There were a number of exciting games played on the second Saturday of the season. Rush-Henrietta defeated Canandaigua 9-6, Irondequoit beat Ithaca 13-10, Penn Yan just made it by Pal-Mac 10-9 and the Lightning won their game against ER in overtime. The other winners were Pittsford, Penfield, Thomas, Gates, Newark, Fairport and Waterloo.

--  Irondequoit and Ithaca have had a very long tradition of playing games together, going back to before there were county leagues and a Sectional organization. In the last few years, Ithaca has had remarkable seasons, and has had consistently high rankings in the NYS polls.  With this backdrop it is not surprising that even in this early part of the season that several hundred fans in attendance were treated to an exciting game. It was punctuated by scoring runs by both teams and in the end, despite strong come-back scoring by the Little Red, Irondequoit won the 13-10 contest.
Under bright skies and a cool lake breeze, the morning game on the turf field at Irondequoit began with both teams checking each other out. The ball went up and down the field many times, while each team tested match ups, and each timidly tried drives from various locations on the field. Irondequoit scored first, with 3:05 left in the first quarter when junior attackman, Nick Doktor cut from behind the goal and shot for an unassisted goal. One minute later, Max Kostyk replicated the previous play. Less than a minute after that, junior attackman Connor Enright swept across the top of the box and scored a third unassisted goal with a side arm shot that bounced over Ithaca goalie, Max Yavitt's shoulder.
After a defensive turnover, Austin Romantic took the ball from near midfield and after a drive to his right scored the first Little Red goal of the game with 0:39 left in the quarter.
With more transition taking almost half of the second quarter, Ithaca scored at 5:53 to bring the score to within one. Jaedon Henderson on the wing received the ball from Joe Bucci at the top of the box. It did not take the Eagles long, however, to assert their dominance as they scored the first of three in a row to end the half up 6-2. At 4:14 senior middie-turned attackman, Greg Coholan scored the first of his five goals in the game, this time driving from the top left. During a substitution with the ball behind the cage, Nick Doktor saw his opening and ran a wide cut to the goalie's left and after rolling back he scored his second of four goals at 3:33. Coholan scored the last goal of the half with less than a minute to go on a feed from junior attackman, Connor Enright.
The Eagles showed a great deal of different offensive sets in the first half, often adjusting to a well coordinated defensive unit from Ithaca. Although they were obviously looking for mismatches, they often found that strong power moves were enough, particularly when parallel cuts were available.
It did seem at halftime that Irondequoit was clearly in control, but there was a great deal of unfounded tentativeness by the Eagles and that lack of confidence gave the Little Irish just enough wiggle room to stay in the game, and in fact, outscore the hosts in the second half.
Bucci scored early in the third quarter on an unassisted drive. Two minutes later Coholan took a pass from Enright in man up. The Eagles transitioned from a circle offense to a 3-3, drawing the Little Red defense high above the crease. Coholan came from behind the goal and scored on a one-on-one with the goalie. Once again, Ithaca responded, less than a minute later reserve midfielder Casey Williamson made a case to move up in the lineup after picking up a loose ball in his defensive end and running it coast-to-coast for an unassisted bounce shot goal at 7:29. The Eagles came back again, as Doktor started his drive from behind the cage. After crossing the goal line extended he scored with an underhand shot, taking the score to 8-4 Irondequoit with 6:01 left in the third.
To their credit, Ithaca refused to give up. They exhibited poise and confidence which was rewarded with the last two goals of the quarter. Riley Lasda found Henderson cutting to the crease on the first goal and Doug Riondi scored an unassisted goal at 1:54. Two penalties against Ithaca toward the end of the quarter, gave the Eagles the ball and they elected to hold on to it and avoid the fourth quarter face off.
With the score at 8-6 after three, the Eagles scored two quick goals at the top of the fourth, the first only seven seconds after the start of play. On a set play, Coholan took the ball from GLE and drove toward the top of the box, before firing one past Yavitt. After winning a technical face off, the Eagles scored on a Doktor from Wolfe play taking the score to 10-6.
The Little Red returned once again, with Henderson scoring two (of his four goals) in a row. The first was unassisted and the second was on a tight feed from Lasda so with just under nine minutes left, Ithaca  was within two goals at 10-8. That didn't last long as Enright scored thirty seconds later after substituting on the fly and receiving the ball out near midfield. He ran the ball straight to the goal and scored on a hard low shot to the goalie's left. Coholan scored his last goal of the game on a sweep from the top but Ithaca came back with an unassisted goal by Bucci who dodged from the top of the box. Driving from the top along his right side, Emmy Poccia made the scorebook to end the scoring for the Eagles at 4:32. Bucci ended the Ithaca scoring at 1:57 on a feed from Paolo Ciferri.
Junior goalie Eric Fischer made four critical saves for the Eagles in the last two minutes of the game. He finished with 14s/10ga (58%), and his confidence in the cage and his vocal leadership was instrumental in the win. He looked much more seasoned than one would expect at this point in the year.
As expected this was a good game to watch and allowed both teams to demonstrate why they are ranked so highly in the early season polls. The decision, by Coach Craig Whipple, to move some of last year's middies to attack and some attackmen to midfield has, indeed strengthened his offensive options and the players looked comfortable in their new assignments. Ithaca, as usual, was well coached by Frank Welch and his experienced coaching staff. The players clearly knew their game plan and individual jobs, which bodes well for their success in their Section Four schedule. There will be no chance for a rematch this year as Ithaca is a Class A school this year and Irondequoit is in Class B, so the fans will need to wait until next year to see what happens next.

