Thomas 16 - Irondequoit 8
-- Webster Thomas and Irondequoit tied (5-5 ) at the end of the first quarter, but Thomas scored seven goals in the second quarter for a 12-7 half and won 16-8 in this game of heavyweights at Webster today.
"Where was the defense," was the question of the first half, as the teams seemed to score at will in the first quarter. Drew Coholan scored the first of his four goals, just forty seconds into the game with his well known drive right down the middle, bull dodging past anyone in his way. Less than a minute later, Thomas returned with an unassisted goal by William Gurowski who broke an Irondequoit clear, picked up a ground ball, and had a one-on-one with Eagle goalie, Tyler Nash. Irondequoit scored on their next possession when they broke a Titan clear with an interception by freshman attackman Nick Doktor who scored at 9:56. The Eagles scored the next goal in man up when Greg Coholan fed his brother, Drew, on the left side of the cage to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Jack Hinderland brought the Titans back just fifteen seconds later on a drive from behind the cage and JT Hauck tied the game at 3-3 when he took the ball on a substitution and ran it straight to the goal.
Irondequoit took its turn at 5:27 with a man up combo from John Padulo to Mike Utz. At 4:59 Thomas scored their man up goal with an outside shot by Pat Morrill. The Titans scored their first go-ahead goal just eighteen seconds later with a fast break setup from Hinderland to Nick Scalzo. As the first quarter started to wind down, Drew Coholan scored an unassisted goal on a drive to the right to tie the teams at 5-5.
At the end of the first quarter, Thomas received an unnecessary roughness call and before the call could be made, Irondequoit also picked up one, so both teams started the second quarter short-handed. Thomas scored at 11:24 on a cross-crease feed from Gurowski to Brad Hutton to give the Titans a 6-5 lead, but the Eagles came back with a tie with another outside shot from Drew Coholan. Thirty seconds later Thomas went up with a feed from behind the cage by Hinderland to Scalzo who was cutting to the crease. The Titans held that lead for a whole twelve seconds, as Erik Kleehammer scored on a fast break from the face off and a pass from Ian Brooks.
The game was tied at 7-7, but that was the last Irondequoit score of the quarter and Thomas added the next five goals over the next three and a half minutes to go into the half up 12-7. Hinderland was the first to score, on a drive past two Eagle defenseman from behind the cage. Scalzo scored an unassisted goal on a sweep from the top of the box. JT Hauck hit Hinderland for a fast break goal from a face off. Pat Morrill scored on an outside bounce shot that bounced on the hard grass surface over the shoulder of Nash and on his next trip to the offensive end Morrill used the same shot from the same spot for another bounce shot goal.
A great many Titan opportunities for offense came from Kenny Tomeno who won 13 of 15 face offs in the game and who often picked up his own ground ball, finishing with a team high six.
After a first half that saw nineteen goals, the second half was relatively quiet with the Titans winning the third quarter 2-1 and the final quarter 2-0. The Thomas defense became far more aggressive in the second half, and gave the Eagles far fewer opportunities to take shots. Austin Fox, who started in the goal for Thomas was replaced by Jim O'Neil in the second half.
The scoring started at 6:10 in the third, when Nick Doktor scored an unassisted goal from a clear. It was the last goal for the Eagles. Thomas scored from the next face off on a slow break that had Hinderland feed Scalzo giving the Titans a 13-8 lead. Senior defenseman Mason Hill broke up an Eagle clear and took the ball to the cage for an unassisted goal at 1:15 in the third.
Kyle LaVallee scored at 10:59 with a short pass from Scalzo to the wing and Hauck ended the scoring on a drive from the right to give the Titans a 16-8 win at home.
The Titans will finish their season on Saturday when they host Hilton. Irondequoit ends their regular season at 12-4 and will await their Class B seed on Sunday.
