Brighton and Arc/Oly Among Winners

There were six games games on Tuesday. Brighton, who did not win a game in 2008, is now 2-0 after their 9-5 win over visiting Eastridge. Marcus Whitman, playing their first Varsity game in school history, was leading 6-2 before the Greece Lightning came back and won 8-6. Churchville-Chili was 14-9 over Spencerport and Bath was a 19-5 winner over host Batavia. Livonia won a close one against R-H (8-7) and Pal-Mac beat East Rochester 10-3.

 

Brighton 9 - Eastridge 5

special report -- Brighton took an early four goal lead and then held off Eastridge for the next three quarters to win 9-5. The Barons played a strong game and were led by Evan Davis (5g). Davis controlled the offense to lead his team to their second win of the year.

bri-eastrBrighton scored the first four goals of the game. The first goal was scored at 9:00 when sophomore attackman Brackett Bourne scored on a fast break goal assisted by fellow sophomore CJ Wool. Wool finished with one goal and two assists. Davis stepped up for the next two Baron goals at 6:12 and 3:44. The first was scored when Davis dodged inside and took on four different Lancer's before forcing the ball into the back of the net. The second goal came after Eastridge was called for off-sides during a man-down situation and Davis took control of the ball and brought it straight down from the midfield line to score. The final Brighton goal of the first quarter was scored by Wool with a sweep from left to right.

With 2:52 remaining in the first quarter Eastridge scored their opening goal. Senior attackman Riley Austin shot the ball from outside and it was saved by Brighton goalie Kyle Hohmann. The ball, loose on the crease, was scooped up by Patrick Moyinhan and put into the back of the goal. Hohmann finished the game with 13 saves (72%) and was a key to the Baron's success. The first quarter ended 4-1 in favor of Brighton.

The second quarter was tied with each team scoring two goals. Matt Doehler, who led Eastridge with two goals, scored the opening goal of the quarter. Trevor Horne brought the ball down on a slow break and found Doehler in front of the crease for the goal. Brighton retaliated by adding two more of their own. The first was after a free clear with Steven Cregan finding Davis open in front of the crease and the second was scored during and extra-man offensive opportunity. Wool cut down the right side and found Mark Henrichs open for the goal. Eastridge scored one more goal 0:48 seconds later with Mike Mortillaro feeding Doehler. The score was 6-3 at the half.

Brighton came out early again in the third with goals at 11:15 and 9:50. Davis scored his fourth goal of the game with a hard shot from the right side. Jake Czwilinski initially stopped the ball, but momentum carried it into the net. Czwilinski had a strong game with 12 saves (57%). Bourne scored his second goal of the game with a ground ball and a goal after Czwilinski saved Cregan's shot. Brighton led 8-3 with 9:50 left in the third. Eastridge's Kevin Stapleton scored the next Lancer goal with 6:15 remaining, the goal was assisted by Austin. Brighton led 8-4 after three quarters.

bri-eastrEach team added one more goal in the fourth quarter. Davis added his fifth with a straight drive from the top. For Eastridge, Austin scored with a hard shot from GLE on the right side after Adam Sisson drew the double from the top. Sisson also took face-offs for the Lancers and finished 5/15 with 3 ground balls.

Sophomore midfielder Max Brauer took the face-offs for Brighton and had a great day winning 12/18. At the face-off Dan Pierce was exceptional for Brighton. Pierce won 1/3 of the total face-offs picking up six ground balls from the wing. Pierce led the team with 8 total ground balls. Also picking up gbs for the Barons were Maliek Likely (6) and Jake Silver (5). Silver also had three takes for the Barons.

Moynihan led the Lancers with 7 ground balls with Horne (4), Doehler (4), Czwilinski (4) and Jeremey Wolocki (4) also adding to the team total. Tim Davidson had two takes for the Lancers.

Scoring for Brighton were Davis (5g), Wool (1g-2a), Bourne (2g), Henrichs (1g), Cregan (1a).

Scoring for Eastridge were Doehler (2g), Austin (1g-1a), Moynihan (1g), Stapleton (1g), Horne (1a), Mortillaro (1a) and Sisson (1a).

