Thursday: Penfield and CA Undefeated Still |
May 13, 2004 - With only a couple of games left in the regular season, Penfield and Canandaigua won their games today and are among 4 or 5 such teams statewide.
It was a most unusual day at Irondequoit, as the undefeated Penfield Patriots held the Eagles to two goals in the first quarter and shut them down for the remaining thirty-seven minutes to win 9-2.
Irondequoit scored first as senior attackman, Jon Timkey scored with and assist from junior, Dan Nielsen. The quarter was quiet until Penfield's senior middie, AJ Civalier scored (unassisted) at 1:29. Irondequoit came right back on the next faceoff and scored what would be their last goal at 1:03 in the first as Timkey inter-cepted a clearing pass and took it to the goal. The quarter ended with Irondequoit up 2-1.
Penfield scored four goals in the second quarter as Dennis Bell and Tim Pfeffer (from Mike Thon) scored 6-on-6 and Civalier (from Kelly McKenna) and Pfeffer (from Kevin McGuigan) scored in man up. The half ended with Patriots up 5-2.
In the third quarter the Patriots scored four more. McKenna scored two in manup (one, assisted by Pfeffer) and Trevor Rice (from Pfeffer) and Jason Knerr from McKenna) score the other two goals.
Penfield sophomore goalie, Brian Dell (20s) made at least nine dramatic saves throughout the second half in order to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. Penfield moves to 15-0 and Irondequoit drops to 10-4.
It was a great game as host Webster Thomas beat cross-bay rivals Eastridge 14-11. Eastridge scored first, in the first minute of the game, on a goal by junior middie Kevin Kimber who ended the game with 7 goals. Thomas scored three straight goals; one unassisted by Kevin Kemp and two by Steve Hutton. Eastridge scored the final goal of the first quarter on an unassisted goal by Matt Recino.
Thomas pulled away in the second quarter with goals by Hutton, senior midfielder Billy Walzcak and sophomore Andy Episcapo and took a 7-3 lead. The Lancers fought back scoring a goal in transition and followed that with a goal from senior attackmen Dan Driffill (3g), back from a season long injury. Thomas ended the half up 7-5.
The Titans scored first in the third quarter with a goal by Kemp (2g-4a) and an assist from John Schumacher. Eastridge's Kimber answered again with a great dodge and shot from up top to put the Lancers back within two. Webster's Schumacher then scored one of his own with an assist from Jeff Casper to stretch Webster's lead back to three. Again Eastridge answered with another goal from Kimber. At the end of the third the score was Thomas 11 Eastridge 8.
Thomas had 56 shots to Eastridge's 18. Titan defenseman, Tyler VanCura led his team's ground ball race with 15 and junior goalie, Mike Matteo was outstanding in goal for Eastridge (2-13). Thomas ends its regular season play at 10-6.
Host Honeoye Falls-Lima improved their record to 11-3 with a 13-3 win over Hilton as they say 11 assisted goals. Mike Cintineo led the Cougar effort with 4g-2a. Jeff Price scored 2g-3a and Eric Holton added 2g while Dan Layfield recorded 2a. Five players added a goal for HFL including, Erich Dehm (1g-2a),
John Cintineo (1g-1a), David Uzialko (1g-1a), Chris Stanton and Zane Witzel Junior goalie, Mike Brisbane recorded 13 saves for the Cougars.
Hilton saw scoring from senior middie, Tyler Endres (1g-2a), senior attack-man, Ryan Eastman (1a) and 8th grader, Mitch Ritchie (2g). Junior goalie, Dom Collichio had 16 saves for Hilton (4-11).
Aquinas won the first Greater Rochester Area Lacrosse League championship by beating host Livonia 10-9. A thunder storm delayed the start of the game until 6:15 PM but the fans that stayed were treated to a great high school lacrosse game.
The Little Irish struck first on an unassisted goal by middie Pat Eyre. The Bulldogs came right back scoring the next three goals to take a 3-1 lead. Two goals scored by Ryan Rossborough goals sandwiched one by Chadd Britton. Aquinas evened the score by the end of the first quarter on goals by Bobby DeFreeze and JP Gorman.
Aquinas scored 5 goals to Livonia's 2 in the second quarter to take an 8-5 lead into the half. Pat Wahl and Shawn Wright scored goals for Livonia to keep the game close.
