| May 15, 2012 - The surprise results of the night was Fairport's dramatic win against Pittsford as the Raiders won 9-1. In other parts of the Section, Pal-Mac's Ben Reeves and Spencerport's Matt Kaser both broke the 100 point mark for the season. C-C won their game against Spencerport 10-9 and Mynderse won a 6-5 game from Bath. Penn Yan defeated Livonia 13-6. The other winners were Eastridge, Gates Chili, Penfield, Thomas, Pal-Mac, Gananda, Irondequoit, Geneva and HF-L.
--  In what was a surprising result, Fairport took the Pittsford Panthers 9-1 tonight in Fairport. The Red Raiders scored the first six goals, blanking Pittsford for the first thirty-seven minutes of the game. Senior goalkeeper  Blaze Riorden had a remarkable day in the Fairport cage making dramatic saves at critical times. His talents were not stretched greatly as the Panthers had limited shooting during most of the game and when they did shoot, had a number of shots miss the cage.
As is typical this year for the better skilled teams, both Pittsford and Fairport took a great deal of time at the start of the game to test match ups and look for points of attack. That, combined with some early goalie saves at both ends of the field, led to a single goal scored in the first quarter. Senior midfielder Derek DeJoe scored first on a shot from the left wing after receiving a pass from junior middie Jay Vakiener. Fairport's previous two shots were both stopped by Pittsford goalie Kyle Lake, but the third one in a row was too much. The quarter ended with Fairport up 1-0 in this highly contested game.
Fairport scored two lone goals in the second quarter. The first was on a drive from behind the goal by senior Pat VanBortle at 9:50. The second was at 4:47 when VanBortle fed senior attackman Kyle Sterzin on the inside for a point blank goal past Lake. The half ended with Fairport up 3-0.
The Red Raiders turned up the pressure in the third quarter, playing very aggressive defense and making some dramatic turnovers. The added ball-time and a good number of shots on goal gave  Fairport three more unanswered goals in the third quarter. The first goal was scored in the first minute when Vakiener scored an unassisted goal. Two minutes later senior midfielder Brian Martin scored the first of his three goals. The last goal of the third quarter was by DeJoe with an assist from Martin. The Raiders led 6-0 after three quarters.
Pittsford scored their goal at 10:13 in the fourth quarter when senior attackman Jack Lauroesch, standing on the high crease, caught a pass from senior middie Nino DiPasquale. He turned quickly and fired the ball into the top corner. Fairport returned with the next three goals, all in a three and a half minute span. The first was at 6:44 by Martin, assisted by VanBortle. The second was by senior midfielder Shane Stickle who picked up the ball on the following face off and ran it right to the goal. The last goal of the game was by Martin, who ran the ball down full field in transition.
Pittsford's strategy of bringing the ball down field and slowing the pace took a great deal of time off the clock, but they often lost possession without getting meaningful shots on cage. Fairport, on the other hand, seemed to be more deliberate. Drivers, like senior midfielder Derek DeJoe were clearly looking to go to the cage. The Raiders pressed the cage on nearly every possession.
Riorden once again came up with some big saves, particularly in the first half. He finished with 7s (88%). Kyle Lake also made some exciting saves, but the volume of Fairport shots overpowered the junior Pittsford goalie.
Fairport faces another test on Thursday when they finish their regular season by hosting Irondequoit. Pittsford has two more opportunities to prepare for the tournament. They travel to Victor on Thursday and finish their season by hosting Penfield on Saturday morning.

-- Livonia and Penn Yan played a close contest until the fourth quarter when Penn Yan scored five unanswered goals to win 13-7. The Mustangs had four goals from Dylan Yonts in the final quarter. The fifth goal was scored by Rion Davison.
The game began with an unassisted goal from Derek Bishopp for the Bulldogs. One minute later the Mustangs tied the game with a goal from Davison. He picked up the loose ball in front of the cage and finished into the back of the net. Livonia took the lead back in less than a minute with a goal from  Cody Cisco during an unsettled play. Penn Yan added the next two goals to take a one goal lead into the second quarter.
The Mustangs continued their scoring with two more goals in the first two minutes of play in the second quarter. Davison and Bradley Voigt added goals for Penn Yan with Ryan Maciejewski and Corey Grace assisting. The teams then alternated goals for the next three goals to end the half. Penn Yan led 7-5 going into halftime. Penn Yan scored the first goal of the third quarter with Yonts assisting Voigt. Livonia scored the next two goals in a two minute span to bring the game within a single goal. Cisco scored the first and Mitchell Kinney scored the second for the Bulldogs.
The report from Penn Yan reported, "As the team huddled in front of their benches prior to the start of the final period, it was clear that the Bulldogs had the momentum and their huddle was very loud. In front of the PY bench, Coaches Hobart and Queener could be heard giving directions and their players listened intently." Penn Yan came out of the huddle and dominated the final quarter. They demonstrated why they are a perennial Sectional favorite.
In the cage for Penn Yan, Brandon Maciejewski finished with 14 saves. Bishopp finished 12/23 at the face off draw for Livonia. Defenseman Sean Kidder finished with a team leading ten ground balls. Bishopp added another seven to the count. In the cage, Ethan Jamison finished with nine saves for the Bulldogs.

