| April 14, 2011 - There were thirteen games today in Section Five and a large number of games were lop-sided. Winners by big margin included Fairport, Pittsford, Penfield, Penn Yan, Geneva and Pal-Mac. Bloomfield-Honeoye and Marcus Whitman won by seven goals. East Rochester won by two over Eastridge and Akron beat Batavia. In the most exciting game of the day, Sophomore middie, Matt Kaser scored the game0winning goal with less than ten seconds left in the game to give Spencerport an 8-7 victory of Rush-Henrietta.

-- Pittsford took the game to running time with 9:59 remaining in the third quarter and held Gates-Chili scoreless until the fourth quarter in their 17-3 win over the Spartans. Pittsford scored the first 16 goals of the contest and had 25 different players make the scorebook including 12 with at least one goal or assist.
Pittsford scored six goals in the first quarter. Each goal was scored by a different player; Stephen  Quinzi, Steven Troup, Tyler Aycock, Alex Kober, Corey Parke and Timmy Cooper .Aycock, Quinzi and Troup each had one assist as well. The Panther defense only allowed one shot in the first quarter and only 12 shots in the entire game. In the second quarter Pittsford added four more; two from Kober, and one each from Parke and Steven Ricci. The Panthers led 10-0 going into halftime. In the third quarter, Cooper, Troup, Parke and Nino DiPasquale each added one goal. The Panthers held a 14-0 lead after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, each team added three goals. Pittsford scored first with an unassisted goal from Tyler Wehner at 10:08. Gates-Chili came back with two of their own. The first was scored during man-up with Steve Eaton scoring. The second, with 5:53 remaining, was scored by Matt Dakin. The final Panther goal was scored by Stephen Romas (assisted by Cooper) during man-up play. With 0:35 remaining, Grant Ferguson added the final goal for the Spartans.
Leading the charge for the Panthers were Troup (2g-2a), Kober (3g), Cooper (2g-1a) and Quinzi (1g-2a). In the cage, Brian Lane played the first three quarters and Tyler Jacobson finished the game. Lane recorded 7 saves and Jacobson recorded one save. In the cage for the Panthers, Conor Quinn and Cahal Moulton split halves. Quinn finished with two saves (100%) and Moulton finished with two saves.

-- Spencerport fought back with six goals in the final quarter to defeat Rush-Henrietta 8-7. The Rangers played closely for the entire game and really stepped up their game in the final quarter. Overall, both teams had difficultly staying  out of the box and there were 19 penalties. Spencerport scored the final two goals of the game during extra-man opportunities. Spencerport goalie Tyler Schweikert had a phenomenal day in the cage and finished with 16 saves (69%). The entire Spencerport offense only had 13 shots on cage (25 shots total).
Spencerport came out strong and scored the only goal of the first quarter. Matt Kaser, who finished with 3g-1a for the Rangers, picked up the loose ball on the out-home side. Kaser drove straight to the goal, dodging three defensemen, and put the ball into the back of the net. The Rangers controlled the ball well during the opening quarter and had long stretches of time where they kept the ball away from RH. The first shot for the Royal Comets didn't come until 3:30 remaining in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, RH stepped up their play. The Royal Comets scored two goals in the second quarter and held the Rangers scoreless. Both goals were scored by Chauncey Scissum. The first goal was scored when Scissum drove straight down the center of the field. Scissum dodged his man, and the slide, before scoring. The latter goal was scored as Scissum and Colin Guy ran parallel cuts towards the crease. When Guy beat his man he passed across the field to Scissum for the goal. RH led 2-1 at the conclusion of the first half.
RH kept the pressure going in the third quarter. They added three more goals, two in extra-man; while holding the Rangers to only one goal. RH scored the first goal of the quarter during man-up play. With 11:31 remaining in the quarter, Nick Binnert added his first goal for the Royal Comets. Binnert finished with 2g-1a. Torry Whitcher (1g-1a) assisted Binnert's goal. Kenny Pattridge added his first goal for the Royal Comets with an assist from Scissum to make the game 4-1. Spencerport scored the next goal only 0:38 later. On a broken clear, Levi Baszynski  scored unassisted with 5:01 remaining in the quarter. The final goal of the third quarter came with 4:21 remaining. The goal began with Spencerport's Jordan McElligot stripping the ball from a Royal Comet attackman. McElligot came up with the ground ball but it was quickly stripped by Nick Binnert. Binnert picked up his own ground ball and looked across the cage to Pattridge for the unsettled goal. The Royal Comets led 5-2 at the end of three quarters.
The fourth quarter was all Spencerport. Spencerport scored the first goal of the quarter when Ben Tribunella picked up the loose ball at the midfield line. Tribunella passed the ball to Kaser, who dodged his defenseman for the goal. RH scored the next goal with an unassisted drive by Binnert. The Rangers added two more to bring the game within one goal. Both goals were assisted by Marcus Palvino. The first goal was scored during a fast-break. Palvino hit Jeff Nitti as he worked his way up field. The latter was scored by Tribunella on a broken clear. RH came back and scored the next goal to retake a two goal lead. The goal was scored by Whitcher with a drive from behind the cage. With 4:15 remaining the Royal Comets led by two. The Rangers never gave up and after the Royal Comet's goal the Spencerport sideline was still yelling "We have 4 minutes. It's not over yet."
Spencerport scored with 3:19 remaining on a garbage goal by Dom Gruttadauria. Gruttadauria scooped up the loose ball on the crease and finished into the back of the net. Spencerport won the ensuing face-off and looked to stall the ball. After a stall call was put into place, the Rangers got the ball back on a bad cross-crease pass. The Rangers cleared the ball up and drew a hold penalty from RH. They only took 0:15 of the penalty to score with Nitti scoring off a cross-crease feed from Kaser. RH won the face-off again and looked to hold the ball for a late shot. With 0:36  remaining Binnert took a point blank shot on Schweikert. He came up with a big save and gave the Rangers another shot. During the clear, the Rangers drew another penalty. This time a slash with 0:31 remaining. The Rangers went for the win instead of holding the ball for overtime. Their first shot went wide however, with 0:09 remaining, Palvino looked across the crease and found Kaser open for the go ahead goal. Although RH won the final face-off they could not get a shot off in the final seconds.
The game was close at face-offs with RH winning one more (10/19). Tyler Badger (8/16) and Colin Guy (2/2) combined for the Royal Comets. For Spencerport, Seth Miller finished 9/19. In the cage for RH, Mark Wagner finished with 5 saves. RH won the ground ball battle 40-36. Leading for the Royal Comets was Badger with 8. Mark Wagner and Binnert both added six to the tally. For Spencerport, Schweikert and Miller each had seven ground balls with McElligot and Baszynski adding five each.

