-- After playing a close first half that found the two last Class A teams left in the New York State Tournament, tied at 5-5, West Islip turned on the heat with eight unanswered goals in the second half to win their second State championship in a row.
The Lions of Section 11 (21-1) were paced by North Carolina bound, Nick Galasso, who had a goal and six assists in the game at Stony Brook University on Long Island in the last game of the day. Galasso set a Long Island scoring record with a staggering 500 career points.
Fairport goalie, sophomore Blaze Riorden kept the game close in the first half, making numerous spectacular saves for the Red Raiders (19-3). The Lions, however had a scoring run after the half time break, and although Fairport had some shots on goalie, Kyle Turi, the Lions offense scored seven goals in the third quarter. West Islip lost their first game of the season and have been winning ever since (21 games). They outscored their opponents, 46-16 in the NYS tournament and have won three of the last four championships, losing only to West Genesee in 2008.
Fairport ends its dramatic season at 19-3 and will graduate sixteen seniors, including nine who are planning to play in college.
In other State championship action today, Jamesville-DeWitt of Section three capped its undefeated season with an 11-5 win over Garden City of Section 8. Manhasset of Section 8 won their second Championship in a row (third in total) with a 19-6 win over Corning East of Section 4. The Trojans of Corning East, who won in 1990 have been to the finals 13 times, but this will be the last, as Corning East and Corning West teams will be combining into one team in 2011.
