Thursday: Two Left Undefeated |
May 6, 2004 - Canandaigua and Penfield remained undefeated in Section Five and are among only seven teams statewide to have perfect records. Canandaigua beat Victor 11-3 and Penfield broke a 6-6 half-time tie with five third quarter goals to beat Webster Schroeder, 13-7.
The first half looked like the makings of a close game, but Irondequoit held Fairport to one goal in the second half and produced 8 of there own to take the game, 10-3 at Fairport.
Nine different Irondequoit players contributed to the win, led by senior middie, Craig Lepiane and senior attackman, Jon Timkey with 3g each and junior Zack Pixley who scored 1g-3a. Junior midfielder, Sean Doyle and sophomore, Derek Pino each added 2g while Jim Mikel scored 1g and Cory Bottiglier added an assist. The last goal of the game was scored by senior, Alex Series on an assist from junior, Chase Dominick.
Fairport's goals were scored by Pat VanHall (unassisted), Tom Rynn (unassisted), and Nik Bryan on an assist from VanHall. The game was marred by 17 penalties and the ejection of one spectator by the officials. Irondequoit's record moves to 8-3 while the Red Raiders drop to 6-6.
Penfield remained undefeated with a home game, 17-7 win over Webster Schroeder after a pulling away from a 6-6 tie at the half-time break. Sophomore midfielder, Kelly McKenna led the effort with 3g-1a and senior middie, AJ Civalier scored 3g. Ryan O'Donnell and Tim Pfeffer each added 2g while Kevin McGuigan and Mike Thon added 1g-2a each. Senior middie, Dennis Bell had 1g-1a and Trevor Rice and Mike Arvan each added an assist for the Patriots. Goalies, Brian Dell (12s), Shawn Sullivan (1s) and Adam Mutch, split time in the goal for Penfield (12-0).
Junior offensiveman, Jack Mooney scored 2g for Schroeder (7-5). [No report from Schroeder.]
Honeoye Falls-Lima improved its record to 9-3 with a 10-5
win over Webster Thomas who led at the half 3-2. An electrical storm postponed a portion of the game for about an hour, after which the Cougars came alive.
Senior middie, Erich Dehm (2g-2a), sophomore attackman, Eric Holton (2g-1a) and junior attackman, Mike Cintineo (2g) led the scoring for HFL while Jeff Price, Dan Layfield, John Cintineo and David Uzialko each added a goal. Junior goalie, Mike Brisbane recorded 18 saves for the Cougars.
Webster Thomas saw goalies from sophomore attackman, Kevin Kemp (2g) while John Schumacher, Nick Dalton and Steve Hutton each added 1g. Mark Shubber and Dom Scalzo recorded 1a each for the Titans. Senior goalie, John Concordia "...played an outstanding game," according to HFL Head Coach Rick Pound. Concordia recorded 27 saves for Thomas (8-5). [No report from Thomas.]
Canandaigua remained undefeated at 13-0 with an 11-3 win over host Victor behind very balanced scoring that put ten different players in the book. Junior attackman, Aaron Manzer led the effort with 2g-1a while Brian Hadsell and Mike Pane each added 1g-1a. Chris Mulheron, Dan Groot, Ben Stanley, Nick Boylan, Tyler Emery, Chad Buck and Stephen Smith each scored one goal for the Braves.
Senior attackmen, Chris Potter (2g) and Mike Burns (1g) scored for Victor. Senior middie, Ben Cerza added an assist, and senior goalie Andy Bowerman recorded 20 saves for the Blue Devils (6-6).
Aquinas was the GRALL winner in their game with Livonia, held at St. John Fisher College, 14-12 as Steve DeFreze led the effort with 4g-4a.
Livonia scored first, just 25 seconds into the game as Josh Hendrickson scored on an assist by Pat Wahl. Aaron Young scored another Bulldog goal, just 14 seconds later with an assist from Chadd Britton who won the first three faceoffs of the game (and combined with Cahill Walsh to win 20/24 in the game). Aquinas came back to tie at two with goals by Connor Burgasser and Steve DeFreze and then scored the go-ahead goal by Aaron Young from Ryan Rossborough. The first quarter ended 4-3 Aquinas.
