Championships
- 2006
The Section Five Tournament is now complete and the Champions have been crowned.
Geneva wasted no time and scored six first quarter goals on their way to a victory
over top seeded Brighton, 11-3. Penn Yan played a very close game but won 6-3
in their game with Waterloo and in the last game of the night, it was Penfield
and a high energy and tension filled game as they posted a 12-8 win over Schroeder.
The
first game of the day saw the top seeded Barons of Brighton playing the second
seeded Panthers of Geneva. The Panthers wasted no time as they
scored six first quarter goals while holding the Barons to a single goal. Junior
midfielder John Warner, scored the first two of his four goals at 10:53 and then
again, less than thirty seconds later (both unassisted).
Sophomore middie Sean Bennett scored an unassisted goal at 8:47 after he picked
up a loose ground ball. Tim Williams scored Brighton's goal in man up with an
assist from Robbie Asselin at 6:53, but Geneva came back with three more to end
the quarter. John Manion scored an unassisted goal on a drive from behind the
cage at 4:09 and less than thirty seconds later Warner scored on a drive from
the front. RG Gringeri, who had an amazing day facing off for the Panthers, scored
(unassisted) to end the quarter with Geneva up 6-1.
The second quarter belonged to Geneva as they added three more while holding
Brighton scoreless. Sean Braman scored on a feed from Kyle Boncaro at 9:56 and
again (unassisted) at 3:38. Boncaro ended the scoring for the half with a man
up goal and a feed from Greg Bonney with 0:36 left. The Panthers led at the half
9-1.
Geneva's Willy Rago used an inside roll dodge to score a man up goal at 10:23
to start the third quarter. Warner ended the scoring for the Panthers with an
unassisted goal at 8:31. The Barons scored at 1:58 when Asselin took the ball
from the front of the goal and scored with a shot high and off stick. Brighton
scored the only goal of the last quarter as Justin Hillery scored an unassisted
goal.
The Barons end their season with a 12-6 record. They did not go home empty handed
however as they were awarded this year's Team Sportsmanship Award by the Genesee
Valley Lacrosse Officials Association.
"The award is presented to the team whose players, coaches and fans exemplify
the true meaning of sportsmanship."
The Panthers will face the winner of the NYS out bracket game between teams from
Section Six and Section Ten, which will be played on Saturday. The next game
for Geneva will be on Tuesday although the site and time are still to be determined.
After
a loss to West Genesee in the first game of the year, the Penn Yan Mustangs
have gone on to win the last twenty games in a row, but this one, against
the number two seeded Waterloo Indians was a close game throughout the forty-eight
minutes. Steven Carlson, named recently by the Finger Lakes Coaches to the
USLacrosse All America team scored the only goal of the first quarter for
the Mustangs with an assist from fellow All American, Dan Mesler.
Mesler scored an unassisted goal just 0:39 seconds into the second quarter.
Sophomore midfielder, Ryan Cook gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead with an unassisted
goal at 7:55. Josh Mateo ended the quarter's scoring with an unassisted goal
at 1:22 when he moved the ball down field on a clear and then drove to the
goal to score the first goal for Waterloo. The Mustangs led at the half 3-1.
Excellent defensive play by the Indians and patience in their offense allowed
Waterloo to keep the game close and they brought the score within one when
Mateo scored just 1:07 into the third quarter when he received a pass from
Nelson Boyd. The Mustangs extended their lead with a goal in the last minute
of the quarter when Ben Odell took a pass from Dan McGuffie and Penn Yan ended
the third quarter up 4-2.
Penn Yan scored two more goals in the fourth quarter, starting with another
goal from Odell (assisted by Carlson) and ending with a goal from freshman
middie John Linan with an assist from Mesler. The last goal of the game was
scored by Waterloo's Mike Ruiz with an assist from Mateo at 4:56 and the Mustangs
won their 9th consecutive Section Five Championship with the 6-3 victory over
Waterloo.
The Mustangs will play their next game on Tuesday, although the time an place
will not be determined until Saturday's out bracket game between Sections Six
and Ten.
Although
the crowd was much larger, the same high tension and constant excitement
continued into the Class A final where Penfield captured
the title with a 12-8 win over Webster Schroeder.
