 Certainly the tie breaking goal by senior middie, Clay Rice at the 4:16 mark of the last quarter was important to Penfield's win over Irondequoit, but this win was as much the result of defensive players as the players who scored the goals.
Sophomore goalie, Brian Dell (15 saves) of Penfield and senior goalie, Bill  Buttaro (11 saves) of Irondequoit made exciting and "game deciding" saves throughout the game. The defensive players for both teams kept their respective teams ahead as each team took turns in control of the game. In the end, it was the goal by Rice that gave Penfield the 8-7 victory at home on "senior Day" in Penfield.
It was very much a defensive game as it took the Patriots eight minutes to score the first goal of the game when senior attackman, Ryan O'Donnell scored on a feed by junior attackman, Tim Pfeffer. The first quarter ended with Penfield up 1-0.
Irondequoit was fired up in the second and scored the next two goals, both by senior middie, Craig Lepiane who scored the first with an assist from senior attackman, Jon Timkey at the 10:59 mark. His second was scored after breaking through a double-team to score an unassisted goal with 3:29 left in  the second. Although the "tide had turned", Penfield would not let up and scored two of their own in the last two minutes of the half. Pfeffer scored the first on a feed from senior middie, Adam Civalier. One minute and ten econds later, junior middie, Mike Thon scored the last goal of the half with an assist by sophomore middie, Mike Arvan. The half ended with Penfield up, 3-2.
The third quarter belonged to Irondequoit, who took control of faceoffs, consistantly beat the Penfield clears, and picked up critical ground balls. At 8:34, sopho-more attackman, Derek Pino scored a tying goals (assisted by Timkey). Twenty-eight seconds later, Timkey scored one of his own with an assist by senior attackman, Jim Mikel. Goalies at both ends made significant saves, and defensemen controlled their offensive matchups.
Timkey scored the next goal at 1:17 after picking up the ball that bounced off Penfield goalie, Brian Dell. The Patriots made a statement of their own when Civalier scored the last goal of the quarter with an assist by junior attackman, Trevor Rice. The quarter ended with Irondequoit up, 5-4.
Control of the game changed again, immediately at the start of the last quarter, when Penfield saw two goals by Thon; the first of which was scored in man-up just 0:21 seconds into the period. His second was scored just 0:31 seconds later on a feed from sophomore middie, Kelly McKenna. Fourteen seconds later, Trevor Rice scored with a feed from Civalier. At that point Penfield was ahead, 7-5, but it didn't last long as the Eagles came back at 9:33 with another Timkey goal, this time assisted by freshman, Nick Kane.
 Penfield started clearing the ball and broke up a couple of clears by the Eagles. They gained control of key ground balls and settled the ball well. Almost five minutes passed until the next goal. Irondequoit's Cory Bottiglier hit the very upper right corner of the net to tie the game at 7 with 4:37 left in the last quarter.
The tie didn’t last long as Clay Rice only waited 0:21 to scored what would become the winner goal, with a big assist by O'Donnell at 4:16. Penfield successfully held control of the ball for the remainder of the game, even in the face of excellent "double team" defense by Irondequoit.
Thon ended the game with 3 goals and won 5 out of 8 face offs. Civalier had 1 goal and 2 assists and won 8 out of 9 face offs for Penfield (7-0).
Lepiane and Mikel (1a) each finished with 2 goals for Irondequoit (4-3). |
