HONEOYE
FALLS-LIMA
March
18,2006 - HFL has enjoyed a remarkable
first two years. Last year they finished
first in the Monroe County-2 division with
a 14-0 record and finished the year at 18-3
with their only loss in the regular season
to Schroeder. They
won the Class B side of the B/C tournament
and then lost to Penn Yan in the finals,
but still advanced to the States where they
won the Western Regionals against Amherst
(6-5) and lost to Jamesville DeWitt in the
State semi finals (10-6).
Six players were named to the
MC-2 All League list, including senior Mike Cintineo
(att), Jeff Price (att), David Uzialko (mid) and
Mike Brisbane (goal) and juniors Connor Burgasser
(def mid) and Dusty Mulcahey (def). Mike Cintineo,
Connor Burgasser, John Cintineo and Dusty Mulcahey
were named to the B/C All Tournament Team.
The Cougars ended the season with
the best offensive record in the Section (260 goals
/ 13 goals per game) and with the best defense as
well (88 goals against / 4.4 goals per game). They
were ranked 8th in the NYS poll and 96th in the Laxpower
National poll at the end of 2005.
Nearly half the team was lost
to graduation. Gone also is Head Coach Rick Pound,
who started coaching last years seniors many years
earlier and stayed with them through graduation.
He is now the Athletic Director for Skaneateles.
Replacing Pound is Tom MacMillan who has been a long
time Brighton assistant coach. The Cougars lost Brisbane,
Mike Cintineo (Ithaca), Price (Kent Prep School),
Uzialko (Potsdam), John Cintineo and Mulcahey (RIT).
Also gone are goalie Will Fargo, attackman Zane Witzel,
and midfielders Kevin Garvey and Kevin Marfioti.
The Cougars lost a great deal
of talent at the end of 2005 but there is still quite
a bit left for Coach MacMillan. He will start with
a very competent defensive unit of Burgasser, Mulcahey
and Brian Zavitz. The goalie will be a junior Pat
Roache, up from JV. The offense will see Dan Layfield,
Chris Stanton and Cade Norris who each saw significant
time last year.
Placed in the MC-2 division, the
Cougars have a schedule loaded with games they can
win this year and they should be one of the dominant
teams in the division. Coach MacMillan has added
some challenging out of league games with teams including
Corning East, Schroeder and Hamburg. Although they
are technically a Class C school, HFL moved up again
this year and will be playing in the Class B tournament
where they should do quite well.