Penfield scored the first goal, at 9:01 when Dave Malone scored on a feed from
Mike Arvan, but Schroeder returned five seconds later with an unassisted goal
by Grant Catalino. After a number of trips up and down the field, Scott Serron
scored for Penfield (assisted by Ben Foster) and then scored again seven seconds
later with a pass from the face off won by Kelly McKenna. With the Patriots
up 3-1, Penfield scored at 4:43 on an unassisted goal by Foster. Catalino scored
another unassisted goal for the Warriors on a bull dodge past two Patriot defender
to take the score to 4-2. Penfield ended the first quarter with a goal by McKenna,
assisted by Arvan and the Patriots took a 5-2 lead into the second quarter.
Although every ground ball seemed to be "the most important one of the
game", the Patriots continued to add points as Serron scored with an assist
from Arvan at 9:06. Webster returned at 7:26 with an unassisted goal by Austin
Orsini, but Penfield scored two more before ending the half up 8-3. McKenna
scored on a pass from Arvan and Arvan scored on a feed from Foster.
Webster Schroeder picked up ground in the third quarter, outscoring the Patriots
2-1 and ended the quarter with Penfield in the lead 9-5. Catalino scored another
unassisted goal at 6:27 and Arvan came back at 1:46 with an unassisted goal.
Thirty-three seconds later, Webster's Chris Ferry closed the quarter with an
unassisted goal.
Although in the end, both teams scored three goals in the last quarter, there
was a feeling that the Warriors were capable of staging a come back. Foster
scored first with a feed from Arvan and Connor Rice added one at 5:34 (assisted
by Foster) to give the Patriots a 11-5 lead, but Schroeder returned with two
quick goals and then another The first was by Andy Winslow (assisted by John
Pawluck), the second was by Catalino (unassisted) and the last was by Nick
Mooney (assisted by Jay Willmes). Penfield ended the game with Serron's last
goal which was assisted by defenseman Alex Nowak.
Senior goalie Dennis Costanza recorded 16 saves for the Warriors, a number
of which brought the fans to their feet. Brian Dell, likewise made a number

Championships - 2006
The Section Five Tournament
is now complete and the Champions have been crowned.
Geneva wasted no time and scored six first quarter
goals on their way to a victory over top seeded
Brighton, 11-3. Penn Yan played a very close game
but won 6-3 in their game with Waterloo and in
the last game of the night, it was Penfield and
a high energy and tension filled game as they
posted a 12-8 win over Schroeder.
The
first game of the day saw the top seeded Barons
of Brighton playing the second seeded Panthers
of Geneva. The Panthers wasted
no time as they scored six first quarter goals
while holding the Barons to a single goal. Junior
midfielder John Warner, scored the first two of
his four goals at 10:53 and then again, less than
thirty seconds later (both unassisted).
Sophomore middie Sean Bennett scored an unassisted
goal at 8:47 after he picked up a loose ground
ball. Tim Williams scored Brighton's goal in man
up with an assist from Robbie Asselin at 6:53,
but Geneva came back with three more to end the
quarter. John Manion scored an unassisted goal
on a drive from behind the cage at 4:09 and less
than thirty seconds later Warner scored on a drive
from the front. RG Gringeri, who had an amazing
day facing off for the Panthers, scored (unassisted)
to end the quarter with Geneva up 6-1.
The second quarter belonged to Geneva as they
added three more while holding Brighton scoreless.
Sean Braman scored on a feed from Kyle Boncaro
at 9:56 and again (unassisted) at 3:38. Boncaro
ended the scoring for the half with a man up goal
and a feed from Greg Bonney with 0:36 left. The
Panthers led at the half 9-1.
Geneva's Willy Rago used an inside roll dodge
to score a man up goal at 10:23 to start the third
quarter. Warner ended the scoring for the Panthers
with an unassisted goal at 8:31. The Barons scored
at 1:58 when Asselin took the ball from the front
of the goal and scored with a shot high and off
stick. Brighton scored the only goal of the last
quarter as Justin Hillery scored an unassisted
goal.
The Barons end their season with a 12-6 record.
They did not go home empty handed however as they
were awarded this year's Team Sportsmanship Award
by the Genesee Valley Lacrosse Officials Association.
"The award is presented to the team whose
players, coaches and fans exemplify the true meaning
of sportsmanship."
The Panthers will face the winner of the NYS out
bracket game between teams from Section Six and
Section Ten, which will be played on Saturday.
