-- There was only one game in the Section today and although it was originally scheduled as a "Friday Night Lights" game at the Academy, field conditions required that it be moved to Evans Field at 11:00 AM. The Penn Yan Mustangs used steady scoring and an aggressive defense as they won a 10-4 victory over the Braves from Canandaigua.
Penn Yan started out quickly, scoring the first of their two first quarter goals at 10:51 when senior midfielder Adam Stork took the ball from "way out front" and drove to the cage for an unassisted goal. After a standout clearing effort by sophomore defenseman James Burdette, freshmen attackmen Rion Davison and Ryan Maciejewski hooked up for a goal. It was the first of his Davison's two goals in the game. Canandaigua's offensive game plan called for taking a great deal of time off the clock, and they were successful in moving the ball about the box each time they gained possession. They scored their first goal with 1:33 left in the quarter when they found a clearing inside fast break that has DJ Goldstein hitting junior middie Matt Scharr for the goal. The first quarter ended up with Penn Yan up 2-1.
The second quarter was much like the first with Penn Yan scoring two and Canandaigua one goal. In a similar pattern, Stork scored the first goal on a sweep from left to right for an unassisted goal at 10:49. With Penn Yan up 3-1, the Braves came back two minute later on a feed to the high crease by Scharr to senior attackman Evan Helming. CA saw much more ball time in the second quarter and moved it better than in the opening quarter. Penn Yan missed a number of opportunities while trying to force the ball through Stork, but did score the final goal of the half at 5:48. Senior midfielder Anthony Luppino scored from top left with a strong sidearm shot to the high corner. The Mustangs led at the half 4-2.
Each team added one goal to their scored in the third quarter. Penn Yan started, at 7:26 in man up on a drive from behind the cage by Dylan Yonts that became a feed to Davison cutting toward the goal from out front. After a ms-thrown ball in the Penn Yan offense, Scharr picked up the loose ball and started an inside fast break that resulted in an feed from senior attackman Nic Wood to junior attackman Dave Serron. After three quarters Penn Yan was still in the lead, 5-3.
The rivalry between Penn Yan and Canandaigua is a long-standing tradition and the Mustangs were anxious to make a statement as they added five more goals in the last quarter while holding the Braves to s single unassisted goal by Scharr at 8:42. The Mustang defense was relentless throughout the game, plying aggressively on the hand and playing hard on every ground ball. By contrast, the Braves long sticks often just placed their sticks across the chest of the offensive players and tried to push ground balls out to open areas.
Penn Yan started the scoring in the fourth just twenty-two seconds after the opening whistle. Stork scored after picking up the face off ground ball. He then circled back to the center X and ran straight at the goal. After Scharr's goal, Penn Yan made four quick passes ending with a feed from Yonts to freshman attackman Bradley Voigt for a 7-4 Mustang lead. Less than a minute later Stork scored the last of his four goals in the game the same way he scored his third, with a long run straight at the CA goalie.
Exactly one minute later Ryan Maciejewski scored on a tight cut from behind the cage to the goalies right. As he crossed the goal line extended he was knocked into the air, and still managed to get the shot off, one-handed. He scored the last goal of the game at 4:28 in man up while driving to the crease. He received the pass from Yonts (who finished the day with 3a).
Both goalies had moments of brilliance, making spectacular point blank saves that looked to be game-changers. Penn Yan freshman goalie Brandon Maciejewski recorded seven saves (64%). Canandaigua's Corey Griffin played 37 minutes and had eight saves. Mike Cuciti played the last five minutes and made one save and had no goals allowed.
