There were lots of unexpected results today, as teams started to make statements. Thomas was a decisive winner over Canandaigua, Victor beat R-H, The Lightning beat the Thunder by one goal in a "Storm Game". Churchville-Chili jumped to 4-0 with a win over Aquinas, Brighton was a 10-7 winner over Penfield and Mynderse beat B-H 16-9. The other winners today were McQuaid Jesuit, Waterloo over MW in OT, Fairport, Hamburg over Schroeder, Hilton and Carthage over Penn Yan in a "Lax for a Cause" game.
--  On one of the first warm and sunny days, the Canandaigua Braves hosted the Titans from Webster Thomas at the old Evans Field. Although the first quarter was close, ending at 2-1, Thomas slowly took control of the game up 5-2 at the half. In the third quarter Thomas added four more and ended the game, winning 10-5.
It took Thomas two and half minutes of transition at the start of the game before senior midfielder JT Hauck scored the opening goal on a drive from the top center in man up. Hauck, who will attend Binghamton in the fall, ended the game with 1g-2a. Just a minute later, the Titans scored again on a full-field clearing pattern that ended with junior attackman John Zawacki firing an underhand shot into the right side of the goal. Zawacki led the team in scoring with 3g-2a, many with his fellow midfielders. Canandaigua's first goal came from junior middie Matt Scharr who picked up the loose ball on a broken clear and won a one-on-one with Titan senior goalie Don Grace. The quarter ended with Thomas up 2-1.
The Titans took the score to 3-1 at 10:35 in the second quarter, on an outside-to-inside dodge by sophomore attackman, John Hill. After five minutes of transition, and no scoring, Canandaigua added a goal by junior attackman Dave Serron who received the ball on a crease pass. At 3-2, it looked like the Braves were going to get back into the game, but back-to-back goals by junior midfielder Troy Crevier, each assisted by Zawacki allowed Thomas to close the half up 5-2. Crevier's first goal, in man up at 1:40, was on a cut from the goalie's right. The second, twenty seconds later, was on a back-to-front feed.
Thomas lengthened their lead at the top of the third quarter, scoring three goals in the first five minutes starting with one from sophomore middie Jake Giudice. Senior middie, Ben Morrill drove straight in to the crease after a Titan clear and scored (unassisted) at 8:17. Kyle Rothfuss added another for Thomas on a crossing pattern from the high crease at 7:09. As if to say, "I have had enough", CA senior midfielder Mark Greer ran the entire length of the field and threw a hard side arm shot past Grace to take the Braves to 8-3. Thomas, who seemed to be scoring at will, ended the quarter at 0:19 on a fast break clear ending with Justin Dibernardo feeding Zawacki.
At the start of the last quarter, the Braves replaced senior Cory Griffin with sophomore goalie Michael Cuciti. The Titans showed no mercy and scored at 11:29 with a feed by Crevier to Zawacki on an outside to inside pattern. Just after penalty time expired, but before the teams were setup, junior attackman Taylor Spike scored for the Braves on a crossing pass from Serron. As the teams liberally substituted players, there was a period of no  scoring as the ball moved up and down the field. The draught ended by the last goal of the game, scored at 2:17 by Greer sweeping from left to right and beating Grace in the upper corner.
It was an exciting win for Thomas, earned by hard running and their genuine desire to move the ball for the best shot. Don Grace made some important stops and ended with 19 saves. His success was also due to excellent play by the Titan defense who kept Canandaigua far away from the goal. He was also helped by the lack of quality shots by the Canandaigua offense who often gave up medium range shots that would have been more difficult for Grace. Shots that were taken, especially in the early part of the game, were often wide and resulted too often in turnovers. The bottom line is that Canandaigua is struggling, with losses now to Thomas and Rush-Henrietta and tough games next week against Fairport and Hamburg. Thomas, 2-1, is looking at Rush-Henrietta and Hilton next week.

-- Victor came back from an early deficit to defeated RH 12-7. The Royal Comets had a 4-1 lead going into the third quarter.
The Blue Devils scored eight goals in the third quarter and held RH scoreless. Victor won the ground ball battle 33-19 and outshot the Royal Comets 33-22. In extra-man, Victor was 2/9 and RH was 2/6. In the cage, Steve Basile finished with eight saves for Victor and Mark Wagner finished with 14 saves for RH.

