Schroeder 8 - Gates Chili 3

updated  special  --  Fourth seeded Webster Schroeder defeated twelfth seeded Gates-Chili 8-3. The key to the game was the defensive play from Schroeder. Both teams had difficulty scoring early in the game and it was the Schroeder defense of Tommy Roach, Sean Deegan and Mike Blood in the close defense, Scott Tota in the cage, and a number of skilled defensive midfielders that held the Spartans scoreless for 31 minutes spanning three quarters.

The first quarter demonstrated a close match between what appeared to be evenly matched teams. Schroeder scored first with an unassisted goal from Cody Consul. Consul finished the game with 3g-1a. Gates-Chili came back with Grant Ferguson scoring an unassisted goal. Schroeder's next goal came off a strong ride from the Warriors. Johnny Murray passed the ball quickly up to Brett Farrell who shot against Jason Baetzhold. With 1:56 remaining in the game, and during an extra-man opportunity Schroeder scored their third goal. A hard shot from Saltrelli after a drive from the top, was once again initially saved by Baetzhold, however in the end was counted as a goal. The score ended 3-2 with Schroeder leading at the end of the first quarter.

Throughout the second and third quarter, the Spartans were allowed four shots and only one on cage. The defensive play from the Warriors was constant. The man-down unit for Webster ate up three penalties, allowing no shots during 2.5 of man-up opportunity for the Spartans. Webster added three goals during the second and third quarters. Consul scored the lone goal of the second with Pete Noto and Chad Willmes scored the two goals of the third quarter. The score was 6-2 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Willmes opened the scoring. Consul drove along side the right crease and after passing GLE, found Willmes open across the crease. Gates-Chili scored their last goal of the game with 5:28 remaining in the game with a broken clear and a fast-break 1-on-0 shot from Webb. The play started with a bad pass during a clear with Zach Smith coming up with a ground ball at midfield. Smith passed the ball to Ferguson who found Webb open on the crease. The final goal of the game was scored during a fast-break by Consul (with an assist from Willmes).

Baetzhold played the entire game for the Spartans and finished with five saves. Scott Tota played the entire game for the Warriors and finished with 8 saves (73%).