-- Penfield scored the first three goals of the game and the last seven goals of the game in their 13-4 win over Schroeder. The first goal was scored 0:08 into the game when Connor Russell won his own face off and took the ball straight to the cage. Russell finished 15/19 (79%) at the draw. He also led his team with 16 ground balls. The Patriots led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Schroeder scored the first two goals to bring the game within a single goal with 6:59 remaining. Attackman Kenny Nelson had all four goals for the Warriors. His first goal was assisted by Liam Wheatley and the second was assisted by Mike Austin. Penfield scored the next three to end the half 5-2.
Schroeder came out to start the third quarter the same way they started the second. Nelson scored last two goals with assists from Brett Zilliox and Jesse Caulkins. Penfield added three more in the third and four more in the fourth. In the cage for Penfield, Keith Keehn finished with three saves after playing all but the final four minutes. Nick Presicci played the final four minutes and made one save. For Schroeder, Willie Klan finished with eleven saves in all but the final five minutes. Robbie Wielandt played the final five minutes but did not record a save.

-- Ryan Cosgrove scored with 0:03 remaining in the game to lift Churchville-Chili over Spencerport 10-9 and secure the Division III Title for the Saints. During their first contest on April 21st, the Rangers forced the game into overtime before Churchville-Chili pulled out the win. Today's game was equally as exciting. The only in league loss this season for Churchville-Chili was against Hilton earlier in the year (they split 1-1 with the Cadets). Spencerport has only lost to Churchville-Chili (twice). Tonight's game was Teacher Appreciation Night and many of the Saints honored their favorite teacher.
The first half was back and forth with Spencerport scoring and Churchville-Chili tying four times in a row. Junior attackman Matt Kaser scored the first goal unassisted with 7:44 remaining in the quarter.  Kaser is currently the leading scorer in all of Section Five with 56 goals so far this season. The second most prolific scorer, 10 goals behind, is Jeffrey Bero of Marcus Whitman. Two minutes later and Churchville-Chili tied the score with a goal from Nick Gray. Gray's goal was assisted by Cosgrove. One minute after that Jeff Nitti scored unassisted for the Rangers to give them back the lead. Churchville-Chili did not tie the game for another five minutes. Gray scored the last goal of the quarter with an assist from Trevor Hodgins and 0:01 remaining. During the game there was a goal scored in the final 10 seconds of each quarter, two for Churchville-Chili and two for Spencerport. The game was tied 2-2 going into the second quarter.
Ben Tribunella scored the first goal of the second quarter for Spencerport. He scored unassisted during a man-up attempt. Three minutes passed before Churchville-Chili tied the game again. Pat Bonafede assisted Gray for his third goal of the game. In the second quarter it was Spencerport's turn to score as time expired. Levi Basynnski scored with only 0:06 on the clock to give the Rangers the 4-3 lead going into halftime.
Churchville-Chili made a goalie switch at halftime with Michael Yehl coming in. He started off on a big note by stopping a fast break by Kaser early in the quarter. Yehl finished with four saves for the Saints. Churchville-Chili scored the first goal of the quarter to tie the game for the fourth time. Aaron Buck scored unassisted at 1:36 into the quarter. Three minutes later Churchville-Chili scored again for the first set of consecutive goals by either team. Hodgins scored off an assist from Gray. Churchville-Chili also took their first lead of the game. Four  minutes later they extended their lead to two goals with a man-up goal from Bonafede, assisted by Kevin O'Donnell. With 1:01 remaining Kaser cut the lead back to a single goal with an assist from face off man Seth Miller. Miller was demonstrative at the draw and finished 12/20 (60%), winning many important face offs to keep the Rangers in the game. He also led his team with 15 ground balls. Two more goals were added before the end of the quarter. Gray added his fourth goal for the Saints and Nitti added his second for the Rangers. Nitti scored with 0:02 remaining in the third quarter. Churchville-Chili led 7-6 at the end of the third quarter.
Spencerport added on to their last second goal of the third quarter with two more to start the fourth quarter. The Rangers retook the lead with back to back goals from Kaser. The latter was assisted by Nitti. With 8:32 remaining in the game, Spencerport was back on top. Churchville-Chili scored to tie the game with a garbage goal from Buck. After a strong save by Tyler Schweikert, the ball ended up loose on the crease and Buck finished by putting it into the back of the net. Schweikert finished with 15 saves for the Rangers. Two minutes later Churchville-Chili took the lead again with an outside shot from Hodgins during a man-up attempt. With 4:26 remaining Churchville-Chili held a one goal lead.
With 1:47 remaining Kaser took the ball behind for Spencerport. He drove around the back of the cage and sent the ball across the crease. The ball hit Yehl in the back and rebounded between the pipes to tie the game. Kaser's goal was his 100th point of the season. Kaser is the one of two athletes tonight that reached 100 points. Miller won the ensuing face off and Spencerport had a shot to make the go ahead goal. He passed the ball to Nitti, who fired on net. Yehl came up big to keep the score tied. Churchville-Chili cleared the ball and called a time out. Cosgrove started with the ball coming off the time out and ran the clock down. With about 15 seconds left he drove at the cage. Spencerport stepped up and knocked down the ball. O'Donnell came up with the ball for Churchville-Chili, but his shot went wide. With 0:07 remaining on the clock, Bonafede began with the ball behind the net. He drove to the crease and hit Cosgrove as he cut across the crease. Cosgrove buried the shot left handed and gave Churchville-Chili the win.
Defenseman Nick Bruno led the Saints in ground balls with eight. Midfielder Nolan Jessop finished with five for Churchville-Chili. In the cage for the first quarter, Jack Corcoran finished with three saves.