Churchville-Chili 14 - Spencerport 9

 --  Churchville-Chili came together to win their first game of the season with a 14-9 score against cross town rival Spencerport. Churchville-Chili reported, "Spencerport played a spirited and physical game and managed to keep the score nearly even for the first half. Their physical play led to 10 penalties throughout the game with the Saints capitalizing on 7 of the 10 opportunities."

The score was tied after the first quarter with both teams scoring two goals each. Jon Hemink and Ryan Yunker scored for the Saints. Hemink led all scorers with 5g-3a and Yunker scored 4g-3a. Spencerport juniors Nick Fischer and Kristian Barbato scored for the Rangers.

The Saints came out in the third quarter scoring the first three goals at 9:05, 8:09 and 7:02. Yunker (assisted by Austin Kuntz), Scott Shamp, and Hemink (assisted by Yunker) scored for the Saints. The first and third goals of the quarter were scored during extra-man offense, the first from a pushing penalty and the second from a slash.

Spencerport scored two more goals in the second quarter (as well as the first two goals of the third) to take the 6-5 lead. Four different athletes scored for the Rangers: Kyle Mark, Rocky Gruttadauria, Sean DeMers and Fischer. With 7:22 remaining in the third quarter the Saints took back over the offense scoring five straight goals and holding Spencerport scoreless for the remaining time in the quarter. Yunker and Hemink each scored two of the goals with Shamp scoring his second goal as well. The score was 10-6 at the end of the third quarter.

Spencerport attempted to come back in the fourth with goals only 0:19 apart at 8:09 and 7:50. Mark and DeMers (assisted by Smith) scored for Spencerport. However, the Saints did not allow the Rangers to get any closer than two goals as they scored four straight in the fourth quarter. The final Churchville goals were scored by Alex Pavone, Zach Yehl, Hemink and Shamp. Three of the final four goals were scored man-up. With 2:24 remaining in the game Fischer scored the final goal for the Rangers with an assist from Mark.

Both goalies were around 50% with Spencerport's Tyler Laviere making 15 saves (51%) and Adam Difulvio making 9 saves (50%).

Leading in ground balls for Churchville-Chili were Keith Preston (12) and Hemink (6). Leading Spencerport in ground balls were Gruttadauria (9) and Kevin Heacock (8). Paul Wojcik (Spencerport) and Dan Fingland (Churchville) led in takes with 2 and 3 respectively. Preston led face-offs for the Saints with 15/22.

Scoring for Churchville-Chili were Hemink (5g-3a), Yunker (4g-3a), Shamp (3g), Pavone (1g-1a), Yehl (1g) and Kuntz (1a).

Scoring for Spencerport were Fischer (3g-1a), Mark (2g-1), DeMers (2g-1a), Gruttadauria (1g-1a), Barbato (1g), Heacock (1a) and Alex Smith (1a).

Bath 19 - Batavia 5

 -- Batavia Head Coach Chuck Hammon called this game the "tale of two halves" for Batavia. After posting a 5-4 lead at halftime, Bath came back in the second half for a 19-5 win over the hosts.

Batavia came out with an early lead on a goal by Joe Muoio from Chip Chapman 1:10 into the game. Bath answered a minute later with a goal by Tyler Reed. The first half went back and forth with Batavia leading at halftime 5-4. Bath came out in second half and scored in first 0:20 seconds with a goal by Nick Rossi from Zach Reed. After a scuffle, a Batavia player was ejected and received a 3:00 non-releasable penalty.

Bath scored four goals during the penalty with the help of face off middie Matt Nesbitt who controlled the whole second half winning 19 out of 24 face offs. The Rams never looked back as they scored 15 unanswered goals.

Batavia goalie Theo Hill played a great game with 14 saves in first half and 8 more in the second half (22s/19ga).

"Tyler Reed (5g-1a) kept us in the game and then Mark Martuscello (3g-4a) and Zach Reed (3g-3a) took the game over in the second Half," said Bath Head Coach Ken DiDomineck. "The defense led by Brent Harrison, LSM Tyler Hutchenson and freshman defender Trevor Lang had many great stick checks which helped goalie Chris Wolfer shut down the Blue Devils offense in the second half."

