--  Special report After their close win over Pal-Mac earlier in the week, Penn Yan came into their game this evening against McQuaid Jesuit looking to redeem themselves. The Mustangs soared to a 12-2 win and demonstrated loud and clear that they are just as strong as past seasons. Penn Yan held McQuaid to only two goals, both of which were scored during man-up offense.

In the goal, freshman Brandon Maciejewski played the majority of the game and finished with five saves (71%). He was relieved with 9 minutes remaining by Matt Spoor. Spoor added another three saves to the Mustangs tally and did not have a goal scored against him.

RefAlthough Maciejewski had a good game, the problem with McQuaid scoring came from their inability to hit the cage. In the first quarter, McQuaid took nine shots and only a shot by long-stick Jake Bailey hit the cage. Over all, McQuaid took 26 shots with only 10 on cage.

Penn Yan scored the first four goals, three by freshman Bradley Voigt and one by senior Anthony Luppino, spanning the entire first quarter. Voigt on the offense and Luppino on the defense had the two stand-out performances of the game. Offensively, Voigt finished with 6g-2a. He scored the first three goals of the game and contributed on five of the first six. His ability to find space and force the ball into the back of the net will be an asset for Penn Yan for years to come.

Luppino was demonstrative on the ride and at short-stick defense. He finished with five takes, including three during rides and a highly impressive one on one take against a clearing midfielder. Luppino also finished with a team leading six ground balls (defenseman James Burdette also had six). He was a key player in this game and will be a major factor all season for the Mustangs.

In the second quarter, the Knights started what appeared to be a come-back. The quarter began with a three minute non-releasable stick penalty against Penn Yan. The Knights only capitalized on the penalty once with Brian Nally scoring (assisted by Clark Hadley). As the quarter continued, Penn Yan kept finding themselves in the penalty box. They spent 4.5 minutes in the penalty box in the second quarter alone. Hadley scored again, this time unassisted with 4:25 remaining to bring the score to 4-2. The Knights appeared to be back in the game. However, the Mustangs had other plans. They added three more goals in the final two minutes of the half, including two in the final minute. Voigt scored two and assisted the third while Rion Davison scored the remaining goal. Davison scored after Voigt drove from behind the cage and the McQuaid slide left him open on the crease. The half ended with Penn Yan leading 7-2. Penn Yan added three more goals in the third and two more in the fourth.

For McQuaid Jesuit, Jake Bailey finished with a team leading six ground balls. Bailey was impressive both at close defense as well as on the face-off wing. Alex Paroda and Hadley both finished with five ground balls. The one area that the Knights excelled at was the face-off draw. Penn Yan could not stop the Knights from getting possession. Hadley took 15 face-offs and won 13 (4 by technical). Between the pipes, Pat Sheridan played nearly the entire game and finished with eight saves. Brendan Caufield played for one minute after Sheridan was called on a non-releasable "to the head" penalty.

Next up: The Knights host Livonia and Penn Yan travels to Carthage (Section III), both on Saturday.  return to top

--  Special report  It was a cold day at Palmyra-Macedon High school as the Red Raiders hosted the Wildcats of Marcus Whitman in Finger Lakes play. Although the Wildcats led at the end of the first quarter and they were close at the half, Pal-Mac came back in the second half with four unanswered goals on their way to a 11-5 win.

pal-mac vs whitmanPal-Mac scored the first goal of the game at 8:27 when freshman attackman Ben Reeves scored the first of his 3g-2a on a drive from the left and a pass from senior middie Mike Russell. Marcus Whitman returned to tie the game less than a minute later with an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Clay Wilson who had a drive from out front before bouncing the ball past P-M goalie, Matt Carkner. One minute later Russell drove from the goalie's left for his unassisted goal , giving the Red Raiders the lead for a couple of minutes before Wildcat junior middie, Matt Hey tied the game on a feed from Taylor Lazzaro. With 1:43 left in the quarter, freshman attackman Matt Hall scored the go-ahead goal for Whitman on a clearing pattern and a pass from sophomore Tyler Dancause. The Wildcats led at the end of the first quarter 3-2.

After the break Pal-Mac came back to control the game, scoring the next four goals, the first two right from the face offs and in the first thirty seconds in the quarter. Senior attackman Mike DeMar received the ball from Mike Martin and scored the first goal at 11:49. Senior Middie Jeff Kier took the ball right from the face off and scored just thirteen seconds later. After five minutes of transition, junior middie David Ellsworth, on a clearing run, dodged his defender out front and took the ball to the cage at 6:29. Kier scored the fourth goal on a drive from behind the cage to give the Red Raiders a 6-3 advantage. Matt Hall scored a lone goal for Marcus Whitman on his drive from behind the goal with 1:45 left in the half, which ended with Pal-Mac ahead 6-4.pal-mac vs whitman

The Marcus Whitman defense was aggressive and focused in the first half of the game and seemed to pursue ground balls with a passion. They did not always get the ball, but they were tenacious when the ball was on the ground, and it was there quite often. The combination of very cold hands and the early season, made the game look more like field hockey during parts of the game. To the credit of both teams, however, there were always multiple players going after the loose balls.

The Red Raiders composed themselves during the abbreviated halftime break and took control of the second half, scoring five goals while allowing only one goal for the Wildcats, that occurring in the last two minutes of the game, when Hall scored an unassisted goal on a drive from the midfield.

Ben Reeves scored the single third quarter goal, at 2:08 on a wing feed from Mike DeMar as he cut to the goal. David Ellsworth scored on an outside-to-inside pass from Reeves. That goal was followed by a clear out for Reeves as he cut from behind the goal. Later, Mike Russell scored on a pass from Reeves and a tight cut from the goal line extended. Junior attackman Kyle Ludwig scored the last Red Raider goal (1:53) during a full field clear.

Pal-Mac senior goalie Matt Carkner ended the game with five saves and Marcus Whitman freshman goalie, Merritt Bailey, who made some nice pressured saves, ended the game with nine saves.

Next up: Pal-Mac hosts Geneva on Friday and Marcus Whitman travels to Livonia on Thursday.  return to top
