The top seeded Penn Yan (Class C), Irondequoit (Class B) and Fairport (Class A) each won their games on Championship Tuesday to earn their trips to the NYS tournament which, for Section V, starts on Saturday with the quarter finals games in Buffalo.

After a thirty minute storm delay, the Mustangs from Penn Yan defeated Livonia 14-6. It was the 17th Section Five Title for Penn Yan and the second in a row. Irondequoit played the closest game of the day when they beat Canandaigua 11-9. It is the third year in a row for the Eagles, who have now won sixteen Section Five Championships. In the third game of the night, with more than three thousand fans watching, Fairport beat Penfield with a score of 16-10 and held on to their undefeated season (19-0). It is the eighth Championship for the Red Raiders.

Between the three champions tonight, they have won 40 Sectional titles. Between Penn Yan and Irondequoit, one or the other have won a championship every year for the past twenty-five years. Six times they both won championships in the same year.

  --    Penn Yan won yet another Section Five Class C Championship this afternoon at St. John Fisher College. This year they defeated Livonia 14-6. After a 30 minute storm delay, the Mustangs scored the first three goals and seven of the first eight in their victory. Livonia fought back to 8-4 in the third quarter but got no closer. The Mustangs scored the next five goals to lead 13-4 going into the final quarter. The Bulldogs outscored the Mustangs 2-1 in the final quarter.

Leading in scoring for Penn Yan was attackman Bradley Voigt with 4g-2a. Voigt was named to the All Tournament team for the Mustangs. Attackmen Rion Davison (3g-1a), Sean Emerson (3g) and Ryan Maciejewski (2g-2a) also scored for Penn Yan. All combined, the attack accounted for 12 of the 14 goals. Midfielders Nate Spoor and Jordan Owen rounded out the scoring for Penn Yan. Midfielder Brandon Grace won16/21 (76%) face offs for Penn Yan. Grace and defenseman Kevin Kerrick each finished with seven ground balls. Davison finished with six for the Mustangs. The leading shooter for Penn Yan was Dylan Yonts. He finished with 13 shots with five on cage. Between the pipes, Brandon Maciejewski recorded four saves. He finished the four Section Five Tournament games with only 11 goals against including two shut outs and was named the MVP for the Class C Tournament.

Livonia was led in scoring by Wyatt Struble with 2g-2a. He was also named to the All Tournament Team. Attackmen Josh Wester (1g-2a) and Cody Cisco (2g) also scored for the Bulldogs. Bishopp finished with eight ground balls to lead his team. Midfielder Mitchell Kinney finished with seven ground balls and one goal for Livonia. Between the pipes, Ethan Jamison finished with 15 saves (52%).

Two players from the semi final rounds were named to the All Tournament team with defenseman Keanan O'Brien from HFL and attackman Alex Bianchi from Aquinas making the list. Penn Yan finished with six players named to the list: Ryan Maciejewski, Rion Davison, Bradley Voigt, Dylan Yonts and Mike Thiesmeyer. Brandon Maciejewski was named MVP in the cage for Penn Yan. Livonia rounded out the tournament team with three athletes: Wyatt Struble, Derek Bishopp and Mitchell Kinney.

  --    Senior midfielder Briele Caples scored six goals for Irondequoit to lead them to an 11-9 victory over sixth seeded Canandaigua. Caples finished with 12g-1a in the tournament and was named Class B Tournament MVP. Attackman Nick Doktor finished with 3g for Irondequoit. Midfielder Connor Moore finished with three goals to lead Canandaigua. Attackman Taylor Spike (2g) and midfielder Matt Scharr (1g-1a) also scored for the Braves.

17 of the 20 goals were scored unassisted. Of the three assists, two were from Canandaigua. Matt Scharr and Ben Northrup each had an assist, and Gunnar Miller, from Irondequoit also had one assist. The Eagles led off the scoring with an unassisted drive from Caples with 11:20 remaining in the first quarter. Seven seconds later the Braves tied the score with an unassisted goal from Moore. The Braves took their first lead of the game one minute later with an unassisted goal from Scharr. The lead stood for three minutes, before Irondequoit's Gunnar Miller scored. With 2:32 remaining Irondequoit took back the lead with an unassisted goal from Doktor. 0:37 later the Braves tied the game for the third time with an unassisted man-down goal from Dan LaCrosse. The score was tied 3-3 after one quarter.

In the second quarter Irondequoit took a substantial lead. The Eagles scored the first two goals with scoring from Doktor and George Jerman. The Braves scored their first goal of the quarter with a drive from Moore with 4:08 remaining. Irondequoit piled on two more goals on back to back drives by Caples. On his second goal, scored only 0:20 after the first, he was subbed into the game and was immediately given the ball and drove in for to score. Canandaigua scored their second goal with an unassisted drive from Taylor Spike with 0:26 remaining in the quarter. Irondequoit led 7-4 at halftime.

