May 28, 2010 - The Class A seeds fell as predicted, with Fairport, R-H, Penfield and Pittsford all winning and the Class C did the same with Aquinas, Bloomfield-Honeoye, Penn Yan and Geneva all winning as well. R-H played a close game with Webster Schroeder and had a five goal streak in the last nine minutes for the 12-9 win. B-H had the closest win of the day as they beat Midlakes 7-6 in a game that went right down to the wire.

-- Scoring the last five goals in the game, Rush-Henrietta won their quarter final game against Webster Schroeder with a score of 12-9. The closely matched teams, seeded fourth and fifth made the fans wait until the very end of the game to find the winner as both senior goalies, Corey Spuck (R-H) and Scott Tota (Schroeder) made dramatic saves throughout the game.
The Royal Comets scored the first two goals and looked powerful, scoring the first at 11:31 when Jake Alvarez (2a) hit Kenny Pattridge (2g) on the high crease. Several minutes later Torry Whitcher (3g) drove to the right and scored down low to give the Royal Comets a 2-0 lead at 7:38. After a couple of trips up and down the field, the Warriors came back with two goals of their own. Cody Consul (4g-1a) threw a hard shot from top right just as a man up was concluding. Johnny Murray (2g-1a) scored on a slow clear and before R-H could set up a defense. The 2-2 tie lasted less than a minute as Chauncey Scissum found Pattridge after a Royal Comet clear and made the flip pass assist to end the scoring in the first quarter with R-H up 3-2.
Although R-H started out with authority, the two quick goals by the Warriors got them back in the game, and as the second quarter started, Schroeder tied the score at three in the first minute. Spuck, who on a number of occasions charged out of the goal to check a potential receiver, did so against senior attackman Alex Powell. As Powell caught the ball from Murray, Spuck hit him but the ball came out of the top of the stick and found its way into the net. Twenty-five seconds later, Consul took the ball behind the net from the far left and drove a tight crease cut to the right side of the goal, beating his man and avoiding a slide. Less than a minute later, Rush came back with the same drive from Joe Perkins (4g), but Consul came back with another unassisted goal on the next offensive set and with a flag down. He scored again in the man up that followed on a hard side arm shot (and a pass from Murray) and although there was a six minute break in scoring, both teams finished up the half with two goals each.
Rush-Henrietta scored the first two, at 2:17 and then eight seconds later. Brad Sauln (3g) scored the first on a sweep from right to left and he scored again after picking up the face off ground ball and running it straight to the goal. A bad clearing pass was intercepted by a Schroeder long stick and Brett Farrell (2g) ended up with the ball which he popped past Spuck with 0:50 in the half. With very little time left, Schroeder called a time out in their defensive end and after clearing the ball, Pete Noto found Murray on the high right crease with 0:05 left and the Warriors had an 8-6 lead at the half time break.
Each team seemed to control (marginally) one quarter each and numerous two goal streaks offset by single goals that kept each team in check. The goalie play by Tota and Spuck was excellent, each senior stepping up with dramatic clutch saves.
Surprisingly, after fourteen goals scored in the first half, there was only one scored in the third quarter and it was from a drive from behind the goal and a one-handed wrap-around shot by Joe Perkins which took the Royal Comets to within one. The Warriors still led 8-7 after thirty-six minutes.
Schroeder added one more goal, at the 10:22 mark on a crease feed from Consul to Farrell who fired a rising shot that slid off Spuck's chest pad and up into the top of the net. With Schroeder up 9-7 the Royal Comets buckled down, controlled key ground ball opportunities and protected the ball as they scored five unanswered goals in the last nine minutes of the game. Alvarez picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and moved the ball to Perkins for an underhanded score at 8:51. Less than a minute later Whitcher tied the score on a run from a R-H clear. He scored the next goal, again after a clear, when took the ball from Tyler Badger, got past his man way outside and beat Tota in the one-on-one. Sauln scored on an outside shot with 2:27 left in the game and R-H up 11-9 and the R-H coaches trying to convince the players to take some time off the clock. After time outs by both teams, R-H was hit with an unnecessary roughness call that gave the Warriors a man up with 1:02 left in the game. The opportunity was lost, however as the R-H defense took the ball and sent it to Perkins, who finding himself unguarded went to the goal, scoring the last goal of the game in man down.
Although a great disappointment by Schroeder, the game was, for the most part, a close and exciting game. Even at the end there was great concern by Rush-Henrietta that Schroeder was capable to winning but Brad Sauln won 15/26 face offs, often picking up his own ground ball in the second half and that, along with key possessions by the Royal Comets, gave them the win.
Webster Schroeder ends their season at 6-11 and Rush-Henrietta (9-8) moves to the semi final round where they will play top seeded Fairport in Spencerport on Tuesday (5:00 PM).