At the face-off draw Connor Russell finished at 100% (10/10) and seven ground balls. Matt Condon also had seven ground balls for the Patriots. No report from Greece Arc/Oly.

-- Webster Thomas had a strong showing in the second and third quarter to defeat Hilton 15-10. The Titans outscored the Cadets in the first three quarters. Thomas had seven different players make the scorebook including five under-classmen.
Senior midfielder JT Hauck led the scoring with 5g-2a. Sophomore Jake Giudice (2g-2a) and junior John Zawacki (3g) also added to the scoring.
In the cage, Don Grace and Zack Mayer split time. Grace played the first 44 minutes and finished with 14 saves (64%) and Mayer finished the game with 2 saves (50%).
For Hilton, Cory Endres (3g), Derek Richards (2g-1a) and Kyle Youngman (2g-1a) led in scoring. In the cage, Mitch Smith and Mark Detroia split time. Smith played 38 minutes and recorded 10 saves while Detroia played 10 minutes with three saves.
-- Irondequoit scored the final six goals of the game to defeat Churchville-Chili 12-7. With 3:13 remaining in the third quarter the Saints held a 7-6 lead before Irondequoit stepped up to take down Churchville-Chili. In the cage for Irondequoit, Eric Fischer finished with ten saves including three in the final quarter. Fischer also had an interception at the crease early in the fourth quarter to help control the pace for the Eagles.
Churchville-Chili scored the first two goals of the contest with Ryan Yunker assisting Pat Bonafede on both goals. The Saints were leading with 4:27 remaining in the first quarter. Irondequoit's Max Kostyk scored with 2:36 remaining and again with 0:58 remaining to tie the game at 2-2. The Eagles had the last shot of the quarter and scored with 0:28 remaining to take the one goal lead. Matt Wolfe scored (assisted by Emmy Poccia).
In the second quarter, Irondequoit started man-down with their first of two illegal cross penalties. However, the Saints could not capitalize and Irondequoit scored the first goal; Nick Doktor (unassisted). Yunker scored his first goal to keep the game close with 7:01 remaining in the half. Irondequoit added the next two goals, both unassisted, by Briele Caples and Doktor. With 0:01 remaining in the half, Jeff Gurbacki scored (assisted by Trevor Hodgins). Irondequoit led 6-4 after two quarters.
In the third quarter, Churchville-Chili kept on scoring and added three more unanswered goals to take the 7-6 lead. Churchville-Chili's Trevor Hodgins added two goals (the first assisted by Bonafede the second unassisted) and Yunker added the final goal. The Eagles came back before the end of the quarter with three of their own. Kostyk scored two and Doktor scored one before time expired. The last two goals were scored with less than a minute on the clock and Kostyk's second goal was scored with 0:01 remaining. Irondequoit led 9-7 after three quarters.
The Eagles began the fourth quarter the same way as the second; man-down due to an illegal cross. Once again the Saints could not capitalize. Irondequoit held the Saints scoreless in the fourth quarter with a combination of strong goalie play and strong defensive play which limited their shots. The final three Irondequoit goals were scored by Poccia, Doktor and Caples.
In the cage for Churchville-Chili, Jack Corcoran finished with 8 saves. Eric Fischer recorded 10 saves for the Eagles. At the face-off, Matt Wolfe and Mitch Morrill both finished at 67%. Wolfe was 8/12 and Morrill was 6/9. Doktor led in ground balls with six for the Eagles. Loren Caples (5), Wolfe (4) and Briele Caples (4) added to the ground ball count. For the Saints, Bobby Wheeler led with five ground balls and Nick Bruno (4), Hodgins (3) and Patrick McMahon (3) added to the count.