The Little Irish expanded their lead with 3 more goals in the second and took a 7-3 lead at the half-time break.
The third quarter was more even. Goals by Britton, Shawn Wright, and Hendrickson kept the bulldogs within striking distance, but Aquinas still held a 11-6 lead at the end of the quarter.
Livonia came back hard the final quarter, scoring 6g to 2g to bring the Bulldogs within one at the 3:44 mark. Aquinas scored in manup to end the game 14-12.
Scoring for Aquinas were Steve DeFreze 4g-4a), David Schmandt (3g), Connor Burgasser (2g-1a) and Mark Pincelli (2g-1a). Aquinas goalie, Jeff Walker had an outstanding outing, making many point blank saves for the Little Irish (7-3).
Scoring for Livonia were Aaron Young (5g), Pat Wahl (1g-4a), Chadd Britton (2g-1a) and Josh Hendrickson (2g). Tom Every and Shawn Wright added (1g-1a) while Ryan Rossborough added 2a. Kevin Thomas and Scott Mosher each had one assist for Livonia (6-6).Bulldog goalies, Jake Auburn (8s) and Aaron Jamison (3s) combined for 11s in the cage. [No report from Aquinas.]
Penn Yan added another win to its tally as the beat Geneva. 11-5 behind scores by junior attackman, John Van Houten (5g-1a) and sophomore middie, Dan Mesler (3g-1a). The Mustangs overcame a 4-4 half-time tie as freshman goalie, RJ Wickham recorded 29 saves for Penn Yan (10-3).
Senior midfielder, Dan Rago scored two goals for Geneva (5-6). [No report from Geneva.]
It was a come from behind win for host Bath-Haverling as they beat McQuaid Jesuit in GRALL action, 9-8. Bath was down 8-6 with 2:16 left in the game when Liam Glover (2g-3a) scored. The tying goal came from Ritchie Zajac (3g- 1a) who drove to the goal from behind with 1:16 left in the game. The game winner came from Ryan Finney with 0:26 left in the game.
Also scoring for Bath was Jeremy Sutfin with 2g .Goalie Dusty Smith (14 s) had 2 one-on-one saves late in the game for the Rams (4-9).
The Knights saw scoring from junior attackman, Scott Rubino (2g), sophomore offensiveman, Marty Farchione (2g) and junior middie, Ryan Ingalls (2g). Brandon McKay (1g-1a), Matt Evans (1g-1a) and Dan Sturnick (1a) rounded out scoring for the Knights. Senior goalies, David Yahoodik(4s) and Al Ashcraft (7s) minded the nets for McQuaid Jesuit (3-9).
Brighton edged out host Eastridge, 14-7 as junior attackman, Mike Ryerson scored 4g-1a and senior midfielder, Spencer Durland added 3g-2a for the Barons. James Ryan (1g-4a) and Zach Davis(2g-1a) also led the effort for Brighton (6-6).
Junior Middie, Kevin Kimber scored 4g for Eastridge (1-11). [No report from Eastridge.]
Mynderse Academy used eight different players in the scorebook to beat Palmyra-Macedon in a close 7-6 match at Pal-Mac. Mike Kurdziolek (2g-2a) and Mike Lambert (2g) led the pack for Mynderse. Chris Warrick, Kevin McCully, and Tim Ellis each scored a goal while Brian DeMillo (2a), Andy Zaverella and Sean McGrimley each added and assist for the Mynderse whose goalie, Anthony Carnevale recorded 8 saves for the Blue Devils (6-7).
Pal-Mac's junior middie, Dave Bennett and junior attackman, Jaimie Sinopoli each scored 2g and and junior attackman, Matt Christ added 2a for Pal-Mac. Jeremy Reeves scored a goal while Owen Campbell and Jason Oaks each added an assist for the Raiders. Junior faceoff middie, Jason Oaks won 11/18 in the game. Junior, Matt Beck played outstanding defense and junior goalie, Ben Dlugosh had 10s for Pal-Mac (2-10).
