-- Aquinas scored on all seven of Thomas' penalties in their 16-9 win over the Titans. The Little Irish won each of the first three quarters and held a 13-5 lead going into the final quarter. Thomas finished 3/7 in extra-man offense. In total, 11/14 penalties had goals scored during their duration (Aquinas scored one of their goals during man-down).
Aquinas came out strong, scoring four goals in the first quarter, while holding the Titans scoreless. The game was going back and forth, when Thomas was given their first penalty, a one minute slashing call at 8:17. Aquinas scored their first goal 43 seconds into the extra-man when passing the ball around the outside, Anthony Bianchi shot from near the restraining line for the goal. Five minutes later and the Titans are assessed a second slashing call and once again Bianchi scores. This time, however, he scored when Austin Gorman cut from the top and found him cutting around from behind the cage. Gorman came back less than a minute later with a goal of his own (assisted by Klay Heston). The final goal of the first quarter was also scored during a penalty, however, this time Aquinas was man-down when Mike Messina drove around behind the cage and finished into the back of the net. Overall the Titans had six shots during the first quarter; however, only two were on cage.
In the opening two minutes of the second quarter the Titans attempted to make their first comeback of the game and it was once again penalties that were their downfall. The first two Thomas goals were scored with single player drives from the outside. The first came from Jack Hinderland and the second came from Kyle Rothfuss. Hinderland's was initially saved by Aquinas goalie Erich Wischmeyer but then momentum carried it into the goal and Rothfuss scored his on a high bounce shot. Thomas had brought the game back within two goals when once again there was a flag down for slashing. Aquinas looked to Austin Gorman this time (with an assist from Heston). Four minutes later another slash was called against the Titans and once again Gorman was given the ball. Gorman came from behind the cage appearing to look for a feed and instead snuck the ball into the back of the net. Less than a minute later, defenseman Manny Magliocco came down and put the ball into the back of the net to give Aquinas a five goal lead (7-2). Thomas converted their first extra-man opportunity with JT Hauck assisting Hinderland. Thirty seconds after the Titan goal, Aquinas had yet another man-up attempt at the cage, this time with Gorman assisting Bernard Gauthier. The Little Irish led 8-3 going into halftime.
In the third quarter Aquinas came out scoring, adding two more to their tally before the Titans found the back of the net. Both of their goals were scored at even strength. The first was scored when Brendan Hall fed Bianchi from behind the cage and the second was scored during fast-break with long stick midfielder Anthony Starnino assisting Heston with 8:00 remaining in the quarter. Thomas scored the next goal 0:13 later with a face-off fast-break. Face-off man Kenny Tomeno picked up his own ground ball and fed the ball to John Zawacki for the goal. Tomeno finished the game at 50% (6/12 at the draw). Aquinas added three more goals before the Titans were able to score again. Billy Lombardi scored on a fast-break and Messina scored with his own drive from behind the cage. The final Little Irish goal of the quarter was scored once again during extra-man offense, after the Titans were given an unsportsmanlike penalty. Gorman assisted Gauthier for the goal. The Little Irish had their largest lead of the game at 13-4. Thomas came back with one more before the quarter expired with Hauck assisting Rothfuss with 0:42 remaining.
In the fourth quarter the Titans outscored the Little Irish 4-3. Thomas scored the first two goals of the quarter, both assisted by Hauck. The first goal was scored at 10:23; the play began after Aquinas was told to keep it in the box and, after stepping out the Titans got the ball. The Titans came straight up and scored on a fast-break. The second Titan goal happened when Hauck found Hinderland open on the crease. Aquinas came back with three goals of their own before the end of the quarter, including their final extra-man goal. Heston (from Starnino) scored the first goal, followed by two unassisted goals by Messina. Thomas added the final two goals of the game. Both were scored by Rothfuss and assisted by Justin Bird and both were scored during extra-man offense and outside shots. The Titans played two goalies; Don Grace played the first half and part of the third quarter and finished with eight saves. Zack Mayer took over in the third and finished at 50% with three saves. For Aquinas, Wischmeyer finished just under 50% with eight saves.
At the face-off, Aquinas' Messina finished 10/16 (63%) and picked up a team leading nine ground balls. Starnino, who played a lot of time on the wing, also picked up seven ground balls for the Little Irish. For Thomas, Tomeno finished with six ground balls while Brad Hutton, Zach Crawford, Hauck and Chris Dalton all had three ground balls.
Overall, the Little Irish capitalized on many opportunities there were presented with and that at the end of the day gave them the win. The Titans, on the other hand, often had trouble with the little things. Many times they were one catch away from an easy goal, but couldn't finish on the crease or, instead of shooting, they were looking for that elusive "one more pass". The man-down defense for the Titans had difficulties all day, and for whatever reason could not stop the Little Irish offense.