-- Rush Henrietta came out early to defeat Canandaigua 9-6 at Evans Field. R-H took an early lead at the half (4-1) and held out through the late advance by the Braves in the fourth quarter. Matt Scharr led scoring for the Braves (1-1) with 2g-2a. For RH (also 1-1), Torry Whitcher led with 4g-1a.
Next up: Canandaigua hosts Eastridge (1-2) on Tuesday and R-H hosts Livonia (1-1), also on Tuesday.

-- In one of the closest games of the day, Pittsford held off the late advance to Victor to move to 3-0. The Panthers won 8-7. Pittsford had a stellar day from their goalie Conor Quinn, who finished with 12 saves (63%). Although Victor scored the first goal, Pittsford led or tied for the remainder of the game.
Victor's Mitch Rupp (1g-1a) scored the first goal (unassisted) only 0:34 into the contest. He also had a good day riding with a one-on-one take during a clearing situation by the Panthers. Six minutes later Pittsford tied the score on a goal from Jack Lauroesch (assisted by Andrew Rodenhouse). 0:37 later Pittsford took their first lead of the game with an unassisted goal from James Burke. Connor Kimball (4g) tied the score once again at 2-2 with another unassisted goal. Pittsford's Corey Parke scored the first of his three goals with an assist from Lauroesch to give the Panthers the lead for good. Although, the Blue Devils were able to get within one goal three more times, they never retied the score. The final goal of the first quarter occurred with 0:08 remaining when Steven Troup scored to give the Panthers a two goal lead. The first quarter ended with Pittsford leading 4-2.
Parke added his second goal in the first minutes of the second quarter (unassisted). Victor's Kimball and Maloney hooked up for the next Blue Devil goal. That followed another goal by Lauroesch (assisted by Burke). Pittsford held a three goal lead with 8:28 remaining in the second quarter. Victor scored the final goal of the second quarter to keep the score within two going into halftime.
Victor scored the first goal of the third quarter to take the game to within one goal. Rupp assisted Kimball with 6:28 remaining in the third quarter. For the rest  of the game the teams traded goals alternating between a two goal and one goal lead for the Panthers. With six minutes remaining in the game, the Panthers went into a slow down. They had trouble keeping the ball in the box and as a result Victor had a number of chances at the goal. With 0:15 remaining, Kimball scored unassisted to bring the game back within one goal. Dale Mattice won the face-off (on a technical) giving the Blue Devils one last shot. With 0:06 remaining they had a chance at goal line extended; however, they could not get a shot off.
Mattice finished 10/16 (63%) at the face-off; however, 7 of his wins were on technical fouls. In the cage, Steve Basile finished with 10 saves for the Blue Devils. Pittsford won the ground ball battle 33-26. Leading the charge for the Panthers were Kevin Sanna and Tyler Aycock with five each. Marc Weyl, Lauroesch and Alex Proper each finished with three each. For Victor, Nick Waseleski finished with a team leading four ground balls. Basile, Mattice, Kimball and Scot Masingill each finished with three.

