-- special report The SportsFive ranked number one and number two teams faced off today in what could be a preview of the Class B championship and it was Thomas over Canandaigua 11-10. Canandaigua's last loss came at the hands of Corning East early last year and had been unbeaten in the last thirty games.

The first quarter started off slowly with a great deal of transition and numerous shots off the mark but by the quarter Canandaigua had a one goal lead, 3-2. With each team scoring two goals in the second quarter, the Braves still led 5-4 at the halftime break.

A strong third quarter saw the Titans take a 3-1 advantage and a 7-6 lead by the end of three quarters. Thomas scored at 10:52 to take a two goal advantage in the fourth but Canandaigua returned with a goal at 8:11 and then tied the game at 8-8 at 7:46. A strong effort by Tom LaCrosse kept the Braves in the offensive game at this point. Canandaigua was ahead 10-9 with 4:52 left, but thom-cathe Titans came right back to tie the game at 10-10 with 4;39 remaining. JT Hauck scored the final goal for the Titans with 24.6 second left in the game and, after gaining possession, kept the ball away from Canandaigua for the win.

Key players for the Titans included Jack Hinderland (4g), Zach Crawford (3g) and JT Hauck (2g-2a). Ken Tomeno (2g) won fifteen of twenty face offs, which gave Thomas critical ball time, particularly toward the end of the game when the pressure was on. Don Grace who made 14 saves for Thomas, including a dramatic one in the last minutes of the game was also a large factor in the game.

Canandaigua had quite a few shots miss the cage and unlike the precision passing game that they played last weekend when the beat Fairport, spent most of their play-making in single dimensional drives and passing around the outside of the Titan defense. Although they possessed large amounts of ball time, they had numerous turnovers without productive shots on cage. In the last quarter, however, based greatly on individual efforts, they nearly staged a comeback.

Thomas gets to savor their win over the weekend as their next game is on Tuesday when they travel to HF-L. Canandaigua will study the video and prepare to host Churchville-Chili on Tuesday. return

-- special report Rush-Henrietta started slowly, but outscored Webster Schroeder 11-7 in the second half to cement their 13-11 win over the Warriors. The Royal Comets scored six unanswered goals to end the second quarter and start the third quarter moving from being down 1-4 to leading 7-4 with 5:33 remaining in the third quarter. Going into the fourth quarter, Schroeder re-took the lead 9-8, however the Royal Comets stepped up again with another streak of three goals (and five of the next six) to keep their lead. There were six goals scored in the final three minutes of play.

Schroeder's Cody Consul scored the first three goals of the competition all unassisted. Consul scored the first two driving from behind the cage and the third during a slow break from the midfield line. Consul finished the game with a team leading 5g-1a. Consul also took 13/37 shots for the Warriors. RH added their first goal of the game with 0:26 remaining in the opening quarter when Joe Perkins drove from behind the cage. The first quarter ended with the score 3-1 in favor of Schroeder.

rh-schroSchroeder added another goal half way through the second quarter, with a dead ball drive by Eric Saltrelli where he found Alex Powell open on the crease for the goal. Schroeder led 4-1 with 6:50 remaining in the first half. RH added their first of six straight goals with a face-off fast-break from Chris Aycock. Aycock picked up the ball from the wing line and brought it all the way down for the goal only 0:12 after the Schroeder goal. Both teams jockeyed back and forth for position during the remainder of the first half. The Warriors had difficulty clearing the ball; at one point Jake Alvarez intercepted a pass during a clearing try and shot at what appeared to be an open goal. Schroeder goalie Scott Tota made a running and diving save from 10 yards out, stopping the ball with the extended shaft of his cross. Tota played well throughout the game; although he only finished with ten saves, many were incredibly difficult saves. The second quarter ended with Schroeder still holding their two goal lead from the first quarter.