The next game for Geneva will be on Tuesday although
the site and time are still to be determined.
After
a loss to West Genesee in the first game of the
year, the Penn Yan Mustangs have
gone on to win the last twenty games in a row,
but this one, against the number two seeded Waterloo
Indians was a close game throughout the forty-eight
minutes. Steven Carlson, named recently by the
Finger Lakes Coaches to the USLacrosse All America
team scored the only goal of the first quarter
for the Mustangs with an assist from fellow All
American, Dan Mesler.
Mesler scored an unassisted goal just 0:39 seconds
into the second quarter. Sophomore midfielder,
Ryan Cook gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead with an
unassisted goal at 7:55. Josh Mateo ended the
quarter's scoring with an unassisted goal at 1:22
when he moved the ball down field on a clear and
then drove to the goal to score the first goal
for Waterloo. The Mustangs led at the half 3-1.
Excellent defensive play by the Indians and patience
in their offense allowed Waterloo to keep the
game close and they brought the score within one
when Mateo scored just 1:07 into the third quarter
when he received a pass from Nelson Boyd. The
Mustangs extended their lead with a goal in the
last minute of the quarter when Ben Odell took
a pass from Dan McGuffie and Penn Yan ended the
third quarter up 4-2.
Penn Yan scored two more goals in the fourth quarter,
starting with another goal from Odell (assisted
by Carlson) and ending with a goal from freshman
middie John Linan with an assist from Mesler.
The last goal of the game was scored by Waterloo's
Mike Ruiz with an assist from Mateo at 4:56 and
the Mustangs won their 9th consecutive Section
Five Championship with the 6-3 victory over Waterloo.
The Mustangs will play their next game on Tuesday,
although the time an place will not be determined
until Saturday's out bracket game between Sections
Six and Ten.
Although
the crowd was much larger, the same high tension
and constant excitement continued into the Class
A final where Penfield captured
the title with a 12-8 win over Webster Schroeder.
Penfield scored the first goal, at 9:01 when Dave
Malone scored on a feed from Mike Arvan, but Schroeder
returned five seconds later with an unassisted
goal by Grant Catalino. After a number of trips
up and down the field, Scott Serron scored for
Penfield (assisted by Ben Foster) and then scored
again seven seconds later with a pass from the
face off won by Kelly McKenna. With the Patriots
up 3-1, Penfield scored at 4:43 on an unassisted
goal by Foster. Catalino scored another unassisted
goal for the Warriors on a bull dodge past two
Patriot defender to take the score to 4-2. Penfield
ended the first quarter with a goal by McKenna,
assisted by Arvan and the Patriots took a 5-2
lead into the second quarter.
Although every ground ball seemed to be "the
most important one of the game", the Patriots
continued to add points as Serron scored with
an assist from Arvan at 9:06. Webster returned
at 7:26 with an unassisted goal by Austin Orsini,
but Penfield scored two more before ending the
half up 8-3. McKenna scored on a pass from Arvan
and Arvan scored on a feed from Foster.
Webster Schroeder picked up ground in the third
quarter, outscoring the Patriots 2-1 and ended
the quarter with Penfield in the lead 9-5. Catalino
scored another unassisted goal at 6:27 and Arvan
came back at 1:46 with an unassisted goal. Thirty-three
seconds later, Webster's Chris Ferry closed the
quarter with an unassisted goal.
Although in the end, both teams scored three goals
in the last quarter, there was a feeling that
the Warriors were capable of staging a come back.
Foster scored first with a feed from Arvan and
Connor Rice added one at 5:34 (assisted by Foster)
to give the Patriots a 11-5 lead, but Schroeder
returned with two quick goals and then another
The first was by Andy Winslow (assisted by John
Pawluck), the second was by Catalino (unassisted)
and the last was by Nick Mooney (assisted by Jay
Willmes). Penfield ended the game with Serron's
last goal which was assisted by defenseman Alex
Nowak.
Senior goalie Dennis Costanza recorded 16 saves
for the Warriors, a number of which brought the
fans to their feet. Brian Dell, likewise made
a number of dramatic saves and ended the game
with nine saves.
Penfield will advance to the Western Regionals,
at Canisius College in Buffalo on Tuesday. The time
will be determined on Sunday.