-- Greece Arcadia/Olympia defeated Greece Athena/Odyssey for the first time since May 16th, 2007. Four years ago, the Lightning came back from an 9-2 deficit to win 11-10 in double overtime. This year, the Lightning scored the opening goal and led the entire 48 minutes in their 9-8 win over the in-town rival.
Greece Arc/Oly came out strong and led 6-1 at the half. The Lightning also scored the first goal of the third quarter to go up 7-1. The Thunder came back scoring 7 of the next 9. Greece Ath/Ody had several opportunities late in the game to send the contest to overtime but could not capitalize. In the cage for Greece Ath/Ody, Zack Rudgers finished with 19 saves. No scoring or goalie data from Greece Arc/Oly.

Eastridge had scoring from Anthony Coffaro, Ethan Printy and Danny Ott (assists from Miles Young and Brandon Burley).
Fairport took the game to running time with over 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Leading the scoring charge for the Red Raiders were Derek DeJoe (8g-1a) and Stephen Danylyshyn (2g-3a).
In the cage for Fairport, Kyle Bowerman and Pete Gropp split time. Both goalies finished with one save.
For Eastridge, TJ Ennis finished with 13 saves and three quarters of game time. Odin Abril played the final quarter and recorded one save.

-- McQuaid Jesuit's defense stepped up and held Livonia to only 9 shots on cage in their 7-2 win over the Bulldogs. The Knights scored the first five goals of the game and held Livonia scoreless for nearly thirty-one minutes. McQuaid Jesuit had seven different players make the scorebook.
McQuaid's Clark Hadley scored the first goal with an assist from Duncan Ayer. Hadley's goal was the only goal in the first quarter. Jake Bailey, Hadley and Ayer each added one goal in the second quarter to take the score to 4-0 going into halftime. In the third quarter Ryan Williams scored his lone goal of the game before Derek Bishopp (assisted by Wyatt Struble) scored the first Bulldogs goal during man-up. Cody Cisco (also assisted by Struble) scored the second goal for Livonia. Alex Paroda nd Billy Nally scored the last two goals for the Knights.
In the cage, Pat Sheridan finished with 7 saves for the Knights. For Livonia, Ethan Jamison finished with 15 saves. Hadley finished 8/13 at the face-off draw for McQuaid and with a team leading five ground balls. Bailey also finished with five ground balls. Defenseman Luc Bailey and Ryan Sheridan finished with four each. For Livonia, Derek Bishopp (5) and Jamison (4) led.

-- After losing their last game in overtime, Waterloo came back to win today's game in overtime. The Indians defeated Marcus Whitman 9-8 with a goal from Cody Riegel with 3:21 to go in overtime. Riegel's goal was scored during man-up.
Waterloo scored the first goal of the game; however, Whitman came back to score three straight goals to end the first quarter 3-1. Waterloo added the first two goals of the second quarter to tie the score at 3-3. The Wildcats scored two more goals to take the 5-3 lead. With 2:36 remaining in the second quarter, Waterloo scored again to make the score 5-4 going into halftime.
In the third quarter, Waterloo kept the game close. They scored to tie the game at 5-5, then after a Wildcat goal again at 6-6. Waterloo kept their momentum to retake the lead 7-6.
The opening face-off of the fourth quarter went to Marcus Whitman and they tied the score on the opening shot. Waterloo pulled ahead once again at 8:39 during a man-up situation. Sophomore Tyler Dancause scored his first Varsity goal during man-up at 3:49 to send the game into overtime. Marcus Whitman had one more shot at the cage, but could not convert and the game went into overtime. During the opening face-off of overtime, Marcus Whitman was assessed a slashing penalty and that is when Riegel capitalized for the win.
In the cage for Waterloo, Josh Bailey finished with 12 saves. For the Wildcats, freshman Merritt Bailey also finished with twelve saves.

