Why Some Stories Are Longer Than Others

 -  Many visitors to this site ask why some stories and game reports are longer than others or where we get the information for the posted articles. In some cases there is a lot about one team and almost nothing about the other.

The source of the information comes from three places.

First, Section Five Lacrosse policy requires that the Head Coach of each school (or his designee) send the score and other information as soon as possible after the game. Some coaches meet this requirement better than others. In fact some coaches send quite a bit of information while one or two don't even send in the scores. Some coaches only send information when they win but reports are needed win or lose.

Next we look at the news outlets that include newspapers, news web sites and team websites. Links to many of those sources can be found on our links page. For some of our articles we only have what was printed in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

Lastly, we now mark some reports as "SportsFive Reports". These reports are based on our own notes and the sideline scorebooks at the games we attend.

It is interesting to note how the information from each team can vary. This often happens on the "goalie saves" stats. We generally use a team's own report for those stats, even though they are usually higher than the opponents stats for the same person. In one game recently one team said their goalie made 25 saves, while their opponent said the same goalie made 16 saves. We reported that the goalie made 25.

At the end of each report (if needed) we print "[No report from ...]" which is used to indicate that we did not receive information from the coach of that team. On occasion, we get a report after the article is written and when we can, we update the information. We are now using an"Updated" graphic when this happens.

We are anxious to have as much information as we can in the game reports and feel that, when we can, we should mention as many players successes as possible.

If your team is not "getting ink" perhaps your coach needs help. There may be an adult fan who may help the team and the coach by becoming a "designated reporter". The coach can always send material, but in some cases, a parent or other adult can send in the post game material in a more timely fashion. You may wish to talk to the Head Coach about this as only the Head Coach can make the appointment.