-- HF-L played a close came in the first half but the Patriots proved to be too much and after seven unanswered goals in the third quarter, they pulled ahead for the 14-8 win.
Penfield scored the first three goals of the contest. Scoring began with an unassisted goal by Alex Miles who finished the game with 3g-1a. Andrew Huntington and Matt Bilak hooked up for an extra-man goal for the Patriots. Dan O'Brien (2g-1a) scored the third goal for Penfield. HFL's Jason Boike (2g) scored the first goal for the Cougars with 5:37 remaining in the quarter. Penfield added two more. Matt Springer scored unassisted then assisted O'Brien's second goal. The first quarter ended with Penfield leading 5-1.
In the second quarter, HF-L came out strong scoring the first three goals. Defenseman Keanan O'Brien scored the first goal of the quarter with 10:07 remaining. That was followed by James Spencer scored with an assist from Drew Tallon. Tallon came back and scored (unassisted) for the next goal. HF-L was only down one goal with 5:10 remaining in the opening half. Penfield's Andrew Huntington scored the single Penfield goal of the quarter during man-up (assisted by Miles). The first half ended with a score of 6-4.
HF-L kept up the pressure scoring the first two goals of the third quarter. Boike (assisted by Tallon) and Tallon (assisted by Spencer) scored for the Cougars. Overall, HF-L scored five of the last six goals spanning 14 minutes to tie the game at 6-6. Penfield took over at that point and scored seven unanswered goals. Scoring included Miles, Matt Bilak, Springer and Mike Larkin. By the end of the third quarter, Penfield led 13-6. In the fourth quarter, HFL added two and held the Patriots to only one goal. Bilak scored the only goal for Penfield. Ian Holtby and Cassidy Kuhn scored for the Cougars.
In the cage, Keith Keehn played the majority of the game for Penfield. Keehn finished with four saves. Nick Presicci finished out the last two minutes of the game and recorded one goal against. For HF-L, Stephen Leonard played two and a half quarters and recorded two saves. Nick Beniamino finished the game and recorded four saves (57%).
The Patriots finished with seven penalties although the Cougars could not convert on any of them. Penfield finished 2 for 3 at man-up. The Patriots also won the ground ball battle 46-33. Leading for Penfield was Condon with 7 ground balls. Nick Rogers (5), Bilak (5), and Huntington (4) also contributed for Penfield. HF-L's Keanan O'Brien and James Spencer both finished with eight ground balls and Jared Cordon finished with four. No report from HF-L.

-- Eastridge came fired up for their game against Webster Thomas but at the end of the day, the Titans won 15-6. Thomas had 24 players make the scorebook with at least one stat including 17 with at least one ground ball and 15 with at least one shot and 8 with at least one goal.
The Lancers scored the first two goals of the game with unassisted goals from Chris Giruzzi and Brandon Burley. With 10:01 remaining in the first quarter, Eastridge had built up at 2-0 lead. Thomas came back over the next 15 minutes and scored seven straight goals starting with the first only 0:16 later. Jake Giudice scored (unassisted). The first quarter ended with Thomas leading 5-2.
Giudice added his second goal of the game 0:29 into the second quarter with an assist from John Zawacki. Zawacki finished with 6g-4a for the Titans. Adam Jollow and Rob Guenther also added goals for Thomas in the second quarter. Mike Mortillaro and Markus Lembcke added goals for Eastridge. Thomas led 8-3 after two quarters.
Thomas opened the scoring in the third quarter adding seven goals and holding the Lancers scoreless. In the fourth quarter, Eastridge added two more goals within the first two minutes of play. Ethan Printy scored unassisted on both goals. The final goal of the game was scored during man-up for Eastridge. Overall, Eastridge was 3/3 in extra-man offense.
In the cage for Thomas, Don Grace finished with nine saves playing the first three quarters. Zach Mayer finished out the game and recorded five saves. For Eastridge, TJ Ennis played the entire game and finished with 25 saves (63%). Thomas led the ground ball battle 33-15. Leading the charge for the Titans was Justin Bird (4), Troy Crevier (3), Ben Morrill (3), Conor Smith (3) and Mark Vaccarrelli (3). For Eastridge, Ennis finished with a team leading three. Luke Martello (2), George Bauer (2) and Printy (2) also made contributions.

-- In the first overtime game of the season, Greece Arcadia/Olympia defeated East Rochester 9-8. Greece Lightning's Rob Kitchen led in scoring with 3g-1a.
East Rochester came out early, taking the 2-0 lead with 6:00 remaining in the first quarter. The Lightning responded by scoring three of their own. ER added the final goal of the quarter to keep the game tied (3-3) going into the second quarter. The game continued to go back and forth with each team adding two more goals in the second quarter. Freshman Bryan Collister finished with 2g-2a for Greece Lightning.
Greece Lighting held the lead with two minutes remaining in regulation but the Bombers scored the tying goal to send the game into overtime. Overtime began with East Rochester in the penalty box and Greece Arc/Oly with the ball. Kitchen took the ball and put it into the back of the net. Coaches Adam Geier and Kevin McMaster were pleased with the first win of the season for the Lightning. Coach McMaster writes, "We are a young team and have a lot to learn. We are starting to mesh together and take responsibility on and off the field." The Lightning will host Churchville-Chili on Tuesday. No report from East Rochester.