-- Gananda scored eight goals in the first half to lead 8-1 on their way to a 13-4 victory over Midlakes. The Blue Panthers were led in scoring by junior attackman Zach Rink with 4g-2a. Freshman Riley Palmer also added 2g-2a for Gananda. In the cage, Steven Fisher finished with eight saves. Midlakes was led in scoring by Sean Peacock with 2g-1a. In the cage, Matt Brennessel finished with 19 saves.
-- Mynderse lacrosse came together tonight to face Bath in a fundraiser to support research for Transverse Myelitis. The Blue Devils defeated the Rams 6-5. Coach Christ Clemenson writes, "The Mynderse Lax Team would like to thank everyone who contributed and supported the fundraiser for Transverse Myelitis. We would like to pay a special thanks to Coach DiDomineck and the Bath lacrosse team for contributing to the fundraiser."
Mynderse scored the first two goals of the game with unassisted goals from Aaron Peterman and Casey Irland. Bath came back and scored the next two to keep the game close. Stan Law and Trevor Lang scored one goal each, also unassisted. The first quarter ended with the score tied 2-2. Mynderse scored first in the second quarter with another unassisted goal from Sean Anders. Seven minutes later Bath added their third goal with a tally from Brandon Dickson. The score was 3-3 after two quarters.
Mynderse added two unanswered goals in the third quarter to take the 5-3 lead. Aaron Peterman scored during a man-up attempt with an assist from Justin Hlywa. Four minutes later and Irland assisted Hlywa for a goal of his own. In the fourth quarter Bath scored first with a man-up goal from Lang, assisted by Bruce Rinker. Mynderse took back the two goal lead with 2:37 remaining. Irland scored what turned out to be the game winning goal. Coach Clemenson said, "it was fitting that Casey Irland scored the game winner on his night to raise awareness and contribute what was earned to research for Transverse Myelitis. Casey had a lot of heart and guts for playing …" Jeff Chapman scored the final goal for Bath with 0:39 remaining. However it was not enough to retake the lead.
There was a large difference in the reported goalie saves. Both teams reported strong performances by Mynderse goalie Tim Trickler and Bath goalie Andrew Clark. Bath reported Clark with 18 saves (75%) and Trickler with 12 saves (71%). Mynderse reported Clark with 25 saves (81%) and Trickler with 21 saves (81%).

-- Brighton kept the game close, but eventually HF-L's offense was too much for the Barons and the Cougars won 16-9. HF-L scored the first three goals of the game in less than five minutes with scoring from Jason Boike, Connor Flaherty and Ryan Kelly. Brighton tried to keep up the scoring and with 2:16 remaining in the opening quarter they had brought the game back to 5-4. HF-L scored the last two goals of the quarter to take a three goal lead going into the second quarter.
Brighton kept trying to climb back into the game and brought the game within two goals halfway through the second quarter. HF-L then added six of the next seven goals spanning the second and third quarters. They led 14-7 going into the final quarter. Leading in scoring for HF-L were Boike (4g-1a) and Flaherty (4g-1a). Nick Weston added 3g-2a and Ian Holtby added 3g-1a. Boike led in shooting with 12, five on cage, and Weston finished with 8, four on cage.