 -- Churchville-Chili defeated Aquinas 12-6 with standout performances from Ryan Yunker, Jeff Gurbacki, Taylor Kolmer and Nick Gray. The Saints maintain their perfect season moving to 4-0 with this win.
Aquinas scored the first and only goal of the opening quarter with only 0:07 in the game. Billy Lombardi won the opening draw with his own ground ball. He sent an outlet pass to Klay Heston who looked across the goal face to find Joe Snook for the goal. The Saints held possession for a large portion of the quarter, and the game in general, but could not put points on the board. Aquinas goalie Erich Wischmeyer finished the opening quarter with four saves (10 on the game). Aquinas led 1-0 after the first quarter.
Aquinas scored the first goal of the second quarter as well with a man-up goal by Heston (assisted by Nick Weston who played the game in attack for the Little Irish. Churchville-Chili came back and scored four straight goals to take the 4-2 lead in a three minute period of time. Gray scored the first two goals to tie the game and Kolmer and Yunker added the next two goals. Aquinas added one more goal with 0:42 left in the first half. Weston scored during man-up off an assist from Heston. The first half ended with Churchville-Chili leading 4-3. 
In the third quarter Aquinas tied the score with the first goal from Heston (unassisted). Churchville-Chili scored the next two goals with Trevor Hodgins and Gurbacki scoring. Churchville-Chili led 6-4 after three quarters.
It wasn't until the fourth quarter that the Saints stepped up their game. The Saints added six goals in the final quarter and held Aquinas to only two. Aquinas scored the first goal of the quarter to bring the game within one goal. Heston scored (assisted by Weston) again during man-up offense. Churchville-Chili scored the next three with goals from Yunker, Gray and Bonafede. The final Little Irish goal of the game was scored by Weston (unassisted). The final three goals of the game were all assisted by Yunker (scoring from Gurbacki, Bonafede and Kolmer). With his final assist, Yunker tied the all-time record at Churchville-Chili for assists with 71. The previous record was set by Ryan Grogran (2007).
Defensively, the Saints looked to their midfielders. Nolan Jessop, Steven Rinck, Nick Bruno and Kolmer stepped up to hold the Aquinas' midfield to only two shots (both off cage) for the entire game.

-- Brighton increased its record to 4-1 with a win over Penfield this evening. The Barons won 10-7. Although the game was close at a number of points in the game, the Barons controlled the pace of the game and with that they secured the win. Brighton controlled possession of the ball, both by being patient on offense as well as winning at the face-off draw. Senior midfielder Max Brauer was phenomenal at the face-off draw finishing 14/19 (only 2 technical wins and 6 self pick-ups). Brauer was more than a match for Penfield's Connor Russell, who in previous games seemed to be unstoppable.
 Brighton scored the first goal of the game with Kurt Minges scoring on a drive from behind the cage. Minges was impressive throughout the game, both scoring and feeding. He was confident behind the cage as well as on the crease. Four minutes later, CJ Wool scored the first of his three goals after a feed from Minges. Penfield's first goal was scored by senior Alex Miles with a drive from the top and a sidearm shot along the off-stick pipe. Miles finished the game with 3g for Penfield. Brackett Bourne's first goal came from a feed from the top by Steven Cregan. Cregan finished the game as the leading scorer for Brighton with 3g-2a. He also led in the ground ball count with 10. With 0:57 remaining in the first, Matt Bilak fired a shot from the right flank and after hitting two pipes, it bounced into the cage. Bilak finished the game leading the Patriots with 3g-3a. Brighton won the last face-off of the quarter and took the ball down to their offensive end. They were patient and with only 0:01 remaining on the game clock, Cregan fed the ball to Wool from behind the cage for the goal. Brighton led 4-2 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Penfield took the reins and outscored the Barons 3-2. Penfield scored the first two goals of the quarter to tie the score at 4-4. Bilak and Miles each scored once. Miles goal (assisted by Bilak) was scored during man-up. Brighton scored their fifth goal after quick thinking by Wool. Brauer looked to the crease for an inside feed, however, the Patriots knocked down the stick of his intended target. Wool, who was standing on the opposite side, stepped into action and caught the overthrown pass and put the ball into the back of the net. Two minutes later Penfield tied the score again at 5-5. With 0:19 remaining, Bilak assisted a cutting Dan Maring from behind the crease. Brauer kept up his impressive draw skills and Brighton won the face-off. Brauer quickly outlet the pass to Cregan who dodged inside for the unassisted goal only 0:10 later. Brighton led 6-5 going into halftime.
The third quarter was the difference-maker for Brighton. The Barons scored three goals while holding the Patriots scoreless. 0:25 into the quarter, Bourne added his second goal with a feed from Minges. Six minutes in and Cregan scored unassisted with a drive from the top of the restraining line. Finally with 4:00 remaining Minges scored on a fast-break goal (assisted by Will Banahene). Brighton led 9-5 after three quarters.
Penfield tried to come back again in the fourth quarter and scored the first two goals of the quarter at 10:25 and 7:07. Although they got within two, the Barons never lost control of the situation. Bilak and Miles scored with Miles' goal assisted by Bilak. With 3:53 remaining, the Brighton goalie received a penalty and was replaced in the cage by junior Tom Hilling. Although Hilling only faced one shot during the man-up it was a great save that kept Penfield from getting within one goal and gaining additional momentum. Brighton controlled the ball for much of the last two minutes. Although Penfield had a number of chances to clear the ball, t could not maintain possession.
In the cage, Brighton's Jordan Carey finished with four saves for the Barons. Keith Keehn played the entire game for Penfield and finished with 11 saves. (52%). For Penfield, midfielder Andrew Huntington led with six ground balls. Matt Condon (3) and Connor Russell (3) also contributed. For Brighton, joining Cregan were Brauer (6), David Hill (3), Casey Kopp (3), Wool (3) and Pierce (3).