Scoring for Bath were Tyler Reed (5g-1a), Matt Nesbitt (2g-2a) who also won 79% of his face offs and added 10 gbs, Andy Nesbitt (1g), Mark Martuscello (3g-4a), Nick Rossi (2g), Zach Reed (3g-3a), Drew Wager (1g-2a), Brent Harrison (1g and 10 gbs), Eric Dickson (1a) and Brian Gable (1g). Chris Wolfer had 7s/5ga (43 mins) while Tyler Reed had 0s/0ga for the Rams (3-0).

Scoring for Batavia were Joe Muoio (2g-1a), Chip Chapman (3g-1a), Brandon Williams (1a) and Will Mulcahy (1a). Junior goalie Theo Hill recorded 22s/19ga for Batavia (0-1).

  

Arc/Oly 8 - Marcus Whitman 6

 -- It was the inaugural game for the Wildcats from Marcus Whitman and after three quarters it looked like they would win with their 6-2 lead. A three minute stick penalty, however, led to two extra man offense (EMO) goals for the visiting Greece Lightning who used the momentum shift and scored six unanswered goals in the last quarter for the 8-6 win.

"We played well for 3 out of 4 quarters. We learned some things, did some things well.
Our problems started with the 3 minute illegal stick," commented Head Coach Bruce Teague after the game. "Junior goalie Nick Cosmano played a great game and with 12 saves, he kept us in it early."

Scoring for Arc/Oly were seniors Joe Malovics (1g-2a) and Brandon Wood (3g). Freshman Rob Kitchen (1g-4a), sophomore attackman Richard Fischer (1g) and freshman middie David Powlowski (2g) added the rest. Freshman goalie Shane Trost recorded (9s/6ga) for the Lightning (1-1).

Scoring for Marcus Whitman were junior middie Jurrell Thompson (3g-1a), junior attackman Shawn Allen (1g-1a), sophomore Mark Personale (1g) and junior midfielder Perry Mortensen (1g). Cosmano had 13s/8ga for the Wildcats.

   

Pal-Mac 10 - East Rochester 3

 -- After a 1-1 tie at the end of the first quarter Pal-Mac finished with a 10-3 win at East Rochester. The Red Raiders led 3-1 at the half and then scored three goals in the third and four in the fourth quarter, while holding the Bombers to two goals in the second half.

Scoring for Pal-Mac were Greg Kier (5g-1a), Mike DeMar (2g-2a), Steve Brol (2g-1a), Mike Russell (1g-2a), Thomas Marble (1a) and Jeff Kier (1a). Senior goalie Tim Doyle had 8s/3ga for the Red Raiders.

Scoring for East Rochester were Nick Reiss (1g), Jordan Michele (1a), Clayton Vaughn (1g) and Kyle Knopp (1g). Junior goalie Hayden Walsh had 11s/10ga for the Bombers.

  

Livonia 8 - Rush-Henrietta 7

updated -- Livonia took the first quarter, 2-1 and led at the half 6-2. After the half-time break, Rush-Henrietta scored three unanswered goals to finish the third quarter down one goal.

Senior attackman Mark Mattiacio tied the game for R-H at the 8:30 mark in the fourth on a feed from junior attackman Joe Perkins. Less than three minutes later, Livonia scored the go-ahead goal when junior attackman Chris Bausch scored with an assist from junior middie Jeff Wester. The "Dogs" went up by two goals about a minute later with a goal from Wester (unassisted). Rush-Henrietta brought it back to a one goal game with a goal by Perkins (from Mattiacio) with 1:15 left in the game.

"This was a big win against a very tough Rush team," said Coach Brett Wood. "It pretty much was a tail of two halves in which we did a good job in the first of putting quality shots on goal in the first half while the rush goalie made some great saves all day. Our defense played pretty tough."

Scoring for Livonia were Mike Donals (1g-1a), Chris Bausch (4g-1a), Jeff Wester (2g-3a), Matt Girolmo (1g). Senior goalie Justin Becker made 6s/7ga for the Bulldogs (2-0).

Scoring for Rush-Henrietta were Mark Mattiacio (3g-1a), Jake Alvarez (2a), Joe Perkins (3g-1a) and Brad Sauln (1g). Corey Spuck recorded 9s/8ga for the Royal Comets (0-1).
