-- Webster Thomas defeated Churchville-Chili 10-7 this afternoon on the efforts of their goalie Don Grace. Grace was an unstoppable force not only between the pipes, but in the open field as well. He finished with 12 saves (63%) and a team leading six ground balls. The first three shots on cage were all point blank shots that Grace came out of nowhere to stop. In addition, Grace personally ran closest to the shot going out of bounds and cause turnovers on four different shots.
The stats don't show it, but Churchville-Chili seemed stronger in the opening half. The exceptional play by not only Grace but the entire starting defense kept the Saints from running away with the early game. Chris Siderakis, Chris Dalton, Doug Passero, Mark Vaccarrelli and Conor Smith all came together to form a cohesive defense for the Titans. The second half, particularly after the three minute mark in the third quarter, was the turning point for the Titan offense. Thomas scored five unanswered goals spanning the final three minutes of the third quarter and the opening time in the fourth quarter. Additionally, the Titans scored the final two goals of the game (including an empty netter during press defense) to keep the Saints from mounting a comeback. John Zawacki (2g-1a) and JT Hauck (3g) were instrumental in the offensive turn around.
Thomas scored the first on Hauck's first tally. All three of his goals were unassisted. Churchville-Chili had trouble getting goals past Grace early and both of their first two goals were scored during man-up situations. Pat Bonafede and Taylor Kolmer scored for the Saints (Nick Gray and Trevor Hodgins assisting). Thomas scored the final goal of the quarter to keep the game tied. Joe Stacy fed Troy Crevier for the goal. Crevier was waiting for the ball about 10 yards from the goal and fired, side-arm, into the top corner for the goal. The score was tied 2-2 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Thomas scored the first goal to take the lead once again. Jake Giudice scored after a feed from behind the cage from Crevier. With 4:18 the Titans were leading by one goal. Churchville-Chili added two more goals in the second quarter to take the one goal lead into halftime. Jeff Gurbacki scored during another unsettled situation. He picked up the loose ball floating around near the crease and finished into the back of the net. The final goal of the quarter was the first straight dodge by the Saints that resulted in a goal. Hodgins drove behind the net after a dead ball whistle and scored against Grace. Churchville-Chili led 4-3 after the first half.
Ryan Yunker scored his only goal of the game on a drive from behind the cage. A usually demonstrative Yunker was hampered by the impressive Titan defense. Churchville-Chili led by two going into the late third quarter before Thomas' offense started putting points on the board. John Hill scored the first goal after scooping up the loose ball on the crease. Two minutes later and Thomas scored on a fast-break. The play began with a one-on-one take by Dalton and a ground ball from Passero. The ball was cleared up the field and Giudice found Zawacki open for the goal. The momentum was starting to shift to the Titans with 1:05 remaining in the quarter. Zawacki scored again with 0:32 remaining with a side-arm shot in the upper corner (assisted by Justin Bird). At this point the Titans were psyched up and looking for blood. Thomas kept up the pressure. The third quarter ended with Thomas leading by one (6-5).
In the fourth quarter, Thomas continued their pressure. Hauck added the first goal of the quarter during a slow clear. He took his timecoming over the midfield line and once he reached the restraining line, he drove straight to the crease and put it in the back of the net. The Titan bench erupted and there was a great deal of excitement coming from the reserves. Two minutes later and Hauck came in on an on-the-fly substation through midfield. He was immediately given the ball and he drove to the cage adding his third goal of the game. With 7:44 remaining the Titans were in firm control of the game both physically and psychologically. It was difficult to keep the Churchville-Chili players motivated but Coach Joe Aquilina tried to keep them up and as a result they made one more attempt at the game. The Saints added their first of two more goals on a drive from Nick Gray at 5:18 to bring the game within two goals. With 2:48 remaining in the game, they had another man-up situation and capitalized just after the penalty was released, but before Thomas could get settled. Kevin Widzinski scored on the crease with a feed from Hodgins. Widzinski's goal brought the game within one goal.
The Titans were still up and on the ensuing start Hauck won the face-off himself and passed the ball up to Giudice who crossed the crease to Hill for the goal in only 0:06. Hill's goal took nearly all the wind out of Churchville-Chili's sails and the Titans finished out the game. The final goal, scored by Giudice, was scored on an empty net as the Saints were pressing out to take the ball.
For Churchville-Chili, Jack Corcoran played the entire game and had seven saves. Defenseman Nick Bruno led the team wit6h six ground balls and defenseman Scott Shamp added another five. For Thomas, Crevier added four and Hauck added three to the tally. .

-- The Brighton Barons traveled south to Penn Yan this evening for a 6:00 match up at Mustang field. Both teams came into the contest with matching 8-2 records that included losses to common opponent Fairport and wins against common opponent Penfield. The Baron offense came into the game averaging 12.5 goals per game while the Penn Yan defense came in allowing just 5 goals per outing.
Brighton's Max Brauer controlled the opening face off and the Barons set up their offense. With Brighton passing the ball around and the Mustang defense being patient, several minutes ran off the clock. With 6:01 remaining in the first, Penn Yan's Adam Stork took the ball at the top of the box, ran hard down the right alley, and fired a shot past Brighton goalie Jordan Carey. For the remainder of the first period, Penn Yan's offensive unit kept pressure on the Baron's defense with Carey making several nice saves only to see the ball come back his way on errant clearing passes. With 2:43 remaining, Ryan Maciejewski found Dylan Yonts sweeping from left to right in front of the crease and Penn Yan increased their lead to 2-0. Less than a minute later following an Anthony Luppino win at the "X", Ryan Maciejewski scored on a pass from Jeremy Bunn and the period ended with the Mustangs up 3-0.
Defense was the name of the game in the second period for both teams as they each team tallied just one goal each over the next twelve minutes. Penn Yan freshman goalie Brandon Maciejewski came up with four big saves in the period, many at close range. Carey turned away two Penn Yan shots on goal. At the 4:31 mark of the second, Penn Yan intercepted a clearing attempt and sophomore Ryan Maciejewski finish his 1-on-1 with the goalie. Brighton's CJ Wool took a pass from Kurt Minges with 2:38 remaining in the half to score. At the half, it was 4-1 Penn Yan.
The third quarter started with a PY face off win and just 25 seconds in, Dylan Yonts, running hard left, beat Carey and extended their lead to 5-1. The Mustang defense continue its aggressive play by knocking down a number of Baron pass attempts, lifting on the hands Brighton's shooters not allowing them to extend their arms for shots, and winning the ground ball battles in holding Brighton's offense scoreless in the third. The Mustang offense tallied two more third quarter goals pushing the lead to 7-1 by the end of the quarter.
The fourth quarter began with a Brighton win at the face-off but the swarming Mustang defense quickly put ball on the ground. PY pole Jimmy Burdette picked up the ground ball and ran the length of the field flipping a pass to Yonts who quickly found Jeremy Bunn on the left pipe for a fast break goal. Brighton scored the next goal when senior Alex Lebowitz ran hard down the right alley and scored unassisted at the 8:06 mark of the final period. Penn Yan closed out the scoring with two more goals, both scored by Yonts and the game ended with a 10-2 Penn Yan victory.
-- Livonia came into today's contest against McQuaid Jesuit with three losses; one to each of the other GRALL teams (including one to McQuaid).