-- Although Churchville-Chili took an early lead against the Panthers, Pittsford came back and dominated the remainder of the game to win 19-10. The Panthers won the first three quarters and tied the fourth quarter (2-2). Churchville-Chili played strong early on but could not keep up with Pittsford for the entire game. Offensively the Saints looked strong, but their defense and goalies could not stop the Panther onslaught.
In the cage for Churchville-Chili, Wolodia Huley started between the pipes. He made one save in the first ten minutes before he was relieved by Jack Corcoran. Corcoran finished the game with four saves. Alex Howell played the first three quarters for Pittsford and finished with three saves. In general all three goalies had difficulty stopping shots. In the fourth quarter, Conor Quinn took over the duties between the pipes for Pittsford and finished at 66% with four saves (including a point blank fast-break shot by Taylor Kolmer.
At the face-off draw, Churchville-Chili had a difficult time as Pittsford's James Burke finished with 15/22 (68%) with four ground balls. Midfielder Tyler Aycock led the Panthers in ground balls with seven, with six coming from the wing line. Defenseman Joe Dupra added another five ground balls to the Panther tally. For Churchville-Chili, face-off man Trevor Hodgins (5/10) led the team with seven ground balls. Defensemen Slavic Huley (5) and Nick Bruno (4) added the count for the Saints.
Standing out for the Panthers was senior attackman James Purpura. Purpura demonstrated that he has a number of abilities in his skill set during the contest. He finished the game with 5g-3a. The most impressive point for Purpura came with an assist in the third quarter. He had drawn a short-stick defender and took him behind the cage. He started his cut around the crease looking to beat his defenseman. The defenseman realized he was in trouble and looked to switch off with a long-stick defenseman. Purpura waited for the switch, and instead of shooting, hit Thomas Rodenhouse just as his defenseman moved. It was a text book example of heads-up lacrosse play and not the standard "all me" or one-dimensional driving that is all too common in high school lacrosse. Additionally, Purpura added three unassisted drives from behind the cage that resulted in goals.

-- The Penn Yan Mustangs and the Livonia Bulldogs are used to meeting in the postseason. For the past two years the two teams faced off against one another with the sectional championship on the line. The odd thing about today's match up was that the two were meeting in the quarterfinals of this year's sectional tournament with Livonia seeded #7 and PY #2. A nice crowd was on hand at Mustang Field to watch the Mustangs, who have won 12 consecutive sectional titles, take on one of the section's most prolific scorers, Livonia's Jeff Wester, who entered the game as Section Five's leading point man with 127 posted on the leader board.
Penn Yan opened the scoring on their second possession after the opening face off when sophomore midfielder Jordan Owen dodged the right alley hard and fired a shot off the right hip of Livonia goaltender Ethan Jamison for a 1-0 Penn Yan lead. The Mustangs won the ensuing face off, one of only four wins at the "X" for the Mustangs in the game, only to give the ball back to Livonia after some time spent in the Bulldog's defensive end. Livonia put the ball into the stick of Wester who took the ball at the top of the box and tried to dodge the left alley, but Penn Yan long pole defender Scott Miller made it difficult for him to penetrate. This was pretty much the theme of the first three quarters for the Bulldog offense as Wester's continuous attacks were thwarted by Miller who was without doubt the defensive star of the game for the Mustangs as he held Wester to no points through three and a half quarters of the game while recording 3 takes and scooping up 5 ground balls. Penn Yan took a 2-0 lead when Owen scored, unassisted, on a hard alley dodge. Following a broken Livonia clear just moments later, Penn Yan defensive midfielder Tim Yetter pick up a loose ball at midfield and sprinted down the middle of the field in an unsettled situation and put the Mustangs up 3-0 when he beat Jamison high. The first quarter ended with the Mustangs up 3-0.
Defense was the name of the game in the second quarter as both teams were able to tally just one goal each. Livonia pulled to within two goals with 5:18 on the clock when freshman attackman, Josh Wester ran from behind the cage and beat goalie Cody Richardson low and off stick to make the score 3-1 Penn Yan. Penn Yan came back to take the lead to three goals once again when their leading assist man, Preston Maciejewski, found eighth grader Bradley Voigt alone on the crease for his lone goal of the game and a 4-1 Penn Yan lead at the break.
Penn Yan came out in the third with a methodical offense that not only took time off the clock, but kept the ball out of the sticks of the Bulldog's high powered offense as well. The Mustangs scored three more goals in the third quarter. Their first goal came from junior middie Adam Stork who found sophomore attackman Dylan Yonts cutting left in front of the net to give Penn Yan a 5-1 lead. Moments later, following a Bulldog penalty, the Mustang EMO converted, when Yonts found Owen alone in front. Stork circled left and put his shot past Jamison to make it 7-1 to end the third quarter scoring but with eight seconds left in the quarter, Livonia was flagged with a penalty and Penn Yan held the ball for possession at the top of the last quarter.
The Mustangs wasted little time pushing the score to 8-1, just 0:21 seconds in when Yonts found Preston Maciejewski to the left of the goalie for his first goal of the game. The remainder of the period belonged to the Bulldogs however as they scored four goals over the final eleven minutes to pull within three. The final from Mustang Field, Penn Yan 8 - Livonia 5.
Offensively the Mustangs were led by sophomore Jordan Owen who dodged hard today and tallied 3 goals on 5 shots. At the "X", Livonia's Jeff Wester who won 12/16 (75%). In goal, Cody Richardson played the entire 48 minutes and was solid, recording 8 saves while allowing 5 for 62%. He also picked up 7 ground balls.
Livonia closes out the 2010 season at 10-8 while Penn Yan improves to 10-8. The Mustangs play Geneva in the sectional semi finals on Tuesday, June 1st at Waterloo's Tom Coughlin Stadium at 7:00 PM.

The Pride took the early 2-0 lead after the first quarter which they extended to 4-0 early in the second quarter. They looked poised to ride an easy victory but the Eagles had something else in mind. They came back with the last two goals of the second quarter to make it 4-2 going into halftime.
The Pride scored the first goal of the third quarter during an extra-man attempt to take the 5-2 lead. Once again the Eagles fought back. Midlakes scored the next three goals to tie the game at 5-5 going into the final quarter. Bloomfield-Honeoye scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter. What later turned out to be the winning goal was scored by Luke Blain with 3:58 remaining in the game to give the Pride the two goal lead. Blain scooped up a ground ball on the crease after it bounced off the pipe and finished into the back of the net. With 2:47 remaining in the game the Eagles had another extra-man opportunity and they converted with a goal from Cory Gray. The Pride controlled the ball for the remainder of the game to secure the win.
