July 25, 2008 - New York City defeated Adirondack 8-5 in a close back and forth game. NYC used a five goal streak spanning the last three quarters to win the game. NYC kept ADK scoreless for about 15 minutes from 1:33 in the 2nd until 6:13 in 4th. The NYC win came on the shoulders of Forest Sonnenfeldt, who scored five goals. Andrew Fiore added 1g-2a to NYC. For ADK, Rory Nunamacher had 2 goals and Andrew Vivian had 2 assists led their charge.
The game was NYC's first win of the tournament. Sonnenfeldt scored four of his five goals unassisted, including his first goal of the game. ADK came back with one of their own when NYC overextended after a missed pick-off attempt and Anthony Zappone was left one-on-one sweeping to the left and put the ball away. The first quarter ended with the scored tied at 1-1.
ADK added two more goals in the second quarter, both of which were EMO goals. Jared Franze scored the first goal with an assist from Anthony Zappone. With ADK leading 2-1, Sonnenfeldt scored again to tie the score at 2-2. Rory Nunamacher scored after Andrew Vivian drove down the side and found him inside, giving ADK the lead once more. However, before the quarter ended, Sonnenfeldt scored yet again to tie the game at 3-3 going into the half.
The only goal of the third quarter was Sonnenfieldt's assisted goal. Andrew Fiore hit Sonnenfieldt cutting across from the top. NYC was up by one with three quarters down and one to go.
NYC kept up the pressure and scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter, each by a different midfielder in Brady Williams, Julian Musikant and Andrew Fiore. Fiore also assisted the goal by Musikant. With 6:13 remaining NYC was leading 7-3.
ADK tried to fight back, scoring the next two goals, however, it was not enough. Dan Fiora scored after a drive from Vivian from behind the net and a pass up top to him. Nunamacher added another goal for ADK at 5:06, but that was their last goal. Sonnenfeldt added his fifth goal as an open net goal when ADK was pressuring to get the ball back, but NYC controlled the remainder of the game and walked away with a win.
Sonnenfeldt took 10 shots with 7 shots on cage and 5 goals. Leading NYC in ground balls was Nicholas Stanley with 4 and Andrew Fiore with 3. For ADK, Tyler Baron and Jack Reilly had three ground balls each. Reilly had another strong game at the draw winning 7/11 with his long stick.
In the cage, the NYC goalie was spectacular and if Sonnenfeldt was the offensive reason for he victory one cannot ignore the defensive efforts of Samuel Grinberg. He played all 40 minutes and made 14s/5ga (74%). Grinberg made a number of point blank saves, and while Sonnenfeldt was scoring enough goals to win, Grinberg kept ADK from mounting a comeback.
In the cage for ADK was James Manchester who recorded 5s/8ga.
Scoring for NYC were Sonnenfeldt (5g), Fiore (1g-2a), Musikant (1g) and Williams (1g).
Scoring for ADK were Nunamacher (2g), Vivian (2a), Zappone (1g-1a), Franze (1g) and Fiora (1g).