The second half was a different team for the Royal Comets. RH was composed and although they were taking similar number of shots (21 in the first half 22 in the second half) many more were on cage (9 in the first half and 14 in the second half). The Royal Comets took the pressure up a couple steps in the third quarter. 1:03 into the quarter RH took first blood. During another clearing attempt by the Warriors, Aycock intercepted the ball and found Joe Perkins open up field for the goal. Exactly thirty seconds later RH scored again with an outside shot by Brad Sauln. Sauln led his team in ground balls with nine and also finished at 60% at the face-off draw. Tying the scoring caused the Warriors to call a time-out and attempt to regroup, but it was not enough. The Royal Comets took the ball down and forced a few too many shots on the cage (four missed shots in a row). With 7:26 remaining in the third quarter the Royal Comets took the first lead of the game with an unassisted by from Jake Alvarez. The coaching staff for RH felt one of the missed shots was a goal that tore the net and after stopping the play to inspect the net, play resumed with Alvarez having the ball. Alvarez took the ball straight from the side left into the crease and put the ball into the back of the net. Another minute later and RH extended their lead with a cross-crease feed from Alvarez to Austin Freudenvoll. Less than thirty seconds later the Royal Comets scored their sixth straight unanswered goal after a shot by Torry Whitcher went wide of the cage and Perkins scooped up the loose ball behind the net. Perkins came up around GLE and put the ball into the back of the cage.

At this point the Royal Comets had their own three goal lead (7-4). Schroeder came back with two goals of their own with another unassisted goal from Consul (during man-up) with 4:36 remaining. The next Schroeder goal came just over a minute later and began with a RH fast-break. RH had a fast-break going up the field with Alvarez taking the shot. Tota came up with another of his strong saves and quickly looked up field to find Powell breaking near the midfield line. Powell brought the ball up and found Brett Farrell open on for their fast-break goal. Schroeder brought the score within one goal. However, it was RH that scored next duringrh-schro another clearing situation. Much like Tota, RH goalie Corey Spuck had a number of impressive moments for the Royal Comets. Spuck, on this play, took the ball all the way up the field during a clear and, after the slide, found Perkins unguarded on the crease. Schroeder scored the last goal of the third quarter only 0:12 later with a face-off fast-break of their own. Long stick defenseman Ryan Martin picked up the ground ball and found Consul open in the attack. Consul looked to Farrell for the goal to keep the Warriors within one goal. RH held on to an 8-7 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Schroeder came out of the gates in the fourth quarter with a vengeance. Schroeder scored their first goal of the quarter during man-up to tie the game. Johnny Murray found Cody Henry open with and outside shot to tie the game. A cross-crease feed from Powell to Consul gave Schroeder the lead back after 11:22. However, the Royal Comets stepped up and scored the next three goals (and five of the next six) to take the lead back and hold on to it. RH's Aycock scored with a fast-break from the midfield line. Three minutes later another fast-break gave the Royal Comets the lead back. Aycock found Freudenvoll open across the crease for the go ahead goal. Freudenvoll's goal came at 3:06 remaining in the game. Another five goals were scored before the end of the contest. RH added another goal 0:33 seconds later when, during a subbing opportunity, Sauln took advantage of the distraction to drive past his man and score. Schroeder scored their own goal on a face-off fast-break 0:14 later with long stick Mike Blood scoring (assisted by attackman Farrell). 0:10 after the Schroeder goal, RH face-off man Sauln found Perkins open for a face-off fast-break of their own. The next goal was over a minute later and occurred against an open net. Schroeder was pressing out with their goalie, attempting to get the ball back and Jackson Sadowski took the shot on the open goal (assisted by Whitcher). The final goal of the game was scored by Powell (assisted by Farrell) with 0:46 remaining. Sauln won the last face-off and the Royal Comets stalled the ball for the remaining time.

RH definitely had the volume to win the game. Both teams had 30% of their shots resulting in goals; however the Royal Comets outshot the Warriors 43-37. Perkins and Aycock combined for 21 shots for the Royal Comets. Schroeder won the ground ball battle 39-37. Face-off man Murray finished at 53% for the Warriors (8/15) and led in ground ball production for Schroeder with nine. Defensemen Blood and Roach both added five ground balls to the team tally. In addition to Sauln's nine ground balls, Aycock and Whitcher both added five. In the cage for RH, Spuck finished with eight saves. return
