-- In a non-league game at Seneca Falls, this afternoon, Bath-Haverling beat Mynderse Academy 19-10. The Blue Devils controlled the first quarter, winning 5-4 but the Rams came back with five goals in the second and eight goals in the third for the win.
Mynderse started off in a big way, when senior attackman Matt Koopman (5g) scored in the first minute of the game on a drive from the left side of the goal a few steps from the goal-line extended. He used this same drive for a number of his five goals scored in the game. At 9:36, the Mynderse man up unit made it 2-0 when senior long stick defenseman Jessie Janas scored from the top of the box when a long-stick side arm and a blazing shot got past Ram goalie, Robert Masti. Less than a minute later, Bath scored their first goal, also in man up, as junior midfielder Nick Rossi, on the right wing, took a feed from junior attackman Zach Reed and put it past Mynderse freshman goaltender Tim Trickler.
With the score then tied, Mynderse returned with two in a row, spanning a four minute period. Aaron Peterman ran a sweep across the top of the box and, after drawing a double, dumped the ball to Brett Wood for an outside shot and the first one. Wood drove from outside left and finished with a crease feed to Koopman for the second goal. Scoring for the quarter was not finished, however, as three goals were scored in a 0:55 second period. Bath scored in man up when Reed took the ball from Martuscello and dodged the corner of the man-down box and shot from front and center. Ten seconds later, Nick Rossi picked up the ground ball from the face off and took it right to the cage. The Blue Devils ended the first quarter scoring with a transition goal from Peterman to Koopman, who was alone on the far side corner. The first quarter ended with Mynderse up 5-4. Five of the nine goals were scored in man up situations.
At the top of the second quarter, Bath began to dominate, scoring five unanswered goals spanning an eight minute period. Senior attackman Mark Martuscello scored on a fast break clear and a feed from Reed that put him one-one-one with Trickler. After a number of non-productive transitions at both ends of the field, Reed drove from behind the cage, hugging the left side of the crease, and dodging two defenders before scoring an unassisted goal at 7:29. Nineteen seconds later Reed scored again after Rossi made a low crosse-crease pass that Zack underhanded into the goal. It was Reed again, at 6:37, this time in man up and a crosse-crease feed from Martuscello and at 3:08 Reed scored unassisted, dodging two defenseman with a flag down. The flag was waved off after the goal. Junior attackman Mike Clark scored for Mynderse (assisted by Danny Galusha) and the half ended with Bath up 9-6.
The Rams took the score to 13-6 with the first four unanswered goals of the second half starting just thirty seconds into the third quarter, with an unassisted goal by Rossi, driving from the right wing. Reed drove a double into a dump to Chapman who put it into the high left corner. After a fifteen second scramble for a ground ball by a half a dozen players, Brian Gable picked up the ball and ran it right to goal at 10:08 and on the next face off the same scramble (with fewer players) produced the same goal, this time by Rossi who scored at 9:52.
Mynderse came back with a scored by Nick Giovannini. Bath scored two more goals, the first by senior midfielder Matt Nesbitt (from Rossi) in man up and the second by Reed (from Gable). At 2:30, Koopman dodged on after clearing the ball forcing a one-on-one with Masti, but the Rams came back fifteen seconds later with a side-arm blast by Rossi after a drive down the right side from a Ram clear. Peterman, behind the cage, found Jerry Jones alone in front of the goalie. Jones made a great catch and fired off a quick release shot for the goal. With 0:21 left in the quarter, Gable, running up field from a Rams clear forced a fast break and found Chapman alone on the right post. The quarter ended with Bath up 17-9.
At the top of the last quarter, Rossi found the ball after a broken Blue Devil clear and forced another inside fast break that gave Martuscello the eighteenth Ram goal. Martuscello scored again on another broken clear, this time receiving the ball from Gable at 9:59. Although both teams were playing substitutes by this time the scoring subsided and the last goal of the game was from Mynderse when Koopman drove the alley after a Blue Devil clear and bounced the ball past Rams goalie Adam Force.
The Rams won this game with a great deal of ball time, greatly orchestrated by senior face off man, Matt Nesbitt who won all fifteen of his draws. Rossi, who added nine of eleven and Matt Schlink who won five of six, gave Bath 91% of the draws. That ball time allowed the Rams to take over fifty shots on Trickler and although there is a great discrepancy between his number of saves (Mynderse reported 23 and Bath reported 15), Trickler had an amazing performance, stopping a number of point-blank shots and twisting his body for a number of low-to-high saves. The freshman made some beautiful outlet passes, but was discouraged when the receivers missed or lost possession at the midfield. Reed finished the game with 6g-3a on twelve shots (eight on) and Rossi finished with 6g-4a on fifteen shots (nine on). Their performances alone would have won the game, but the Rams saw seven other players make the offensive scorebook.
Bath (6-8) plays Batavia on Thursday and finished their regular season with Brockport on Saturday. Both games are at home. Mynderse (5-9) hosts the Pride on Tuesday and travels to Midlakes on Thursday.
