--  In the first five games of the season, Aquinas led at halftime and won each game. Last week against Webster Thomas, Aquinas was tied at the half, but led after three quarters and pulled out the win. Tonight against Livonia, the Little Irish trailed 6-1 (initially trailing 5-0) going into halftime. The first time Aquinas faced the Bulldogs they won 13-4. Livonia came into this game ready for payback and caught the Little Irish off-guard. At the largest lead, the Bulldogs led 7-1 with 10:45 remaining in the third quarter. Although the final 22:45 saw Aquinas scoring five and holding the Bulldogs to only one it was not enough to secure the victory for the Little Irish.

Livonia's Cody Cisco scored the first two goals with assists from Josh Wester. Their two goals of the quarter were scored with 9:20 and 8:19 remaining. Livonia scored their goals on their first two shots on goal. The remaining eight Liv-AQshots of the first quarter all failed to hit the cage. Aquinas had less than half the shots of the Bulldogs, only taking four in the first quarter (two on cage). Livonia led 2-0 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Livonia kept up the heavy pressure. Wyatt Struble scored with an assist from Derek Bishopp. One minute later Wester scored his lone goal of the game. Struble added an assist with a pass to Cisco during a man-up situation. The Bulldogs were looking at a 5-0 lead with 6:35 remaining in the second quarter. Aquinas' first goal was scored on only their seventh shot of the game (third of three in the second quarter) with an unassisted goal from Joe Snook. Before the quarter expired, Livonia added another goal with Bishopp scoring on a drive from the top of the restraining line. Livonia led 6-1 at halftime.

The third quarter started with the second to last Livonia goal. Wester assisted Mitchell Kinney with 10:45 remaining in the quarter. Aquinas added three more goals in the quarter to try to chip away the lead. Each of the three goals was unassisted with Billy Lombardi, Snook and Jake Vogl scoring. Although the Little Irish added goals, their shots did not increase greatly. Once again, only four shots were taken in the entire quarter. Livonia led 7-4 after three quarters.

In the final quarter, Aquinas scored the first goal to bring the game within two goals. Vogl scored once again unassisted for the Little Irish. Only 0:39 later the Bulldogs scored again to keep the lead at three, with a second drive from Bishopp. The final goal of the game was scored at the 4:44 mark. Vogl assisted Jonathan Olbrich for the final Little Irish goal. Aquinas had three more tries at the cage after Olbrich's goal. Two shots hit the cage and the final shot of the game was a missed shot from Vogl.

A key to the success of the Bulldogs came in holding down the number of shots they allowed from Aquinas. AQ finished with an impressive 71% shots on cage and 35% of those shots resulting in goals. Livonia, on the other hand only had 44% on cage and 24% of those shots resulted in goals. The key difference was in the total number of shots where Livonia doubled Aquinas (34-17).

Livonia's Bishopp finished 10/16 (63%) at the face-off and added three ground balls to his teams tally. Defenseman Sean Kidder led in ground balls with eight. Nick Jonasse and Wester each added five ground balls for the Bulldogs. In the cage, Ethan Jamison finished with six saves. For Aquinas, Erich Wischmeyer finished with ten saves.

Aquinas, now 6-1, will host Fairport on Saturday. Livonia (3-2) will play at Marcus Whitman on Thursday.  return to top
