Canandaigua 12 - Penn Yan 11   OT

special  --  SportsFive called this the "Game of the Week", and it truly was, as it took overtime for Canandaigua to beat Penn Yan 12-11 before the Mustang home crowd. The stands were full and the fence on the bench side was packed for what one fan said was the biggest lacrosse crowd at Penn Yan in many years.

ca-pyAlthough Canandaigua crushed the Mustangs in the first game, Penn Yan was a different team tonight. One of the keys was the face off work of Ty Trombley, who was 12 for 25 this time, including 7 of 10 in the fourth quarter which gave Penn Yan much more offensive ball time than was seen in the first game.

Canandaigua started off the scoring with the first two goals of the game. Tom LaCrosse shot low and outside for his unassisted goal against Ethan Kamholtz. Marshall Johnson won his own face off and took it straight to the cage to score the second goal just seven seconds later. Coach Brian Hobart's game plan included taking time off the clock on each set, so the Mustangs routinely passed the ball around the cage a couple of times before setting up their play. In the first half, this resulted in few shots on CA goalie, Nick King. The Mustangs lost control of the ball numerous times in the first half, which frustrated both players and coaches. This problem was solved over the course of the game, much to the credit of Coaches Hobart and Queener, who spent a great deal of the game, reassuring and calming the players.

ca-pyAt the start of the second quarter, Canandaigua was up 2-0 when, at 11:18, Anthony Luppino scored on a pass from Adam Stork. While Stork circled the crease, Luppino cut to the front for the score. Transition was the name of the game for the next seven minutes as the ball went to each offensive end, only to be lost or a shot to be saved. Canandaigua took the score to 3-1 when Brian Scheetz bounced the ball in the cage at 3:45 but Penn Yan came back fifteen seconds later when John Linnan picked up a ground ball at the face and gave it to Adam Trombley who scored from the top of the box. Johnson won the next face off and took it right the the goal, where Kamholtz made a fantastic one-one-one save and moved the ball back up field.

After moving the ball around the circle offense a couple of times, Adam Trombley took the ball from Stork and drove from the front center, throwing a hard shots while on the run and taking the score to a tie (at 3-3). Canandaigua scored with 1:35 left in the half when Deven Alves took an interior feed from Brian Scheetz, who pass started out as a shot. The Mustangs received a thirty second penalty and the man down successfully defended, but shortly thereafter, Scheetz found Tom LaCrosse for the last goal of the half, giving Canandaigua a 5-3 lead.

Although Penn Yan was certainly in the game in the first half, there were always playing from behind, but returned for the second half with an unusual amount of enthusiasm and determination. Brendan Minor scored on a fast break from a Mustang clear and a feed from senior defenseman Tim Dyer to take them to within one goal. The ca-pyBraves came right back however less than two minutes later when Tanner Scharr made a tight drive from behind the goal and popped it in the net, giving CA a 6-4 lead. Penn Yan took its turn, scoring at 4:43 on a cross-crease feed from Preston Maciejewski to Matt Osgood, making it a one goal game again. Johnson gave the ball to Bryan Peck who scored the final goal of the third quarter which ended with CA up 7-5.

Penn Yan started with possession at the top of the last quarter and made the most of it, scoring at 11:37 when Adam Trombley ran a sweep right from above the top of the box and scored (unassisted) to take the game to 7-6. Once again, Canandaigua responded, this time when Tanner Scharr picked up a loose ball in a very busy scrum and scored on an outside shot at 9:59. Forty-four seconds later, John Linnan scored on an outside shot with an assist by Preston Maciejewski to take the game to 8-7. Once again, Canandaigua responded, this time less than a minute later, as Johnson beat his defender outside and popped the ball just inside the pipe to give the Braves a 8-7 lead. On the next face off, Penn Yan returned when Ty Trombley picked up his own face and ran to the goal, scoring his unassisted goal and taking the Mustangs back to a one goal game.

At the seven minute mark, Penn Yan finally forced the tie at 9-9. Trombley scored on an unassisted bounce shot but the tie lasted less than two minutes when Gannon Osborn took a inside feed from Johnson to send the score to 10-9 for CA. Trombley tied the game again, this time with a pass from Matt Osgood, when he ran from the box during an exchange and was not picked up by the Canandaigua defense. Several minutes later, Penn Yan was assessed a penalty and the Braves capitalized when Tanner Scharr picked up the loose ball on the crease and ca-pyscored with 3:40 left in regulation and CA up 11-10. Osgood made it a 11-11 tie with 2:50 left in the game when he scored on a pass from Cole Castle.

Canandaigua won the next possession and took considerable time off the clock before losing the ball before they could take a shot. Penn Yan moved the ball up field, and Coach Hobart called for a time-out with 37 seconds left in the game. His players lost the ball before they could get a shot and the game was sent into overtime.

Canandaigua had the first offensive set in overtime and Ethan Kamholtz, who had 14 saves in the game made a big save early in the period. Penn Yan lost the ball on their clear and was hit with a thirty second pushing call, but the man down defense kept the ball away from the goalie. Thirty seconds after the penalty expired, Deven Alves received the ball on a crossing feed from from Marshall Johnson and scored the game winner with 1:29 left in the period.

RH came off the next face-off and scored from a fast-break. Brad Sauln won the face-off and took the ball straight into the center of the field and put the ball in the back of the net. Sauln finished the game 11 of 19 at the face-off (6 of 7 in the first half); four out of eight losses for Sauln were on technical losses. Aycock added his second of the game during an extra-man opportunity for the Royal Comets (assist from Jake Alvarez). Man-up was a key part of today's game. The Royal Comets scored on 2 of 5, while the Saints scored on all four man-up opportunities they were given. The score was tied 3-3 at halftime.

In the third quarter, RH took a stand and outscored the Saints 4-2. RH scored the first goal with another unassisted, man-up goal from Aycock. RH scored their final goal of the quarter with 6:12 remaining Aycock passed the ball to Chauncey Scissum for the goal. Churchville-Chili scored the last two goals of regular time with Yunker and Pavone both scoring (assists from Taylor Kolmer and Hemink). The first goal was scored on a slow face-off break. Hemink, took the face-off and picked up the ground ball in the defensive area. He pushed the ball up to Kolmer, who found Yunker open in front of the cage. The final Churchville-Chili goal was scored during man-up. After 48 minutes, the score was tied 8-8.

Sauln took the face-off for RH and won, after picking up his own ground ball. The ball was worked around behind the cage and Perkins was given the go ahead from the coaches. Perkins drove to the right side of the cage; as he made his way around to GLE he was checked and began to fall. However, he still had the presence of mind to get the shot off and the ball went into the goal, stick side high against goalie Adam DiFulvio.

Both goalies had an exceptional game and made the game as close as it was. Matt Gladstone, of RH, finished with 13 saves (62%). DiFulvio finished with 15 saves (63%).
