Saturday: Penfield Survives Close Call |
May 8, 2004 - Canandaigua and Penfield remained undefeated in Section Five and are among only seven teams statewide to have perfect records. Penfield had a close call with a comeback win against host Fairport, 9-8, and Canandaigua had no trouble in their 19-7 victory over Newark. Livonia had an overtime win against McQuaid Jesuit as they won 5-4.
It looked like Fairport would be the first team to beat Penfield in 2004 as the Red Raiders scored the first four goals of the game and led 4-0 at the 1:00 mark of the first quarter. Penfield, however made their position clear as they scored their first goal at the 0:30 mark and then followed it with another with just 0:04 left in the first quarter.
Senior middie, Bill Durdel scored the first two goals with assists on each by Tom Rynn. Sophomore middie, Ryan Lowe scored the other first quarter goal for Fairport. Junior attackman, Tim Pfeffer picked up a loose ball from a shot and dumped it in the goal to scored Penfield's first goal. He scored again, 26 seconds later on a feed from junior middie, Mike Thon. The quarter ended with the Red Raiders up 4-2.
Fairport scored the first goal in the second quarter as Lowe scored (unassisted) at the 10:46 mark, but the Patriots took the second quarter with two goals by AJ Civalier (with assists by Kelly McKenna and Pfeffer) and one goal by senior attackman, Kevin McGuigan at the 0:30 mark. Fairport's sophomore goalie, Geoff Mayor made 3 big point blank saves and the half ended in a 5-5 tie.
For the third time, Fairport started the quarter with a bang with the go-ahead goal at 10:22 by Pat VanHall (from Pete Gibbons). There were no goals for the next seven minutes until sophomore attackman, Pat Reilly scored on a feed from VanHall and the Raiders were ahead by two. Penfield's single goal of the quarter came at 1:03 when junior attackman, Trevor Rice scored after Ryan O'Donnell scooped up a loose ball from a pipe shot and completed the feed. A penalty was called late in the quarter and Penfield held on to the ball.
Penfield started the last quarter with the ball and the game was controlled by the defense and the goalie play of Geoff Mayor and the Patriot's sophomore goalie, Brian Dell (16s) who each made big saves. Riding by both teams was powerful and clearing the ball was difficult at both ends of the field as individual players worked to get the ball for their team.
Civalier scored the first goal of the quarter at 7:56 (unassisted) to tie the game at 7-7. Trevor Rice scored his second goal (unassisted) at 4:57 to give the Patriots their first lead in the game.
