-- In another game that was exciting throughout, McQuaid Jesuit came back from 2-4 at the half to defeat Honeoye Falls-Lima 8-6 this afternoon. HF-L scored the only goal in the first quarter when senior attackman Jason Boike scored the first of his five goals in the game at 5:21.
Boike scored another unassisted goal at 10:30 to start the scoring in the second quarter. McQuaid's junior midfielder Jake Merkel, who also scored five goals in the game, scored the next two goals. The first was assisted by Kacin Zuhlke and the second was assisted by senior Duncan Ayer. Boike added his third goal at 1:04 which was assisted by Peter Pluta. With one second on the clock, Boike scored one more to end the scoring for the half with the Cougars up 3-2.
McQuaid's Head Coach Dan James must have been inspiring during the break. Just twenty-one seconds into the third quarter senior middie Alex Paroda found junior Joe Hanna to close the gap to one goal. But Boike took just twenty-nine seconds to score his fifth straight goal for the Cougars. After nearly three minutes of transition, which was punctuated by excellent goalie saves by Pat Sheridan for McQuaid and Nick Beniamino for the Cougars, the Knights scored two more. Merkel scored both goals. The first was assisted by Paroda. When the third quarter ended the game was tied at 5-5, but the momentum was certainly with the Knights.
After chasing the ball up and down the field for nearly half of the fourth quarter, HF-L broke the tie when senior attackman Connor Flaherty scored with an assist from Chandler Clarke. On the next face off, however, Merkel, who handled the face off for the Knights picked up his own ground ball and fed the ball to Hanna to tie the game at 6-6. Merkel won 12 of sixteen face offs for McQuaid which was an important factor in McQuaid's win. With excitement high on the McQuaid side of the field, Merkel won the next face off and scored an unassisted, go-ahead goal just twenty-one seconds later. Although the Cougars had a couple of offensive sets in the last few minutes of the game, their shots were off cage or stopped by Sheridan. After a tripping penalty was called against the Cougars, Zuhlke scored the final goal of the game with an assist by Merkel at 1:38.

-- Junior midfielder Billy Lombardi had a great day at the center of the field, winning 11 of 12 (86%) and adding 1g-1a to help Aquinas defeat the Red Raiders 9-6 in a close game at Pal-Mac High School. Pal-Mac, down a couple of starters due to injury, scored the first two goals of the game. Mike Marvin scored at 8:06 on a feed from Doug Ellsworth. A minute later Kyle Ludwig scored on a pass from Ben Reeves. AQ came back and scored the next three goals to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Lombardi scored the first on a drive from the front. Sophomore attackman Alex Bianchi scored the first two of his six goals in the game.
Aquinas scored first in the second quarter when Bianchi found sophomore attackman Jonathan Olbrich open at 9:16. The Red Raiders returned with two goals by Ludwig, assisted by Reeves and Bianchi. The half ended with Aquinas up 5-3.
Aquinas scored two unanswered goals in the third quarter. The first was by Bianchi and the second was by Jake Vogl. Both were unassisted. The L' ll Irish were in the lead, 7-3 after three quarters.
Pal-Mac would not give up and had a strong come back in the fourth quarter, which made for an exciting finish. Aquinas' Bianchi scored first, assisted by Pete DiLaura, but Pal-Mac responded with three in a row. Senior middie Doug Ellsworth scored an unassisted man up goal at 7:02. Reeves scored an unassisted goal at 5:05 and then assisted on a goal by Sean Nolan at 1:41. The Red Raiders had the momentum, but their defense had to be determined in order to offset face off wins by Lombardi and get the ball to their offensive end. After a key save by senior Goalie Erich Wischmeyer, AQ took the ball behind the Pal-Mac net. Although the Aquinas coaching staff was pleading with the players to control the ball, Bianchi could not resist the feed by Lombardi and AQ posted the final goal of the game at 0:52.
