-- special report For the first time since the inception of Class C division ten years ago, Section Five will be sending a new team to the state tournament. Aquinas defeated Penn Yan 16-9 in the first game of the day, ending the Mustangs twelve straight Championship streak. The Little Irish led for the entire game after Klay Heston scored the opening goal (unassisted) with 7:41 remaining in the first quarter.

The Little Irish dominated the first half of play. Aquinas led 4-1 after the first quarter and 8-2 at halftime. After Heston's opening goal, Penn Yan's Adam Stork scored his first goal with a drive from the top of the restraining line to tie the game for the only time at 1-1. The Little Irish added the next three goals including two in the final minute of the quarter to move from leading 2-1 to leading 4-1. With 0:36 remaining Jake Vogl drove down the left side and found Heston open on the crease. On the ensuing face-off (only 0:07 later) the Little Irish scored again. Freshman face-off man Billy Lombardi picked-up his own ground ball and found Austin Gorman open for the goal on the crease. Lombardi finished the game at 68% for aq-pythe Little Irish (17/25). Gorman finished the game with 4g-3a and was named the Class C All Tournament team Most Valuable Player.

Penn Yan scored the first goal of the second quarter to keep the game close at 4-2. They scored during a two extra-man situation with an outside shot by Bradley Voigt (assisted by Adam Trombley). The Little Irish then came back over the next six minutes and scored four more goals before time expired on the opening half. The first was scored with a high cross- crease pass from Gorman to Dave Mason. The next two goals both began with a defensive take by long stick-midfielder Anthony Starnino. Starnino stripped the ball from Penn Yan and took it all the way down the field to find Vogl for the first goal and Gorman (who crossed the crease to Heston) for the second goal. The final goal of the half was scored with 0:01 remaining with an unassisted goal by Brendan Hall. The Little Irish were dominating after two quarters 8-2.

In the third quarter the Mustangs attempted to put together a comeback, but they never got closer than four goals although they were within three goals in the fourth quarter. The teams traded goals in the early part of the third quarter. Penn Yan scored first with Stork finding Trombley open for an outside shot. Aquinas came back on the ensuing face-off with Lombardi picking up his own ground ball and shooting for the goal. Penn Yan's Jordan Owen scored his only goal of the game with a feed from behind the cage from attackman Dylan Yonts. Once gain the Little Irish came back with one of their own with a feed from behind by Heston to Gorman. Aquinas added another goal to extend to their largest lead of the game (11-4). Penn Yan scored the next three goals and five of the next six to get within three goals half way through the fourth quarter. Trombley scored the first two goals followed by a goal from Voigt (assisted by Yonts) with only 0:05 remaining in the third quarter. The Little Irish maintained the 11-7 lead going into the final quarter.

aq-pyAquinas scored the first goal of the quarter with an unassisted goal from Messina. Penn Yan scored their last two goals of the contest with an intercepted clearing pass by Voigt which resulted in a goal and a dodge from behind the cage by Nate Nichols. The Mustangs' final goal was scored with 7:41 remaining in the fourth quarter. Aquinas added the last four goals of the game to cement their victory. Vogl and Hall both added their second goals and Gorman added his third and fourth.

Aquinas won the ground ball battle 29-28. Lombardi finished with a team leading eight ground balls for the Little Irish. Starnino added another seven ground balls for Aquinas. Anthony Luppino, who played both long stick defense as well as short stick offense led in ground balls for the Mustangs with eight. Voigt finished with six for Penn Yan. Luppino was a highlight for the Mustangs and was rarely off the field on either defense or offense; Luppino was named to the Class C All Tournament team. In the cage for Aquinas, Erich Wischmeyer finished with 17 saves (65%). Penn Yan switched goalies four teams (between three goalies). Cody Richardson started the game and finished the first half with Matt Spoor playing five minutes in the second quarter. Brandon Maciejewski played the entire second half. Richardson finished with three saves, Spoor finished with one save and Maciejewski finished with four saves.

Overall Aquinas played to win the Championship and had the talent to do it. Penn Yan played like champions in their own right but did not have enough to take out the Little Irish team. The key's to Aquinas' success were face-off man Lombardi getting them possessions, goalie Wischmeyer stopping the Penn Yan comeback with nine of his seventeen saves coming in the fourth quarter and their starting attack, which together had 7g-4a. Standout performances by Trombley and Luppino were impressive for Penn Yan, but not enough to secure the win.

