-- special report It took more than seven minutes for either team to score, but Pittsford did score first and last and after a 10-2 half, beat visiting Penfield 14-5. The Panthers played excellent defense and their offense moved the ball like it was tournament time.

Junior Matt Gold driving behind the net to the right wing, dished off to senior midfielder TJ Iuppa who scored first for the Panthers at 4:35. Less than two minutes later Thomas Rodenhouse scored after receiving a high cross-crease pass from Iuppa. Junior Alex Kober, driving from "x" beat his defenseman and when the slide was later, ended up on the winning end of a one-on-one with Penfield goalie Jamie Solomon giving Pittsford a 3-0 lead. Penfield scored their first goal at 1:13 when sophomore midfielder Matt Condon beat his man outside and shot past Pittsford starting goalie, Alex Howell.

The Panthers led 4-1 at the end of the first quarter, but a narrow Penfield stick checked during the break, gave the Panthers possession at the top of the second quarter and a three minute non-releasable man up opportunity. The Panthers made the most of it and in what was clearly a defining event, scored four goalies during the penalty time. Pittsford moved the ball quickly throughout the game, but without the pressure of even play, moved the ball exceptionally well during the man up play. Gold scored the first goal at 11:41 and then another at 11:10, both with feed from the top to his point on the right wing. Although the Patriots got control of the next face off there was a defensive takeaway before they could shoot and on the way back, senior attackman James Purpura scored on a drive from the right wing. With 0:18 left in the penalty, Gold scored once again, this time on a feed to the crease from Jack Lauroesch With the Pit-PenPanthers up 8-1, the Patriots scored at 6:52 when sophomore attackman Mike Bilak drove from behind the goal and found the back of the net with a bounce shot. With an underhand shot from the right wing, Steven Troop scored an unassisted goal for Pittsford at 4:13 and a minute and a half later Rodenhouse scored from the top on a pass from Iuppa on the wing. Pittsford led at the Half 10-2.

Pittsford started to make personnel changes after the half, and unloaded the bench by the fourth quarter. Alex Howell (4s/2ga) left the goal at the half and was replaced by junior goalie Conor Quinn. The Panther scorings slowed down, but the added two unanswered goals in the third. Rodenhouse, on the left wing scored on a feed from Burke up top at 4:07 and senior defenseman Joe Dupra ran the ball from end to end for an unassisted goal at 3:04. ThePit-Pen Panthers led after three quarters, 12-2.

Penfield started with two goals in the last quarter. Bilak scored again on an outside dodge from right front and senior attackman Will Schoeneck added one after batting a loose ball into the next at 6:52. After Pittsford scored on another wing feed (sophomore middie Corey Parke from Gold), Conor Quinn (3s/3ga) left the Pittsford goal and sophomore goalie Luke Loveys took the last five minutes for Pittsford. Schoeneck scored Penfield's last goal with a cross-crease feed from Tucker Miles. Pittsford's Cory Parke picked up a loose ball behind the Penfield goal and ran to the goal for an unassisted last goal of the game.

This was a good game for the Panthers, whose defense played well up to expectations, being patient as needed and being aggressive when called for. The Pittsford offense, which has on occasion, been eager to get to the goal, move the ball extraordinarily well in this game. Their efforts to find the best last pass gave them a number of goals that were simply unstoppable.

Penfield's Connor Russell was 12 of 18 at the face off (60%) and his wins gave Penfield more than their share of the ball time. He continues to be one of the top face off players in the area. Pittsford's James Burke, who is also a top face off man won nearly half of his attempts.

Pittsford (7-1) plays at Churchville-Chili on Thursday. Penfield (4-5) travels to Victor. return

--  With a strong finish and five goals in the last quarter, McQuaid Jesuit won an exciting 8-7 game at Penn Yan tonight. In a game that displayed strong defense by both teams, the Mustangs scored first with an unassisted goal by Adam Stork as he drove the alley to the right of McQuaid goalie Pat Sheridan. That was the only score of a tightly contested first quarter.

Both teams scored three goals in the second quarter and the Mustangs led at the break by a 4-3 margin despite sophomore goalie Cody Richardson making only one save and junior Anthony Luppino winning 3/9 at the face off "x".

Penn Yan came out with a solid performance in the 3rd quarter as Richardson was able to turn away all four shots that he faced. On the offensive end of the field, senior Nate Nichols scored unassisted back-to-back goals to stretch the Mustang lead to 6-3 heading into the final stanza.

The Knights took control during the last twelve minutes. McQuaid quietly inched their way back into the game and midway through the quarter they knotted the score at 6-6 and a short time later following a Penn Yan turnover Tim Caton scored for the Knights with 2:50 left in the game to put them up 7-6. A penalty with 1:57 left put Penn Yan in the man up where Jordan Owen scored to tie the game at 7-7 with 1:47 left. The book for Eastridge: Nick Manaci (1a), Ethan Printy (4g), Chris Giruzzi (3g), Mike Mortillaro (1g-2a), Goaltending: TJ Ennis 15s/13ga = 54% (48 mins).

-- special report Greece Arcadia/Olympia found their second win of the season after holding Eastridge scoreless in the third to win 13-8. Eastridge played a strong 36 minutes; however, the Lightning came strong and played the entire game. The Lightning had 63 ground balls and 54 shots (while holding Eastridge to 42 ground balls and 32 shots).

