Duxbury used a third quarter flurry of goals to nail down a 10-7 victory over Irondequoit this morning. Geneva posted five goals late in the game but lost in overtime to Canandaigua (11-10) and Penn Yan defeated Lakeland/Panas 8-5 this afternoon. The other winners were Victor over Hilton (15-10), R-H over Schroeder (10-5) and Pittsford or Aquinas (11-2).

  --  Billed as a "National Watch Game" and ranked 25th in the nation by Inside Lacrosse, the Dragons of Duxbury (Mass) beat Irondequoit for the second time in two years. The game was not quite as close as last year's game held at Harvard University, which Duxbury won 5-4 on an end of the game goal by Paul Hellar. Hellar was back again this year, before heading off to Fairfield next fall, and scored two goals in the 10-7 win.

The first quarter saw only one score, an unassisted goal by Chris Williams in Duxbury's first possession as he moved the ball down field from a clear and took the ball straight to goalie Eric Fisher. The first quarter ended with the Dragons up 1-0. The Duxbury defense made a statement early in the game, promising to play a high-pressured stick-on-stick play against the game and to hustle for every ground ball.

The Eagles, who are used to a little less pressure on their offensive players, adapted in the second quarter after Duxbury increased their lead to 3-0 on goals by Bryan Berry and Hellar. Berry scored at 10:07 on a reverse dodge from the top of the box and Hellar scored on a drive from the back right, close to the crease, after beating his defenseman for a one-on-one with Fisher.

Junior attackman Jake Schmidt started the scoring for the Eagles at 5:47 on a pass from behind the net by senior Max Kostyk. Schmidt, who ended the game with 2g-1a, received the ball at the GLE. He took a couple of steps and threw the ball in the far side of Henry Buonagurio, in the net for Duxbury. Three minutes later, Sam Sweet came from behind the net in man up to sneak the ball into the inside corner and gave the Dragons a 4-1 lead. Irondequoit returned, however with two goals before the half. Schmidt started a bull dodge that ended up knocking his defenseman down. He then took a step back and threw a hard side arm shot into the net. With 0:16 left junior attackman Nick Doktor snuck one into the corner with the Eagles up two men and the half ended with Duxbury up 4-3.

The third quarter started out with a series of ties, starting with Max Kostyk's break-away to a one-on-one shot past Buonagurio. Two minutes later, the Dragons went back in the lead with a shot from the top right by Berry. The Eagles came right back thirty seconds later Schmidt set a textbook back pick just behind the goal. The pick freed up Doktor for a point-blank shot, tying the game at 5-5.

Duxbury then took firm control of the game, scoring the next four goals in a row. The first three were unassisted goals, starting with Kane Haffey scoring on a broken clear and Hellar scoring on another switchback for a far-side shot high on stick side. Long stick middie Reilly Naton scored soon after he received a ball during a ground ball scrum at midfield. He scored with his long stick on an outside overhand shot from top right. Haffey finished the quarter's scoring after another broken clear. Sweet received the ball from up field and after faking a one-on-one shot with Fisher, dished the ball cross-crease to Haffey for the finish. The quarter ended with the Dragons up 9-5.

After a long scoring draught, the result of continued pressure by the Dragon defense and a more conservative offense, Emmy Poccia took the ball from Doktor (behind the cage) and scored on a stick side high corner shot at 4:23. Berry scored his third and last goal of the game at 3:13 as he ran straight in from the top of the box. Poccia ended the scoring with a backside pass from Schmidt with 1:47 remaining.

Both goalies made a number of spectacular, game-turning saves. Buonagurio, who will play at Drexel next fall, finished the game with ten saves (59%). Eric Fisher finished with fourteen saves (58%).

Although the very cold temperatures and gray skies made this a tough game to watch, the lacrosse lived up to its billing. The Dragon defense of Peter Willauer, Jay McDermott (Syracuse) and Matt O`Keefe (Johns Hopkins) were demonstrative and once the Eagles thought through their plan, they played well against them. There were some classic match ups and a few mismatches, but the two teams played good lacrosse. The winning difference came from dominating defensive play and the measured control of the ball when needed.

