minutes and recorded one save. At the face-off draw for the Thunder, Tam-Grimshaw finished 13/18. He also led the ground ball count for his team with 17.
For Bishop Kearney, junior attackman Dylan Miller finished with five goals. Junior attackman Andrew Chadwick (3g-1a) and senior midfielder Nate Kessler (2g-1a) also added to the Kings' count. In the cage, Nick Hickey finished with 15 saves and Kyle Miller finished with four saves.

-- Gananda outscored Batavia 4-1 in the first quarter and 4-1 in the third quarter on their way to an 11-4 win at home this evening. Eight different players may the offensive scorebook for the Blue Panthers. Leading that list were junior attackman Ian Palmer, sophomore attackman Zach Rink and junior middie Mark Power. Junior goalie Steven Fisher recorded 14 saves (78%) for Gananda.
Senior midfielder Kyle King had one goal and one assist and three others had one goal each for the Blue Devils who finish their regular season at Bishop Kearney on Monday. Gananda will host Spencerport on Tuesday.
-- Clarence (Section VI) increased their undefeated season to 13-0 with a win over Webster Schroeder 17-5. Clarence has three more games scheduled for their regular season including one more contest against a Section Five opponent (Aquinas). Clarence scored the first six goals and led 11-1 at halftime.
Schroeder was led in scoring by Liam Wheatley (2g). Tyler Mason, Jesse Calkins and Kenny Nelson each scored one goal for the Warriors. Attackman Nick Powell also added one assist. In the cage, Eric Saltrelli and Nick Russo split time. Saltrelli finished with 12 saves in three quarters and Russo did not record a save in the final quarter.

Nally (11), Ayer (10), Clark Hadley (5) and Josh Bauer (5) led in shooting for the Knights. Hadley also led in the ground ball count with ten. In the cage for McQuaid Jesuit, Brendan Caufield played 16 minutes and recorded one save. Pat Sheridan played the remaining time and recorded three saves.
For Gates-Chili, attackman Grant Ferguson led with 2g-1a. Midfielders Ralph Taliento (1g-1a) and Joe Drabin (1g) along with attackman Matt Martin (1g-1a) finished out the scoring for the Spartans. -- Hilton was in control of the game at halftime; however, HF-L scored the final seven goals of the game to win 12-9. The Cougars held Hilton scoreless for the final 23:26. Hilton was leading 9-5 before HF-L started their scoring streak. The game was tied by HF-L with 8:05 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Hilton scored the opening goal with a man-up goal from Evan Pace (assisted by Derek Richards). HF-L scored the next three goals to take the early lead. Jason Boike scored two and assisted the third. Drew Tallon scored the third goal for the Cadets. In the final thirty seconds, each team added one goal. Pace scored his second with 0:28 remaining and Boike added his third with 0:07 remaining. HF-L led 4-2 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter Hilton started to control the game. Hilton scored seven out of eight straight goals spanning the second quarter and the first goal of the third quarter. At halftime, Hilton led 8-5. In the cage for HF-L, Nick Beniamino finished with seven saves. Mark Detroia finished with six saves for the Cadets.
Leading in scoring for HFL were attackmen Tallon (4g-3a), Boike (4g-2a) and Connor Flaherty (3g-1a). The final goal for the Cougars was scored by midfielder Mitchell Kinney (1g-1a). For Hilton, attackman Pace (3g) and midfielder David Smith (2g-1a) led in scoring. Hilton controlled the face-off draw with Kyle Youngman going 6/8 and Harald Juergens going 7/15.

-- In the closest game of the night, Spencerport defeated Brockport in overtime 9-8. Seth Miller scored the game winning goal for the Rangers just 0:58 into the first overtime. Miller's goal was assisted by Matt Kaser. Overall the game was plagued with penalties. All told there were 23 penalties (12 for Spencerport and 11 for Brockport). Included in the count were 20 personal penalties (including three unsportsmanlike conduct calls) and two ejections.
Brockport scored the first goal three minutes into the game when Paul Kysor assisted Jack Burns. Spencerport came back in the final two minutes of the quarter with two goals. Both of the Ranger's goals were scored during man-up opportunities. Kaser scored with an assist from Marcus Palvino and Zach Goodsell scored unassisted only 0:35 later. With limited time left in the opening quarter, Bill Russell scored for Brockport during yet another man-up opportunity. The score was tied 2-2 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Spencerport's Bryan Stehm scored with an assist from Levi Basynnski. Brockport tied the game for the third time when Kysor assisted Benjamin Modafarri with 6:15 remaining. Kysor's goal was once again scored during man-up. With time expiring in the second quarter, Kaser scored for Spencerport to give the Rangers the one goal lead going into halftime.
Starting the third, Brockport tied the game once more. Russell added his second goal (with an assist from Burns) to tie the game 4-4. Spencerport scored the next two goals to take the largest lead of the game. Palvino scored both goals unassisted two and a half minutes apart. Brockport fought back with 2:02 remaining in the quarter with an unassisted goal from Modafarri. The final goal of the quarter was scored by Kaser with an assist from Basynnski with only 0:03 remaining on the clock. Spencerport led 7-5 after three quarters.
It was all Brockport in the final quarter. The Blue Devils scored three goals and held the Rangers to only one. Kysor scored two goals and Russell the third for the Blue Devils while Miller scored the lone goal for the Rangers. Brockport tied the game and sent it to overtime with 1:05 remaining on the game clock during yet another man-up opportunity.
Overtime started with another set of penalties. Spencerport was assessed a crosscheck penalty and Brockport was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Eleven seconds after the penalties, Kaser assisted Miller for the game winning goal. At the face-off for Spencerport, Miller finished 15/20 (75%). Basynnski led the team with ten ground balls. Miller also added eight to the count. For Brockport, midfielder Cameron Witthun led with seven ground balls. Carlos Ross and Geoff Catlin both finished with six ground balls along with John Culhane, Hunter DeLany and Burns each finished with five ground balls.
In the cage for Brockport, DeLany finished with 17 saves. For Spencerport, Tyler Schweikert finished with eight saves.