-- East Rochester scored the final two goals of the game to defeat Eastridge 10-8. The game was back and forth with the game tied six times. East Rochester had standout performances from Jordan Michele and Jake Altman. Michele led the scoring with 4g-2a. Altman finished 10/17 (59%) at the face-off draw with nine ground balls.
Eastridge scored the first goal with Markus Lembcke assisting Nick Manaci with 5:22 remaining in the first quarter. One minute later, Anthony Coffaro scored unassisted during man-up to give Eastridge the 2-0 lead. Clayton Vaughn scored the first goal for East Rochester unassisted with 2:18 remaining in the first quarter. Eastridge led 2-1 after one.
ER came back in the second quarter. The Bombers scored the first three goals of the quarter. Michele added the first two goals and John Reiss added the third (all unassisted). With 1:14 remaining, Mike Mortillaro added an unassisted goal for Eastridge. The first half ended with East Rochester leading 4-3.
In the third quarter, both teams added three goals. Eastridge scored the first goal to tie the score again at 4-4. Brandon Burley scored (assisted by Anthony Coffaro) with 10:52 remaining in the quarter. 0:12 later Lembcke scored on a face-off fast-break to give the Lancers the lead once again. Michel added his third goal of the game to tie the score again with 9:55 remaining. Five minutes later an unassisted goal by Chris Giruzzi gave Eastridge the lead once again. Vaughn scored the next two goals for the Bombers to shake things up again. Both goals were assisted by Michele. The third quarter ended with East Rochester leading 7-6.
In the fourth quarter, Eastridge's Ethan Printy scored unassisted to tie the game once again at 7-7. Michele scored (assisted by Torin Hudson) to give the Bombers a one goal lead. The final Eastridge goal was scored by Lembcke to tie the game for the final time at 8-8 with 4:23 remaining in the game. The final two Bomber goals (at 3:58 and 1:57) were scored by Raymond Shalvoy and Reiss.
In the cage for East Rochester, Liridon Dervisholli and Jonathan Caton split halves. Dervisholli finished with one save and Caton finished with four saves. For Eastridge, TJ Ennis played the entire game and recorded 15 saves (60%).

-- Geneva defeated Midlakes 19-1. The Panthers started the second half in running time and added six more goals before the game ended. Midlakes' lone goal was scored in the second quarter when Sean Peck assisted Christopher Landschoot. Leading the scoring for Geneva were Will Brennan with 6g, Sean Cunningham with 3g-2a and Joe D'Amico with 4g.
In the cage, Matt Brennessel finished with twelve saves for the Screaming Eagles. For the Panthers Derek Grillone and Tom Lynch both saw time. Grillone finished with five saves and Lynch finished with one save.
-- Marcus Whitman secured their first win of the season tonight against Newark. The Wildcats won 10-3. They had a standout performance from Taylor Lazzaro at the face-off draw. Lazzaro finished 13/16 and was a major component in the Wildcat win. Offensively, 7/10 of their goals were assisted. Coach Bruce Teague writes, "We started out a little bit flat and missed some easy scoring opportunities, but got going in the second quarter. It was a great statement for our defense to shut them out in the fourth quarter."
Leading the charge for Whitman were sophomore Karl Gray (1g-3a) and freshman Matt Hall (3g). In the cage, freshman Merritt Bailey finished with 9 saves. No report from Newark.
