Saturday: Fairport over JD in last Seconds

In one of the six intersectional games today, Fairport scored the winning goal in the last few seconds of the game to defeat Jamesville-DeWitt 11-10 at Hobart College. Pittsford hosted Section VI powerhouse, Orchard Park and came away with a 15-6. Penn Yan won a big game against Victor with a score of 10-6. The other winners were Waterloo, Pal-Mac, Geneva, Livonia, Lancaster, Aquinas, Eastridge, Penfield, McQuaid, HF-L, Hilton and Gananda.

  --  Fairport fought back from an 8-2 deficit to defeat Jamesville-Dewitt (Section III) 11-10. The Red Raiders looked to be out of the game with 4:09 remaining in the opening half before they kicked into Fairport vs OPhigh gear by adding two at the end of the second quarter and scoring five more in the third quarter. All told, the Red Raiders held the Red Rams scoreless for 20 minutes of game time.

Fairport took first blood with 6:38 remaining in the opening quarter, with a drive from behind the cage by Brian Martin. Martin finished the game with three goals for Fairport from of nine shots. J-D scored the next two goals to take their first lead of the game. The first goal was scored by Griffin Fiener after a feed to the inside crease by McLaren Brady. Brady finished the game with 2g-2a for the Red Rams. Three minutes later and Brady assisted another goal. This time it was scored during a fast-break by Michael Engstrom. The Red Raiders had some difficultly with JD's clears and rides and many goals were scored during unsettled situations. The first quarter ended with J-D leading 2-1.

Fairport tied the game once again with a goal from Kyle Sterzin. Sterzin scored from the crease after a feed from Pat VanBortle with 9:28 remaining in the second quarter. VanBortle finished with 3g-1a for the Red Raiders. Over the Fairport vs OPspan of the next five minutes, J-D added six goals. Their first came after three players cut towards the crease and Deke Burns found Jordan Evans open. The next five goals were all unassisted goals with Lucas Johnson, Jordan Evans, Fiener (with two) and Burns adding goals. J-D held their largest lead of the game with 4:09 remaining in the first half. Fairport added two more goals to keep the game closer going into halftime. Martin added his second and VanBortle added his first. Both were scored on cross-crease passes. J-D led 8-4 after two quarters.

In the halftime huddle, Coach Mike Torrelli got his team back on track and the Red Raiders came out ready to win. They scored only 0:56 into the quarter with an inside feed from Derek DeJoe to VanBortle. Fairport kept scoring, adding four more goals before the quarter expired and held the Red Rams scoreless. In total, J-D took 7 shots in the quarter and Fairport goalie Blaze Riorden finished with four saves. Overall, Riorden finished with 10 saves (50%). With 5:47 remaining, Jay Vakiener Fairport vs OPscored the first of his three goals. He drove to the cage and when he looked to be turned back by his defensemen, he stepped inside his guard and finished into the back of the net. After three quarters, Fairport had caught up and then took the lead 9-8.

In the fourth quarter, Fairport added the first goal to increase their lead to two goals. DeJoe fought his way through most of the J-D team and came out with the ball in the back of the net. Eight seconds later J-D scored from a face off fast break. Brady scored his first goal of the night off an assist from Burns. Six minutes later and the Red Rams tied the score. Fairport was called for failure to advance on one of their clears and J-D started on their offensive side. Jordan Evans droves straight for the cage and after a Fairport defenseman slid to him, Brady was wide open for the goal. The score was tied with just over two minutes remaining in the game.

Fairport won the face off , but they did not hold the ball for long. Thirty seconds later J-D goalie Joe Shapiro came up with a big save to give J-D the ball back. Shapiro finished with 10 saves for the Red Rams. J-D brought the ball up field, but could not get a shot off before Fairport's Joe Arcarese took the ball away. Fairport cleared the ball with 0:48 remaining. Coach Torrelli called a time out and set up his offense. The ball moved around and with 0:13 Fairport vs OPremaining, Vakiener drove three steps to the cage and finished in the back of the net. J-D, who had been winning face offs most of the day, was not out of it yet. However, Fairport's Shane Sickles came up with a big face off win and Fairport got the ball back. Before Fairport could take the ball behind the net and sit on it, they threw it out of bounds. J-D had one more chance with 0:08 remaining. They tried to clear the ball up, but failed.