Aquinas moves on into the New York State Tournament with the Western Regionals (quarter finals) at Canisius College (Section Six) on Tuesday, June 8th at 5:30 PM. The Class C game in Section Six between Eden and Silver Creek was interrupted by thunder storms with Silver Creek in the lead. Aquinas will play the eventual winner on Tuesday. return to top

--  special report Irondequoit was the only team in the entire tournament to defeat a higher seed, and the Eagles did it not once, but three times. The fifth seeded Eagles defeated fourth seeded McQuaid in the first round, followed by defending Class B Champion and first seeded Canandaigua in the semifinals and today defending Class A Champion and second seeded Webster Thomas to secure the Class B Title. The Eagles won 16-13, in the closest game of the day. After finishing as runner-up for the Sectional title the last two years, the Eagles finally secured their first title since 2007. The Eagles have been in the Championship game for the last four years. Additionally, the Class B title game was the only game in which the winning team did not lead for the entire contest.

iron-thomThomas scored the first two goals of the contest to take an early 2-0 lead only 2:00 into the game. Jack Hinderland scored the first of his 4g-3a with a drive from behind the cage. One minute later JT Hauck fired a hard outside shot to increase their lead to 2-0. Irondequoit came back with two goals to tie the score. The first was a feed from behind the cage from Greg Coholan to Mike Utz. Utz, who finished the game with 7g-1a, was named Class C All Tournament team Most Valuable Player. Ian Brooks scored just 0:14 later after taking the ball from the midfield line (after a technical face-off win) and heading straight to the cage. With 7:44 remaining in the opening quarter, the score was tied 2-2. Thomas added another two goals before the quarter expired. Kyle Rothfuss scored on a face-break with a feed from Kenny Tomeno and Hinderland drove from behind the cage and found Hauck open for the final goal of the quarter. Thomas led 4-2 after the first quarter.

Thomas continued their pressure with the first goal of the second quarter. The goal began with an offside call against the Eagles. The Titans quickly picked up the ball and pushed it up field for the fast-break goal by John Zawacki (assisted by John Hart). The irondequoit-thomasTitans were leading 5-2; however, the Eagles scored the next four goals to end the first half leading 6-5. The first came on a dead ball situation during a man-up attempt. Erik Kleehammer took the ball from goal line extended and drove to the goal and after beating his man found Nick Doktor open for the goal. The second, another extra-man goal, was scored by Kleehammer found Emmy Poccia open for the goal. Irondequoit tied the game for the second time with long stick Ryan Vella taking the ball up field during a fast-break and finding Doktor open for the goal. The final goal of the quarter was scored by Utz (assisted by Coholan). Irondequoit led 6-5 at halftime.

Irondequoit scored the first goal of the third quarter with another goal by Utz (assisted by Kleehammer). Thomas came back after two goals from Hinderland to tie the score for the third time. Hinderland's second goal was assisted by Hauck and scored during a two extra-man opportunity. With 8:05 remaining, the score was tied. Irondequoit's Utz scored another two goals only 0:37 apart to give the Eagles another two goals lead. iron-thomYet again the Titans were not willing to surrender and scored another two goals to tie the game for the fourth time at 9-9. Irondequoit began to pull away after scoring the last three goals of the third quarter; including a goal by Poccia (assisted by Utz) with 0:017 remaining in the quarter. The Eagles led 12-9 after three quarters.

The Titans kept the game close throughout the final quarter and unlike the other two goals, it was not apparent which team would win until the final horn had blown. Thomas scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to bring the game within one goal. Hauck and Brad Hutton each added one goal (with Hinderland assisted the latter goal). Irondequoit retaliated with another two goals from Utz and Poccia. Each team traded goals for the final four goals (with each adding two goals). The final goal of the game was scored at 2:04 remaining with an unassisted goal by Coholan.

In the cage for Irondequoit, Tyler Nash played the entire game and finished with eleven saves. For Thomas, Don Grace played the entire game and finished with seven saves. Thomas' Hauck led their ground ball tally with four (Hutton and Hinderland each added three more). For Irondequoit face-off man Justin Buonomo finished with a team leading nine ground balls. Defenseman John Mikel finished with seven while Brooks and Coholan both finished with four ground balls.

Buonomo was one of the key aspects of the Eagles' win. Buonomo finished 20/30 (66%) at the draw for Irondequoit and was named to the All Tournament team. Buonomo was important in getting possession time for Irondequoit. All together, Utz and Coholan finished with over half of the total shots for the Eagles (24/44). Overall, Irondequoit seemed unwilling to give up the pressure of the Titans. Throughout today's game, as well as the entire tournament, the Eagles played to win and demonstrated the drive necessary in a Championship team.

They now advance to the New York State Tournament starting with the Western Regionals at Canisius College (Section Six) on Tuesday, June 8th at 8:00 PM. They will taken on Hamburg, who defeated Amherst 9-1 in the Section Six tournament. return to top
