Aquinas 8 - Geneva 3

special  --  In a game that could be replayed at tournament time, Aquinas won a big game tonight as they defeated Geneva 8-3 at home. Both Aquinas and Geneva elected not to move up to Class B this year and remained in Class C, where they and Penn Yan look as early favorites for the final four.

The game started slowly, with lots of transition in the sunny but cold weather at Wegman Stadium at Aquinas. The Little Irish scored three unanswered goals in the first quarter. Junior attackman Bernard Gauthier was the first to score, at 7:22, when he received the ball from Klay Heston. Less than a minute later senior attackman Cameron Corsaro drove down the center of the field and scored his unassisted goals, putting the Irish up by two. With just over four minutes in the quarter, Brendan Hall cut to the crease from midfield and was rewarded with a pin-point feed from Austin Gorman who was behind the goal. Hall's wrist shot gave Aquinas a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Geneva came back with the first goal in the second quarter, when senior middie aq-genJeff Springmeir received the ball from Billy Eddington and shot a mid-ranged shot from out front and to the left of the goalie. Less than two minutes later Aquinas returned with a goal at 9:14 by junior midfielder Anthony Bianchi (assisted by Gauthier), giving AQ a 4-1 lead. After five minutes of constant transition, The Panthers came back to close within two goals after Frank Triana scored an unassisted goal after driving from the right.

The Aquinas long sticks including Manny Magliocco (LSM), Sam Torchia, Mike Owens and Casey Vogl provided strong and constant pressure, forcing numerous turnovers and running up field on many AQ clears.

Aquinas finished the half with two more goals, the first from Gorman who received a pass from Gauthier who was behind the goal and then driving from the short right of the crease. With a little over three seconds left, sophomore attackman Klay Heston scored with a pass from Gorman on an inside fast break created from an AQ clear. The Little Irish led at the half, 6-2.

The third quarter ran slowly, with no scoring until 4:51, when Cameron Corsaro drove from the right and parallel to the restraining line before adding his goal and giving AQ a 7-2 advantage. The goal was the only goal in the third quarter.

Geneva saw their last goal at 6:29 in the fourth quarter when defenseman Tyler Travis drove to the AQ cage, dodging several players before scoring (unassisted). aq-gen

The last goal of the game was demonstrative of the game, in general. Gorman, received a beautiful pass from long stick midfielder Manny Magliocco who came to the offensive end during a clear. Gorman, who missed his shooting angle, shot a behind the back shot for the 8-3 goal and victory for Aquinas. A big difference in the play of the game was the well developed passing game by AQ contrasted with a run-and-gun offense from Geneva. The team play by the Little Irish was also evident at the defensive end of the field, whereas the Panthers struggled with clears and controlled offensive ball time.

There is a great deal of lacrosse yet to be played this season, but this game gave the feeling of control to Aquinas, and that will certainly help them at the end of the year.

Scoring for Aquinas was Austin Gorman 2g- 2a, Cameron Corsaro 2g, Bernard Gauthier 1g-2a, Anthony Bianchi 1g, Klay Heston 1g-1a, and Brendan Hall 1g. Senior goalie Kraig Heston had 11s/3ga for AQ (6-1).

Scoring for Geneva were Frank Triana (1g), Tyler Travis (1g), Jeff Springmeier (1g), Billy Eddington (1a). Junior goalie Ross Dinan made 10s/8ga for the Panthers.
