-- Irondequoit came to Pittsford this afternoon for a highly anticipated game that did not disappoint fans. The low scoring game featured moments of great drama, some wonderful goalie saves, excellent defensive takes and an exciting finish. In the end, Irondequoit was a 7-6 winner.
Pittsford scored first. Senior midfielder Corey Parke scored at 6:42. It was the first of his two goals in the game as he drove from the right side, dodged one defender and scored with an overhand shot. The ball took a number of trips up and down the field. The offense would cautiously test match ups and took large amounts of time off the clock at the beginning of each set. Although Pittsford only took three shots in the first quarter, all three were on cage and Irondequoit senior goalie Eric Fischer stopped two. Irondequoit had more ball time and took nine shots in the opening quarter. Only three were on cage and Pittsford goalie Kyle Lake also stopped two. The third was a goal, scored by senior attackman Connor Enright with in interior feed from Jake Schmidt. Enright's goal, at 1:14, tied the game at 1-1 and there was no more scoring in the first quarter.
Pittsford took the score to 2-1 with a goal at 11:00 of the second quarter by Nino DiPasquale. Pittsford quickly moved the ball around the outside until junior midfielder Steven Ricci fed the ball to DiPasquale who took a couple of steps and wound up for the shot past Fisher into the goal. Irondequoit had two more shots on goal stopped by Lake before Gunnar Miller scored his unassisted goal at 1:40. Miller started behind the cage, drove a wide arc around the crease to the goalie's right and jumped in the air before shooting the ball past Lake to tie the game at 2-2. On the next Irondequoit possession senior middie Briele Caples scored an unassisted goal on a drive straight down the right side. The goal gave Irondequoit their first lead of the game with 0:42 left in the half.
There was lots of shooting, but only a little scoring in the third quarter. The Panthers took 11 shots, five of which were stopped by Fischer. Irondequoit managed four shots, all of which were on the cage and half of which were stopped by Lake. Irondequoit took a two goal lead with their first goal of the third quarter. Senior midfielder Brandon Costanzo drove from the goalie's left and bounced the ball over Lake's shoulder at 7:56.
On the ensuing face off the Panthers won on a technical foul and senior Tyler Aycock picked up the ball on the whistle. He then drove straight from the midfield and scored his unassisted goal at 7:42. The Eagles scored the last goal of the quarter at 7:34 to take a 5-3 lead. Nick Doktor threw the ball from behind the cage to Enright on the top left who fired the ball into the net. Although the Panthers had a couple more shots on goal, both were stopped by Fischer.
The final quarter started with the Panthers closing the gap at 8:36 with a goal by sophomore attackman Stephen Quinzi, assisted by senior attackman Jack Lauroesch who was back in the lineup after an injury. After a couple of Pittsford penalties, giving the Eagles a two man advantage, Irondequoit increased their lead with another goal by Doktor. Pittsford came back with a goal at 5:39 when Parke scored from medium range on an over the shoulder shot to close the gap to one goal. The Eagles did not wait long, as they scored on their next possession. With the sun starting to set into the eyes of Pittsford's goalie, Miller fed the ball to Schmidt out left front. Pittsford won the next face off and took a couple of shots. Fisher stopped one and quick-pitched the ball to a breaking Eagle midfielder, but Pittsford took the ball back and eventually scored with 0:23 left in the game. Quinzi found Albie DiPasquale for the goal. Pittsford won the face off and took the ball down passed the ball to Lauroesch who took a great shot which was masterfully saved by Fischer with 0:06 left in the game. Fischer ended the game with 9 saves. On the other end of the field, Lake made 8 saves for Pittsford.

-- In a relatively low scoring game, Fairport remained the only undefeated team in Section Five with a 5-2 win over Penn Yan. The Red Raiders scored the first five goals and held the Mustangs scoreless for 41:30. None of the first ten shots by Penn Yan resulted in goals; six saves and four missed shots. In addition to the saves made by goalie Blaze Riorden, the defense stepped up and often turned back shooters. Of note in the defense were defensemen Keith Mierzwa and Joe Arcarese. Between the two of them, they caused seven turnovers against the Mustangs. Riorden finished with eight saves for the Red Raiders.
Fairport's offense stalled a bit during the game. There were two factors at play in their low scoring. The first came from their difficulty in hitting the cage. Fairport finished with 41 shots and only 19 on cage (46%) compared to Penn Yan's 15 shots and 10 on cage (67%). Fairport's shots came from midfielders Pat VanBortle and Derek DeJoe who each finished with nine shots. Midfielder Jay Vakiener (5), Kyle Sterzin (4), Brian Martin (4) and Kevin Vaughn (4) also increased the total shots for Fairport. The second factor was Penn Yan goalie Brandon Maciejewski. He finished with 14 saves for the Mustangs (74%) and looked unbelievable between the pipes. He stepped into shots that he had no business saving and came out with save after save for Penn Yan.
Fairport's first goal was scored by DeJoe on his first shot of the game. He came down from substituting after the face off and took the ball straight to the cage. None of DeJoe's next eight shots found the back of the net. Seven minutes later and Fairport added their second goal. Kyle Sterzin looked to feed the inside crease, however, Penn Yan's crease defenseman checked down his cross. The ball continued on until it was grabbed from the air by Dan McAvoy. McAvoy finished into the back of the net with Maciejewski out of position. The first quarter ended with Fairport leading 2-0.
In the second quarter, McAvoy found VanBortle open on the crease for the first of his three goals. VanBortle scored the last three goals for the Red Raiders. In the third quarter he scored off an assist from Martin. In the fourth quarter, he scored unassisted with a drive from the back left. He came up from behind the cage and beat his defenseman for the goal. With 7:46 remaining in the game, the Mustangs had yet to score. Their first goal came with 6:30 remaining on an unassisted drive from Nate Spoor. The final Penn Yan goal was scored as time expired when Bradley Voigt assisted Jordan Owen as he cut towards the crease.