Jeff Edwards finished 8/16 at the face off draw for the Red Rams. He also finished with a team leading six ground balls. Evans finished with four ground balls for J-D. For Fairport, Kevin Vaughn finished 8/10 at the draw. Stickles and goalie Riorden both led with four ground balls for Fairport. Pete Gropp played one minute between the pipes for Fairport during a minor penalty on Riorden. He did not face a shot during his time in cage.

  --  On the last Saturday of games in April, Victor entered Mustang Field to take on the undefeated Mustangs. Penn Yan kept their undefeated season intact with a 10-6 win over the Blue Devils. The Mustangs controlled the opening face off and kept possession for the first couple of minutes. The game's first goal was scored at 9:37 when Dylan Yonts found Rion Davison near the crease. Just 33 seconds later, following a Dan Guererri face off win, Yonts ran hard down the left alley, dodged, and fired a shot that beat Victor goalie, Chris Saar. Victor cut the Mustang lead in half at 6:23 when senior midfielder, John Maloney, scored unassisted. Both teams played solid defense over the next five Victor at Penn Yanminutes until the Blue Devils were able to knot the score at two on an unassisted goal by Dale Mattice. Penn Yan scored twice late in the first quarter to boost the lead back to two.

The second quarter belonged to PY as the Mustang defense was able to hold the Blue Devils scoreless over the next twelve minutes, won 3 of 4 face offs, and scored three goals by Brett McMichael, Yonts, and 8th grader, Sean Emerson. Penn Yan led at the break 7-2.

The third quarter started out much like the previous two with PY controlling possessions and adding to their lead. At 11:31 senior midfielder, Jeremy Bunn, notched his first goal of the season on a feed from Davison. The Mustangs were up 8-2. That's when the tide changed a bit and Victor was able to gain some momentum. They cut the Mustang lead to 8-3 at 7:38 on Mattice's second unassisted goal of the game. He ran hard from up top and rifled a shot that beat PY net minder, Brandon Maciejewski. Victor scored another goal with just 0:03 remaining in the third when Maloney found senior attackman Mitch Rupp near the crease.

The Blue Devil's run continued into the fourth quarter as they cut the Penn Yan lead to 8-6 with 8:28 showing on the clock. Both goals were scored by Mattice, unassisted, as he dodged the right alley. Penn Yan stopped the run at 5:36 with a goal by Bradley Voigt, his second of the game, assisted by Davison. Ryan Maciejewski rounded out the Mustang scoring when he fired a shot into the back of the net on an assist from Voigt. In the cage for Penn Yan, Brandon Maciejewski finished with seven saves.   --  Although the game started close, Pittsford outscored Orchard Park 8-2 in the second half to winOP at Pittsford 15-6. The Panthers scored the first two goals of the game and never trailed in their victory. The opening goal was scored by Corey Parke ( 2g-2a). The second goal was scored two minutes later by Steven Ricci, who finished with 1g-1a for the Panthers. Orchard Park scored one goal in the first quarter.

In the second quarter the teams traded goals back and forth until Nino DiPasquale broke the pattern with an unassisted goal with 3:39 remaining in the opening half. Pittsford led 7-4 at halftime. In the third quarter they scored the first three goals with scoring from Parke, Stephen Quinzi and Albie DiPasquale. Their fourth goal of the third quarter was scored with 0:01 remaining by Ben Overslaugh. In the fourth quarter, junior Danny Page scored his first goal of the season and the second of his Varsity career. He finished last season with only a single goal after being brought up for the Sectional tournament.

HF-L scored the opening two goals with unassisted goals from Jason Boike and Nick Weston. Eden came back in the next 1:14 to tie the score with two goals of their own. HF-L finished out the first quarter with two more goals to lead 4-2 after the first quarter. HF-L continued with five goals in the second quarter and four more goals in the third quarter before Eden scored again.

Leading the scoring pack for the Cougars was attackman Connor Flaherty with 5g-3a. Midfielder Ryan Kelly finished with 3g-2a and Nick Weston with 2g-3a.   --  Updated  McQuaid Jesuit defeated a talented team from St. Edward (Ohio) with a score of 8-6. The game, the second game for the Knights hosted by Cathedral Prep in Erie, PA this weekend.

After a slow start that saw McQuaid taking a one goal advantage in the first quarter, the Knights continued to score and led at the half 4-2. The McQuaid defensive unit that included Josh Swartzman, Luc Bailey, Pat Sheridan and Alex Paroda turned in strong performances and were able to shut off the top Eagles' offensive players to a single goal. The St. Edward Eagles feature several college recruits including midfielder Joe Gravino (Mercyhurst) and Brandon Sieniawski (Sacred Heart).