Duxbury (5-2) goes to Section II, to take on Niskayuna on Saturday. Irondequoit travels to Fairport on Tuesday.    

Gates Chili 10 - Spencerport 7

  --  Gates-Chili got their second win of the season with a 10-7 win over Spencerport. The Spartans looked for retaliation for their 17-7 loss to the Rangers just one week ago today.

Spencerport started the game strong, scoring five of the first six goals. In the first quarter the Rangers led 4-1. Dom Gruttadauria, Bryan Stehm (2) and Ben Tribunella scored for Spencerport. The lone Gates-Chili goal was scored by London Booker (assisted by Matt Dakin). Spencerport looked to be putting together a repeat of their first contest of the season.

Spencerport scored the first goal of the second quarter only 0:12 into the quarter. Matt Kaser scored (assisted by Seth Miller). With a 5-1 lead the Rangers were in control. However, the Spartans had other thoughts in mind and spanning the remaining three quarters Gates-Chili scored eight unanswered goals to take the 9-5 lead with 10:05 remaining in the fourth quarter. Of the eight goals, Grant Ferguson was responsible for five. In scoring five more points this season, Ferguson became the highest scoring person in Gates-Chili history. Ferguson has 186 career Varsity points (123-63) surpassing the previous record set by Andy Hilton (183 career points).

In the cage, Brian Lane played all but one minute for Gates-Chili and finished with nine saves. Tyler Jacobson played one minute and recorded a single save. For Spencerport, Tyler Schweikert played the entire game and had seven saves.

  --  R-H fought back in the second quarter to defeat Webster Schroeder 10-5. The Warriors took the early 3-1 lead after the first quarter; however, the Royal Comets scored four unanswered goals in the second quarter (including two in man-up) to take the lead. Once R-H took the lead, they never looked back and kept adding on goals in the third (2-1) and fourth (3-1) quarters.

Schroeder scored the first goal of the game during a fast-break with Brandon Harris driving down the left side of the field and finishing into the back of the net. Harris finished with 2g for the Warriors. R-H tied the score a minute later with Torry Whitcher's first goal. Whitcher finished with 3g-2a for the Royal Comets. He was a demonstrative force the entire game and finished with four ground balls, 1/2 at the face-off, and with 6/6 shots on cage. Schroeder added two more goals before the end of the quarter. Tyler Mason scored on a fast-break with an assist from Nick Powell with 6:33 remaining in the quarter. With 2:59 remaining Cody Henry scored with a drive from the top of the restraining line. Schroeder looked to be in control and led 3-1 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, it was a completely different story. The Royal Comets dominated the quarter on offense and defense. Offensively, R-H scored four goals on four straight shots. Whitcher scored his second goal with a drive down the left side. Nick Binnert and Matt Leonard hooked up on the tying goal with duel cuts towards the crease with Leonard feeding Binnert. With 8:31 remaining in the opening half, the score was tied at 3-3. The next two goals were both scored during man-up. Overall, R-H was 3/6 in extra-man opportunities; while Schroeder was only 1/6. The only man-up goal that Schroeder converted on was during a two-man-up period in the third quarter. Kenny Pattridge scored (assisted by Whitcher) and Whitcher scored his third goal (assisted by Jackson Sadowski). The first half ended with R-H leading 5-3.

In the third quarter, Schroeder scored first to keep the game within one goal. Harris added his second goal (assisted by Mason) during a two-man-up opportunity. The Royal Comets kept up the pressure and scored the next two goals before time expired in the third quarter. Binnert added both goals with the first assisted by Whitcher (during man-up) and the second assisted by Chauncey Scissum. The third quarter ended with R-H leading 7-4.

