-- special reportPenfield came out to an early 6-0 lead, and then held out late onslaught by RH to win 13-12. Penfield scored the first six goals and led 7-2 going into the second quarter before RH scored five unanswered goals to tie the score at 7-7. The game continued to go back and forth with no team having more than a one goal lead for the remainder of the contest. RH took the lead 12-11 with 4:04 remaining in the game. However, Penfield scored at 3:39 and 3:28 to secure the win.

The contest's opening goal was scored when Tucker Nelson drove from behind the cage and found Alex Miles open on the crease. One minute later, Matt Condon drove the top and finished into the back of the net. The Patriots continued the pressure. Nelson drove to the cage but goalie Corey Spuck came up with the save. With the ball loose on the crease, Miles came in, scooped up the ground ball and finished into the back of the cage. The next goal came during extra-man offense. pen-rhFor the first of three times in the game, Nelson fed the ball to Dan O'Brien for the goal. This goal (along with the third goal from the pair) was scored with an outside shot from the top of the restraining line. The next goal was scored with a feed from O'Brien to Will Schoeneck. Only 0:06 later, face-off man Connor Russell picked up his own ground ball and went all the way to the cage. Russell finished the game with a 71% day at the draw. In addition he led his team in ground balls with 14 (including picking up 12 ground balls on the face-off). The Patriots now led 6-0 with 3:02 remaining in the first quarter. RH scored their first goal during an unsettled situation with Chris Aycock scoring unassisted. This was the sixth RH shot of the quarter, but the first one to be on cage. RH scored their second goal with 0:33 remaining in the quarter. Brad Sauln took a shot that was saved by goalie Jamie Solomon and like the Penfield goal earlier, Torry Whitcher picked up the loose ball on the crease and finished into the back of the net. The final goal of the quarter was scored once again with a ground ball on the crease after a save. The initial shot was taken by O'Brien; then Schoeneck picked up the loose ball, but instead of shooting looked back to O'Brien across the crease for the goal. Penfield led 7-2 at the end of the first quarter.

pen-rhIn the second quarter RH stepped up their game and added four goals to the scoreboard while holding the Patriots scoreless. RH scored their first goal during an extra-man opportunity with an unassisted goal by Aycock. The second goal was scored by Joe Perkins, who after receiving the ball in the middle of the field, dodged the incoming slide and scored top-shelf. The Royal Comets continued the pressure with a goal during a broken clear attempt. Aycock intercepted the ball near the midfield line; he brought the ball up-field and found attackman Austin Freudenvoll open on the crease for the goal. The fourth goal of the quarter was scored after a bad slide from the defense that left Aycock open near the crease (Joe Perkins had the heads up play to feed the ball to Aycock). The Patriots maintained the lead going into halftime (7-6), but the Royal Comets had the momentum going.

The Royal Comets only took 1:04 to tie the game at 7-7. The goal was once again scored during an unsettle situation. The ball was quickly pressed up field from near midfield and concluded with Whitcher finding Jake Alvarez. The game was tied for the first time since 0-0 with 10:56 remaining in the third quarter. The game became tied at every score from 7-7 until 12-12 with no team having more than a one goal lead. Penfield's Schoeneck scored after a broken clear; Nelson caused the initial take from the defense, but it was Schoeneck who picked up the ground ball and finished with the goal. RH came back again with a goal from Chauncey pen-rhScissum. Scissum scored from GLE with a feed from behind and on the other side of the cage from Perkins. Penfield's Matt Bilak scored with a drive from behind the cage one-on-one to score with 7:51 remaining in the third quarter. The next tying goal came during a man-down situation for the Royal Comets. The play began with a strong save by Spuck off a shot by Schoeneck. The ball was quickly cleared up the field and Scissum scored his second goal with yet another assist from Perkins. With 0:18 remaining in the quarter the Royal Comets took their first lead of the game 10-9. The goal was scored with a drive from behind by Alvarez; Alvarez looked across the crease to Perkins for the goal. The third quarter ended with RH leading 10-9.

In the fourth quarter, Penfield tied the score only 0:39 into the game with the second feed from Nelson to O'Brien. RH scored the next goal with a drive from the outside by Aycock to take the lead once again. Penfield's next goal came during man-up with the third and final feed from Nelson to O'Brien. O'Brien scored the goal much like his first man-up goal with an outside shot. RH took their final lead of the game with an unassisted goal from Sauln. The Royal Comets led 12-11. Penfield tied the game only 0:25 later when Nelson rocked back and forth behind the cage and eventually sneaked past his defenseman for the unassisted goal. The game winner was scored on fast-break face-off with O'Brien picking up the ground ball from the wing and taking it all the way to the goal only 0:11 after the last goal. RH won the last face-off of the game and had another shot at the cage. However, they could not capitalize and the Patriots took the ball back to their offensive end. The Patriots stalled the ball for nearly the entire final three minutes. With 0:12 remaining the Royal Comet picked up the loose ball near the midfield line and called a time-out. They had one more shot at the cage with 0:02 remaining, however Aycock missed the cage and time expired.

Although the Patriots took the early lead, the Royal Comets demonstrated that they can play at the same level as Penfield. The Royal Comets won the ground ball battle 48-44. Leading the charge for RH were face-off man Sauln (9), Aycock (7), Saxon (6) and defensemen Zach Ackerson (5) and Chris Swanson (5). For Penfield, O'Brien (5), Justin Rehm (4) and Charlie Cummins (4) joined Russell. In the cage, Spuck finished with twelve saves for RH and Solomon finished with ten saves for Penfield. Overall, both teams played strong in different quarters. The Patriots stepped up early in the first quarter to take the lead and late in the fourth quarter to secure the win. The Royal Comets demonstrated that they will not give up, fighting from a deficit and then fighting to stay in the game. return