-- Penn Yan and Carthage (Section III) faced off today at Carthage High School in the middle game of a three game "Lax for a Cause" event that benefited the Wounded Warrior Project. Each team had on its sidelines a wounded soldier stationed at nearby Fort Drum that served as honorary captain. Carthage came out the victor by defeating Penn Yan 15-9.
Penn Yan came out strong, tallying the first goal of the game. Dylan Yonts found Bradley Voigt open on the left side of the cage during a man-up situation. Voigt beat Comet goalie Gordo Wiltse stick-side high. Carthage answered one minute later on an unassisted goal by Rob Strife as he dodged the left alley. The Mustangs went on a four goal run led by Rion Davison's two goals at the 3:58 mark of the first period, the orange and blue led the Comets by the score of 5 -1. Carthage ended the run by scoring the last two goals of the first quarter and the score ended with PY leading 5-3.
The Comets continued their run into the second quarter tallying their fourth goal at the 11:23 mark when Nick Piroli found Jon Woodworth. Penn Yan answered with their second man-up goal at 9:28 when Bradley Voigt scored his second goal of the game on a nice look from long pole Baird Wilber. Penn Yan stretched the lead to 7-4 when Jeremy Bunn netted his pass from Ryan Maciejewski. Carthage came back in the final two minutes of the half, scoring three goals and tying the score at 7-7 going into halftime.
Penn Yan came out strong to start the second half and they stretched the lead to 9-7 halfway through the third on goals by Adam Stork and Yonts, both unassisted. However, the Mustangs had difficulty keeping possession the ball during the final half of the period. Carthage once again tied the contest, this time at 9-9 with a man-up goal at the 1:11. The score was tied going into the final quarter.
The Comet's first goal of the fourth period was scored by Kyle Temple on an assist from Thomas Grimm. It proved to be the game winner. Carthage possessed the ball for the majority of the fourth, adding five more goals and holding the Mustangs scoreless.
Carthage controlled the face off draw going 17/26. Anthony Luppino took the majority of face-offs for the Mustangs. Luppino and James Voigt also led Penn Yan in ground balls with four each. Between the pipes, freshman Brandon Maciejewski kept the Mustangs in the game with several key saves which were acknowledged by the crowd. He ended up with 14 saves in 45 minutes, 12 through the first three periods. Penn Yan was 2/6 on EMOs while Carthage was 2/4.
-- Hamburg, of Section VI, defeated Webster Schroeder 17-0. For Schroeder, both Eric Saltrelli and Nick Russo played between the pipes. Saltrelli finished with 8 saves (53%) and Russo finished with five saves.

-- Hilton cemented their win over Gates-Chili with seven goals in the final quarter to win 14-7. The Cadets kept the game close before starting their impressive final quarter. The game was tied at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5 and 7-7 before Hilton scored the final seven goals of the contest in only eight minutes.
Gates-Chili scored the first two goals of the game with goals from Matt Martin and London Booker. Hilton's Jake Montgomery, who finished with 4g-1a, scored the opening goal for the Cadets. Ralph Taliento scored the last goal of the first quarter to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead after the end of the first quarter. Hilton scored the first two goals of the second quarter, both by Montgomery, to tie the score at 3-3. Gates-Chili scored to take the lead once more with a goal from Joe Corona (assisted by Martin). Hilton tied the game again when Evan Pace assisted Harald Juergens for the goal. Hilton took their first lead of the contest late in the first half with an unassisted goal from Cory Endres. Hilton led after two quarters 5-4.
In the third quarter, Gates-Chili tied the score with another goal from Martin (assisted by Grant Ferguson) during an extra-man situation. Hilton's Kyle Youngman and Evan Pace scored to take the Cadets up by their largest lead at the time (two goals). The Spartans scored the final goal of the third quarter and first goal of the fourth quarter to tie the score for the final time. The final seven goals were scored by six different Cadets; Alex Milliken, Cory Endres, Montgomery, Youngman, Richards (2) and Shane Endres.
In the cage for Gates-Chili, Brian Lane played the entire game and finished with 13 saves. For Hilton, Mitch Smith finished with five saves.