Schroeder scored the opening goal of the final quarter as well. The Warriors looked great during the opening play. The ball was moved quickly and carefully around behind the cage with a number of swift and clean passes. The resulting movement found Kenny Nelson open on the crease and Nick Powell dropped the ball in for the goal. R-H scored the final three goals of the game to cement the victory. Sadowski, Scissum and Leonard each added one goal. In the final minutes of play, the Royal Comets demonstrated how to control the ball. They kept the ball in their possession and ran out the remaining clock.

In the cage for Schroeder Eric Saltrelli looked better than his 10 saves (50%). Saltrelli also had five ground balls for the Warriors. For R-H, Mark Wagner finished with nine saves (64%). Defenseman Chris Swanson led in ground balls for the Royal Comets with nine. Scissum and Tyler Badger finished with six each to add to the count. For Schroeder, Chase Kuhl and Saltrelli led with five each. Nick Powell (4), Parrish McKnight (3) and Cody Henry (3) added to the count for the Warriors. At the face-off draw, the teams split 50-50. McKnight took all the draws for Schroeder (9/18). Badger took most of the face-offs for R-H and finished 8/16.

  --  Matt Scharr scored with 3:20 remaining in overtime with an assist from Connor Moore to give Canandaigua the 11-10 win over Geneva. Scharr scored during a man-up opportunity and finished the game with a team leading 3g-2a.

Geneva scored five goals in the fourth quarter to force the overtime. The game tying goal was scored by Matt Miller with 0:45 remaining in regulation. Miller finished the game with 2g-3a for the Panthers. Overall the Braves had eight different players make the scorebook. In the cage, Corey Griffin played the entire game and finished with eight saves. For Geneva, Derek Grillone played exceedingly well and finished with 14 saves (56%).  

Pittsford 11 - Aquinas 2

  --  Pittsford controlled the game against Aquinas as they defeated the Little Irish 11-2. The Panthers scored the first two goals of the game and never trailed. Attackman Jack Lauroesch finished with an impressive 5 assists for the Panthers.

Pittsford scored two unanswered goals in the first quarter with goals from James Burke (3g-1a) and Corey Parke (1g). Parke scored his goal with 0:09 remaining in the opening quarter. In the second quarter, Aquinas scored the first goal. Klay Heston, who scored both goals for the Little Irish, scored with 2:43 remaining in the second quarter. The game was still close at that point with the Panthers only leading 2-1. With 0:09 remaining in the second quarter Burke added his second goal (assisted by Lauroesch). For the second time in two quarters the Panthers scored in the final ten seconds. The last second goal gave the Panthers the momentum going into the third quarter.

In the third quarter, the Panthers dominated scoring with six unanswered goals. Stephen Quinzi (2), Burke, Steven Ricci, Albie DiPasquale and Kober each scored in the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw Kober adding two more goals and Heston adding the final goal of the game.

At the face-off draw, Burke finished 7/13 for the Panthers. For Aquinas, Mike Messina finished 6/8 at the draw. Messina also led in ground balls for the Little Irish with five. For Pittsford, midfielder Tyler Aycock led with six ground balls. In the cage for Aquinas, Erich Wischmeyer played two and a half quarters and finished with four saves. Tom Mscichowski finished the game and recorded two saves.

In the cage for Pittsford, Conor Quinn finished with eight saves for the Panthers (89%). Cahal Moulton played four minutes for the Panthers and had two saves.

Leading the offensive book for Victor were sophomore attackman Roy Young (5g-2a), senior attackman Kyle Benwitz (4g-1a) and senior midfielder Connor Kimball (1g-5a). Junior middie Dale Mattice (1g) won 8 of 12 face offs and senior goalie Steve Basile made fourteen saves for the Blue Devils (4-3) who are off until next Thursday when they travel to Brockport.

  --  With Section Five schools on spring break this week, the Penn Yan Academy boys' lacrosse team packed its bags and headed down state to the United States Military Academy at West Point to play a game along the Hudson River with 2010 Section 1/Class A regional champions, the Lakeland-Panas Rebels.

