Many Section Five lacrosse fans were anticipating
the possibility of a Class A team reaching the finals
this year, but a powerful Penfield team, fell just
a bit short as Orchard Park (Section
6) won a 12-11 game with a goal by Tom Mitchell
with 0:43 left in the game.
It was an unusal game for the Patriots, who, with
All American face off specialist, Kelly McKenna
winning many face offs throughout the season, faced
the Quakers' Nick Brink who with the rest of the
OP face off team, won more than three quarters of
the draws in the game.
The Quakers came right out in the first quarter,
controlling most of the ball time and used five
different players to take a 5-1 lead after twelve
minutes.
The Patriots scored five straight goals in the second
quarter, also using five different players to take
a 6-5 lead before OP scored the last two goals of
the half. Each team added two goals in the third
quarter which ended with the Quakers up 9-7.
Penfield came back in the last quarter tying the
game at 11 with a goal by McKenna with 0:56 left
in the game. Brink then won the next faceoff when
the ball was popped out to Mictchell on the wing.
Mitchell ran the ball to the goal and scored at
0:43. Although Penfield gained control of the ball
after the next face off, they were unable send the
game into overtime.
Orchard Park (21-1) will play West Genesee (Section
3) at 5:30 on Thursday at Cicero-North
Syracuse High School.