Eastridge came out early with Ethan Printy scoring the first two Lancers goals (unassisted). The first was scored with an outside shot with 6:36 remaining and was followed by a fast-break goal only 0:38 later. Printy finished the day with four goals for the Lancers and led his team in shots with eleven and ground balls with ten. The Lightning came back with one of their own when Robert Kitchen fed the ball from behind the cage to Dustin Lenz Emmi, who was waiting on the crease. Only 0:28 after the Lightning goal, Eastridge scored their third goal with a similar feed from behind the cage from Mike Mortillaro to Chris Giruzzi. The next goal was even faster as Kendrick Heintzelman picked up his own ground ball and passed it up field to Kitchen, who with an inside dodge, put the ball into the back of the net. The first quarter ended with Eastridge maintaining a 3-2 lead.

In the second quarter, both teams played nearly equal and each scored three goals. Greece Arcadia continued their scoring streak with three more unanswered goals to move to a 5-3 lead before the Lancers came back. Greece scored the tying goal with an inside feed from Kitchen to Dylan Mahan. The next goal came less than a minute later when Mahan scored during a scrum on the crease. Mahan shot the ball over his head in the general area of the goal, where it found the back of the net. Only 0:12 after Mahan's goal, Heintzelman won another face-off, except this time he fed the ball to Nick Capone for the goal. Only two and a half minutes into the second quarter the Lightning held a two goal lead. Eastridge came back with three of their own spread out over the remainder of the second quarter. Mortillaro drove from behind the cage for the first of Eastridge's three goals at 5:45. With 2:17 remaining in the first half, Printy added his third goal (once again unassisted, however this time during extra-man offense). Printy scored his only assisted goal of the game with an outside shot and a feed from Nick Manaci. Eastridge had taken back the one-goal lead with 1:00 remaining in the first half.

The third quarter was all Lightning and there was nothing that the Lancers could do about it. Just in the third quarter, Greece Arc/Oly took 21 shots and had 18 ground balls. To compare, Eastridge had five shots and eight ground balls. The Lightning were also 5/6 at the face-off. Overall, the face-off was controlled by Greece Arc/Oly throughout the game. Heintzelman finished the game at 80% (16/20) with a team leading 18 ground balls. The Lightning had four different scorers add to their tally in the third quarter. David Powlowski scored two goals along with one assist in the third quarter. By the end of the third quarter Greece Arc/Oly led 10-6.

The fourth quarter was once again a close quarter, but the Lancers did not half enough left to mount a significant comeback and the Lightning just held them off the remainder of the game. Eastridge scored first in fourth quarter with a drive from behind from Giruzzi. His shot was initially stopped by goalie Tyler Catalfano but momentum carried the ball over the plane. Catalfano played the third and fourth quarters and finished with seven saves (78%). Greece Arc/Oly came back with two goals of their own with Heintzelman scoring during man-up (assisted by Kitchen) and Mahan scoring after a cross-crease pass from Powlowski. The final Lancer goal came after a dead-ball restart when Mortillaro found Giruzzi unguarded on the crease. With 0:12 remaining in the game, Heintzelman scored the final Greece Arc/Oly goal after a fast-break.

Overall, the control of the face-off by Heintzelman and the ground ball game in general were key facets of the Lightning victory. The Lightning controlled the ball much more the Lancers and had more opportunities at the cage. Dustin Lenz Emmi (8), Powlowski (8) and Kitchen (6) also had significant ground balls for Greece. Goalie TJ Ennis (7), Giruzzi (6) and Luke Martello (5) added to the Lancer ground ball tally. Ennis played the entire game for Eastridge and finished with 15 saves. The first two quarters between the pipes for Greece Arc/Oly saw Shane Trost completing four saves. return

--  Five unanswered goals spanning the third and fourth quarters was all that Irondequoit needed to defeat Victor 12-9. The game was close for the first three quarters but the Eagles capitalized in the fourth quarter to cement their victory.

Irondequoit opened the scoring first with Greg Coholan finding Ian Brooks open only 0:37 into the game. Brooks was one of two Eagles to have 3g-1a (along with Mike Utz). Victor's Trevor O'Shea scored the first Blue Devil goal to tie the score at 1-1. Irondequoit controlled the next eight minutes and added two unassisted goals. Emmy Poccia and Erik Kleehammer each scored goals in the first quarter to take the 3-1 lead. Victor's O'Shea came back to assist the second Blue Devil goal with a pass to John Maloney. Victor came back with another goal of their own with 0:04 remaining in the quarter with D'Angelo's first goal. The Blue Devils were in control of the game at 7-5 going into halftime.

With 8:02 remaining in the third quarter Victor still held a two goal lead; however, it did not last, with Irondequoit adding two more goals in the third and three more early in the fourth to take a three goal lead into the final four minutes of play. Each of the five goals was scored by a different Eagle; Kleehammer, Poccia, Utz, Max Kostyk and Coholan.

The final two goals of the game, coming at 2:20 and 1:50, were scored by Mattice for Victor and Brooks for the Eagles (assisted by Coholan). Overall, the Blue Devils played a great game with the Eagles but Irondequoit kept up the pressure and played an entire game. Both teams took approximately the same number of shots (28-27 Irondequoit); however, Irondequoit only missed the cage once and the Blue Devils missed the cage 11 times. The difference in goalie play was noticeable. Irondequoit split goalies at halftime with Tyler Nash playing the first two quarters and making three saves and Eric Fischer playing the third and fourth quarters and making four saves. For Victor, Steve Basile played the entire game and finished with 15 saves. return