Penn Yan used Sunday as a travel day, had a team dinner that evening and settled in at the Thayer Hotel for some rest. On Monday, following a team breakfast, the team ventured east across the Hudson to Cortlandt Manor, home of Walter Panas High School for a two hour practice session. Upon their return to the Academy, the team was welcomed to Blaik Field at Michie Stadium by Army head lacrosse coach Joe Alberici, a native of Auburn, NY. Coach Alberici spent the next 90 plus minutes with the Mustangs leading a tour through the Black Knights' training facilities culminating with some conversation of character and a walk through the Army Hall of Fame. Following a team dinner on the banks of the Hudson, the boys settled in their quarters for some down time.

Tuesday's sunrise brought cooler temperatures. After the boys packed up their gear, were treated to a home style breakfast, and then boarded the bus for the trek back across the Hudson and their match up with the undefeated Rebels. The game began with the Rebels controlling the opening face off and settling in their offensive end only to have the PY defense record their first take and push the ball up field. The Mustang offense had several looks at the cage in the first eight minutes with Rebel goalie Michael Zingaro saving a couple that were on goal.

Penn Yan continued its pressure and at the six minute mark of the first period Bradley Voigt set up fellow attackman Rion Davison on the crease and Penn Yan took a 1-0 lead. One minute later LP was flagged for a 30 second technical and PY's EMO unit capitalized when Dylan Yonts found Bradley Voigt sweeping from right to left in front of the goal. The Rebels gained possession on early face off wins, however, and they were able to tie the score at 2-2 with two minutes left in the opening quarter. The Mustangs struck again as Yonts buried his feed from Ryan Maciejewski and the period ended with the Mustangs on top 3-2.

Lakeland-Panas started the second quarter with ball as the Mustangs were flagged for a one minute illegal pocket penalty but were able to stave off the Rebel man up offense. Play continued between the boxes for several minutes with neither team threatening the other's goal. At the four minute mark, Penn Yan again went man down and this time the LP offense was able to take advantage and tie the score at 3-3. Anthony Luppino won the ensuing face off and the Mustangs, at the two minute mark, took the lead for good when Luppino passed to James Voigt out in front of the Rebel goal. Voigt was able to free his arms and get off a bounce shot that found the back of the net. The half ended with Penn Yan up by the score of 4-3.

The third quarter started with a Penn Yan win at the "X" and shortly thereafter Bradley Voigt netted his second goal of the game (22nd of year) with an assist from Yonts, extending their lead to 5-3. The Mustangs added another goal just two minutes later when Luppino dodged the right alley and fired a shot past Zingaro.

The key factor in the third was the swarming Penn Yan defense that time and again frustrated Rebel All-American Conor Prunty and fellow attackman Robert Caffrey and caused a number of LP turnovers on hard slides. To add to the Rebel frustrations, freshman goalie Brandon Maciejewski turned away a number of close, hard shots which resulted in Penn Yan holding LP scoreless in the third.

Penn Yan added another goal at the 11:11 mark of the fourth when Rion Davison and Bradley Voigt hooked up for the second time pushing the Mustang lead to 7-3. Lakeland-Panas ended their scoring drought at the nine minute mark when Caffrey was finally able to beat Maciejewski off hip and LP climbed back to within three. Moments later Davison and Voigt connected for a third time. An accurate pass from Voigt behind the net found Davison's crosse for a quick stick goal. The officials hit the Mustangs with a slash at 1:18 and Caffrey converted for his third goal of the game. The final score was Penn Yan 8 - Lakeland Panas 5.

Mustang goalie Brandon Maciejewski played the entire 48 minutes between the pipes and had a stellar day in the net finishing with 12 saves/5 goals against (71%). Anthony Luppino took all of the draws form the "X" and finished 7/14 (50%). Defenseman Michael Thiesmeyer joined Luppino in recording 4 ground balls for the blue and orange.

The Mustangs (6-1) travel back to Section Five where they will get ready to play Canandaigua on Friday. The game, originally scheduled as a night game at the Academy had been rescheduled for 11:00 AM at Evans Field.