-- Gates-Chili defeated Bloomfield-Honeoye in a penalty ridden contest that ended with a score of 12-6. The contest saw 17 penalties issued between the two teams. One B-H senior defenseman was ejected after his sixth penalty which included two unsportsmanlike conduct calls. Overall, the Pride were in the penalty box for 10.5 minutes spanning 11 penalties. Gates-Chili scored five of their goals during man-up situations, including two during double man-up situations.
Gates-Chili scored the only goal of the first quarter when RJ Macks fed the ball to Matt Martin. Martin finished with 3g-2a and Macks with 3g-1a. The first quarter ended with the Spartans leading 1-0. The second quarter began with Bloomfield-Honeoye in possession of the ball after the first concluded with a penalty. Ten seconds into the quarter, Jared Maloney sent the ball to Luke Blain for the goal. Blain finished with 5g for the Pride. Gates Chili scored the next three goals with Martin and Macks both scoring. Grant Ferguson (6g-2a) assisted the Martin goal. Additionally, Ferguson scored his first goal during extra-man with an assist from Ralph Taliento. The Pride finished out the quarter with an unassisted goal from Blain. The Spartans led 4-2 after the first half.
In the second half, the Pride came out swinging. Bloomfield Honeoye scored the first three goals of the quarter to take the lead for the first time in the contest. Blain scored all three goals with Maloney, and Zach Hammond each assisting one goal. With 7:43 remaining in the third quarter, the Pride was leading. However, Gates-Chili regained a sizeable lead before the culmination of the quarter. Martin added his third goal (again assisted by Ferguson) with 6:55 remaining to tie the game at 5-5. Ferguson scored the next three goals (two in man-up) to finish the quarter leading 8-5.
B-H scored final goal of the game with 6:34 remaining in the fourth quarter to bring the game to within two goals but the Spartans scored the final four goals of the game. Ferguson and Macks each added two goals. The final four goals were assisted by Steve Eaton, Martin, and Dakin (2).
In the cage for the Pride, Aaron Stevens finished with 7 saves. For Gates-Chili, Brain Lane played the majority of the game and finished with 8 saves (57%). Tyler Jacobson played the final four minutes and recorded two saves. Ferguson finished leading his team in shots (14 with 9 on cage). Martin (3) and Macks (3) led the ground ball count for the Spartans. For B-H, Jerrett Hertzel, Jeff Kellerson, Kyle Fox, Jake Stevens and Zach Hammond each had two ground balls.

-- Penn Yan defeated Pal-Mac 10-9 this afternoon. The Mustangs held Pal-Mac scoreless for the final 18 minutes of the game and scored the lone goal of the fourth quarter to secure the win. Penn Yan's scoring was led by Bradley Voigt (1g-2a). For Pal-Mac, Mike DeMar led with 3g-1a.
Next Up: Penn Yan (1-0) travels to McQuaid (0-1) on Tuesday and Pal-Mac (0-1) hosts Marcus Whitman for their opener on Tuesday.
-- Waterloo defeated Gananda in their first game of the season 8-1. The Indians held at 4-1 lead at halftime and increased it by two goals in both the third and fourth quarters. Leading the scoring for Waterloo was Cody Riegel (6g-1a). For Gananda, their lone goal was scored by Collin Dotterer and assisted by Ian Palmer.
Next up: Waterloo (1-0) hosts Newark (1-0), Gananda (0-2) hosts Bishop Kearney (0-0).
-- Newark defeated Batavia 8-2 this afternoon with strong performances from John Denniston (3g-1a) and Jack Timerson (2g-2a). The Reds (1-0) also had a stand out performance from their goalie Dominic Camblin who finished with 13 saves (87%).
Newark scored the first three goals of the contest. Timerson recorded two assists and a goal in the first three goals. Denniston scored the opening goal (assisted by Timerson), followed by an unassisted goal for Timerson and Jeff Nowak scoring (assisted by Timerson). The first quarter ended with the score 3-0 for the Reds.
Batavia's Kyle King scored the first goal for the Blue Devils in the second quarter. Newark kept up the pressure scoring the next three goals. The score at halftime was 6-1 for Newark. The game remained scoreless in the third quarter before James Gomez added the final goal for Batavia. In the cage, Batavia's Dylan Buchholtz finished with 11 saves (58%).
Next up: On Tuesday, Batavia (0-2) travels to East Rochester (0-1) and Newark (1-0) travels to Waterloo.
