-- In what was probably the most exciting game of the day, Palmyra-Macedon used four unanswered goals to force a 7-7 tie at Rush Henrietta. The Royal Comets, however, won when junior midfielder Sean Tomkins scored an unassisted goal just twenty-one seconds into the first overtime period.
Pal-Mac senior attackman Kyle Ludwig scored the first of his three goals after cutting to the crease in the first two minutes of the game. He received a pass from sophomore attackman Jarett Duchesneau. R-H came back for the first tie with an unassisted goal by Nick Binnert. The junior midfielder scored four goals in the game to lead the offensive effort for the Royal Comets. Soft passes and the cold weather hurt the Pal-Mac clearing unit who had quite a few turnovers, giving R-H significant ball time. After sophomore Matt Hair broke up one P-M clear, he took the ball to the goal at 2:54 to give the Royal Comets a 3-2 lead. However, Pal-Mac came back with 0:23 left in the quarter when Sean Nolan swept the top of the box and found senior attackman Kyle Ludwig cutting to the crease. The teams were tied at 2-2 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was all Rush-Henrietta as they scored three unanswered goals. Senior midfielder Jackson Sadowski scored at 10:26 after receiving a cross-crease pass from junior attackman Joseph LaRocca. Binnert scored an unassisted goal at 6:46 after driving past his man from the right side goal-line extended. He scored another unassisted goal after picking up a loose ball on the crease to give the Royal Comets a 5-2 lead with 0:16 left in the half. R-H junior goalie McKenzie Spooner was dramatic in the first half, making numerous high-pressured saves. He made a few key saves at the end of the game as well, on his way to a 14s/8ga (67%) day.
Pal-Mac started the scoring in the third quarter when senior midfielder Doug Ellsworth found Ludwig cutting to the crease. The scoring play was a favorite for the Red Raiders. Although they failed to make the connection on a number of tries, the play produced several of their goals today and as the season progresses, it will bring them many more. R-H scored the last two goals of the quarter in less than a minute, starting with a broken clear followed by a goal by Matt Leonard assisted by Binnert. Binnert scored the last goal of the quarter with an outside bounce shot that stayed low on the think grass surface inside the crease. Rush-Henrietta led after three quarters with a score of 7-3.
The Red Raiders took firm control in the last quarter, scoring four unanswered goals over the course of the last 9:00 of regulation. Doug Ellsworth started a drive from the back right corner of the field and took it to the goal for the first Pal-Mac goal. He scored again at 7:23 after he took the ball from Spooner. Both players fell to the ground, and Ellsworth popped the ball just out of Spooner's reach. The ball went up and down the field many times before the 1:44 mark, when senior middie David Ellsworth scored on a medium range shot from the goalie's left. With large amount of tension on the field, and time running out, David Ellsworth made a desperate drive from the right. After pushing through the R-H defense, he scored with 0:29 left in regulation. A great last second save by Cody Rogers forced the game into overtime .
Rush-Henrietta, who won twelve of nineteen face offs, got possession of the ball at the start of the overtime period. After getting the ball at the top of the box, Tomkinson secured the win for the Royal Comets with 3:39 left on the clock.
-- Brighton took an early 3-1 lead, but Gates-Chili scored the final six goals to win the game 7-3. The Spartans had scoring from five different players with attackman Matt Martin (2g-1a) and midfielder Ralph Taliento (2g-1a) leading the charge.
Brighton opened the scoring only with 1:30 into play when Will Hunnerlach assisted Vinny Rockwell. Four minutes later Casey Kopp added a goal to give the Barons a 2-0 lead. With 2:14 remaining in the opening quarter, John Wise scored for the Spartans. Wise's goal was scored during man-up. Brighton led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter. Brighton added their final goal with 9:32 remaining in the second quarter with an unassisted man-up goal from Kopp. Three minutes later Martin added his first goal for the Spartans (unassisted). Brighton led 3-2 at halftime.
In the second half it was all Gates-Chili. Taliento scored two goals in the third quarter at 3:27 and 0:28. The latter goal was assisted by Martin. In the fourth quarter, two of the three goals were man-up. Martin scored his second (assisted by Taliento) during man-up at 8:02. Phil Ruf scored (assisted by Wise) at 6:40. Ruf then added his second goal with only 0:28 remaining during another man-up situation. Ruf's second goal was assisted by London Booker.
Gates-Chili converted on 3/8 for man-up. Brighton's Rockwell dominated at the face-off, winning 9/10. As a team, Brighton finished at 85% (11/13). In the cage for Gates-Chili, Tyler Jacobson finished with 18 saves (86%). For Brighton, Tom Hilling finished with eight saves (53%).