Livonia came back in the second half, led by senior goal keeper Jake Auburn (16s) and the Livonia defense that held Aquinas to just 2 goals in the second half. Defenders Shane Moran, Ray Miles, And Sam Pecorella dug their heels in after losing senior co-captain defenseman Kevin Thomas to an injury in the first half. "Sam Pecorella did an outstanding job in Kevin's place in the second half," stated coach Sciera. Junior middie Josh Hendrickson stepped up in the second half to lead Livonia's offense scoring three goals to bring Livonia within one goal in the 4th quarter at 8-9, and again at 10-9.
"Our problem was we couldn't get anything by AQ's goal keeper Jeff Walker, he really played an outstanding game," said Coach Sciera. Livonia had several quality shots on goal in unsettled and in man up situations, and Walker just stoned the bulldogs every time.
David Schmandt finished with 2g-1a, and John Contestabile scored 2g for the Little Irish (9-5). [No report from Aquinas.]
It was Brighton over Odyssey as the Barons used nine different players, led by senior attackman, Zach Davis with 5g-2a. Junior attackman, James Ryan added 3g-4a and junior attackman, Mike Ryerson added 2g-3a. Senior middie, Spencer Durland finished with 3g for Brighton (8-7).
Odyssey (0-15) had 2g-1a from junior attackman, Joe Hallow and 1g-1a from junior middie, Mike Kemp. [No report from Odyssey.]
Canandaigua remained undefeated at 15-0 and clinched the Division 1 Championship with a 13-7 win over host Geneva. Junior attackman, Chris Mulheron (2g-3a) and senior middies, Mike Pane (3g) and Bob Bush (3g) led the effort. Steve Smith and Dan Groot each added 2g-1a while Aaron Manzer had 1g and Brian Hadsell added 1a. Playing well on defense for Canandaigua was Brian McWilliams, Grady Moore, Mike Serron, Ryan Cunningham and Jay Woodworth. Sophomore goalie, Dan Serafine made 12 saves.
Geneva's scoring came from senior middie, Dan Rago (3g), Luke Bonney (1g-2a) and Matt Warner (2-a). Matt Marabito, Greg Bonney and Mark Bloom each scored a goal for the Panthers (7-8).
Senior attackman, Nik Bryan scored the game winning goal with 0:08 left in left in the second overtime to give Fairport the win over Pittsford 14-13. Bryan finished the game with 5g while Pat Reilly and Pat Van Hall each added 3g-2a. Ryan Lowe scored 2g-1a and Mike Danylyshyn added 1g-1a. Pete Gibbons added 2a and Kevin Lux registered 1a for Fairport. Gibbons won 11/17 and Jeff Sanna won 4/6 faceoffs for the Red Raiders (8-7).
Pittsford's senior midfielder, RJ Lamontagne, who scored the tying goal, led the Panther effort with 2g-3a and junior attackman, Justin Rand (2g), Jake Boyce (3g-1a) and Dylan Bittlingmaier (2g-1a) made the scorebook for Pittsford (8-6). [No report from Pittsford.]
Host Webster Schroeder was the winner with a 13-7 victory over Rush-Henrietta as sophomore middie, Jay Willmes scored 3g-2a and junior middie, Mike Catalino added 2g-1a for the Warriors (8-7).
Senior middie, Joe Malach scored g3 for R-H (2-13). [No report from Schroeder, score only from R-H.]
Penn Yan beat host Newark, 18-6 as senior attackman, Kyle Eakins scored 5g-2a and junior attackman, Jon Van Houten added 3g-4a. Dan McGuffie (3-1), Dan Mesler (2-3) and Steve Carlsen (2-1) added to the Mustang score. Brandan Hamm scored 1g-2a and Benn Odell added 1g-1a while Jason Braman scored a goal for Penn Yan. Freshman goalie, RJ Wickham and senior goalie, Adam Bacher combined for 7 saves for the Mustangs (11-4).
Jason Johnson, Mychal Wilkes (2g-1a) and Nate Colon each scored 2g for Newark. Hector Alejandro recorded 2a for the Reds (4-10).
Waterloo was the winner in their game with host Mynderse Academy with a score of 8-6. Waterloo led at the half 4-3 and at the start of the last quarter, 6-5. Senior offensiveman, Mike Strohm had 8a and David Osborne scored 4g while junior goalie, Pat DeBolt recorded 9 saves for Waterloo (12-3).
Tim Ellis and Chris Warrick scored 2g each for Mynderse (7-8). [No