In the third quarter the game the teams traded goals early before Irondequoit scored two in a row. Caples added two for the Eagles and Doktor added the third. Canandaigua's lone goal was scored by Taylor Spike. Irondequoit led 10-6 after the third quarter.

In the final quarter, Canandaigua scored three early goals to bring the game within a single goal. Eric Munn scored the first goal of the quarter during man-up with Matt Scharr assisting. Two minutes later Moore scored unassisted. 0:46 later, Brian Feldman scored with an assist from Ben Northrup to bring the game within a single goal. The game remained close for five minutes. With 2:07 remaining the Eagles added their last goal to end the game. Caples scored his sixth goal unassisted.

Irondequoit won the face off draw with a 67% win percentage. Ben Brooks took all the draws for the Eagles and finished with 16/24. He also led his team in ground balls with seven. Midfielder Brandon Costanzo finished with four ground balls. In the cage, Eric Fischer finished with seven saves. For Canandaigua, Liam McGuey finished with a team leading five ground balls. Nick Como finished with four ground balls. In the cage, Michael Cuciti finished with eight saves for the Braves.

In addition to Caples being named the MVP, Irondequoit had five players named to the All Tournament team. They were Jake Schmidt, Nick Doktor, Gunnar Miller, Andrew Cordes and Eric Fischer. For Canandaigua, three players were named to the team. Taylor Spike, Matt Scharr and Brandon Kemp were each named to the All Tournament team. Two players from the semifinals were also named to the team with Nick Bruno (Churchville-Chili) and Dale Mattice (Victor) being named to the team.

Fairport 16 - Penfield 10

  --    Penfield came out strong, but it was not enough to stop Fairport from earning their seventh Section Five Title. The Red Raiders moved to 19-0 with their 16-10 win over the Patriots. Fairport is one of only three undefeated teams in New York State at this point. The Section 8 Class B team from Garden City is 18-0 and will face Wantagh (15-3) tomorrow. The Section 10 Class C team from Salmon River is 17-0 and will face Johnson City (15-4) tomorrow as well. The Red Raiders were led by Pat VanBortle who won MVP honors in the tournament. He finished with seven goals for Fairport. Midfielder Brian Martin (2g-4a) and attackman Derek DeJoe (2g-3a) were also added to the All Tournament Team.

Two in-game injuries hurt the Patriots. Face off midfielder and All American, Connor Russell was injured in the second quarter after coming down the field on face off fast break. He picked up his own ground ball and then passed it off to Andrew Huntington along the right side. After releasing the ball he was hit by a Red Raider, who was assessed a two minute penalty for cross checking to the head. Huntington crossed the ball to Andrew Schoeneck for the goal. Schoeneck's goal tied the game at 4-4 but the loss of Russell hurt Penfield and the Red Raiders scored the next nine goals. Earlier in the game attackman Matt Bilak was also injured. He was hit in the shoulder and was out for the rest of the game. Without one of their leading scorers and their top face off man, the Patriots had trouble bringing the game together. Additionally, as the game progressed the Patriots spent more time in the penalty box. Between the two teams there were 19 penalties for 21 minutes, including two, two minutes penalties and one 3 minute penalty. Seven of the goals were scored during either extra-man (5) or man-down (2) offense.

Penfield scored the final three goals of the contest, but it was too little too late. Huntington, who finished with 3g-5a for the Patriots, scored two of the last three and assisted the third. Both teams finished 50% at the face off draw. Russell finished 4/8 before he was injured and Dan Pulinski finished 8/16 as his replacement. For Fairport, Shane Stickle finished 14/26 (54%). Penfield was led in ground balls by Huntington, Russell and Pulinski with three each. For the Red Raiders, Stickle led with seven. Goalie Blaze Riorden finished with five and defensemen Marc Sweeney and Allen Thibodeau finished with four each. Riorden, Sweeney and Thibodeau were all named to the All Tournament team for Fairport. Between the pipes for Fairport, Riorden finished with five saves. For Penfield, Keith Keehn finished with 8 saves.

Five additional players joined MVP Pat VanBortle in being named to the All Tournament Team from Fairport. They were Derek DeJoe, Brian Martin, Marc Sweeney, Allen Thibodeau and Blaze Riorden. Three players were named to the team from Penfield. They were Justin Rehm, Andrew Schoeneck and Andrew Huntington. One player from each of the semifinal games were named with Steven Ricci (Pittsford) and Jake Montgomery (Hilton) receiving the honors.

There were a number of other honors given out during the Class A game. The GVLOA named the Irondequoit Eagles as their Sportsmen of the Year. The Players of the Year were announced at the conclusion of the Class A game. The award for Offensive Player of the Year was given to Gunnar Miller of Irondequoit. The award for Defensive Player of the Year was given to Blaze Riorden of Fairport. The award for Sportsman of the Year was given to Matt Condon of Penfield.
