Thomas 14 - McQuaid Jesuit 9
For
both Thomas and McQuaid Jesuit this year, runs, a series of goals in a row, have been
important in games they have won. This afternoon, when they both met, it was
important again as Thomas scored five goals in a row to take a 13-7 lead on
their way to a 14-9 win over McQuaid Jesuit in Class A quarter final play.
The game was close for the majority of the game, with 4-4, 6-6, and 9-7 quarters.
McQuaid Jesuit scored the first two goals, starting with one at 10:54 and the second
47 seconds later. Senior middie Nick Caton scored the first on an unassisted
drive from the top left side. After the face off was won by Thomas, Nick Scalzo
put one in the cage, but it was waved off when the officials said he entered
the crease before the score. Corey Flanigan scored for the Knights on a sweep
to the right.
The next three goals were by Thomas starting with a man up goal
by freshman attackman Kyle Rothfuss with an assist from senior attackman Max
Gurowski. The shot bounced right under McQuaid Jesuit goalie, Danny Caufield's stick.
At 5:57 after clearing the ball, Gurowski circled the cage just past the goal
line extended, turned back sharply and passed the ball to Scalzo on the opposite
corner. Gurowski assisted on the next goal, when he moved the ball from behind
the net to Pat Morrill in front.
With the score 3-2, McQuaid Jesuit tied the game on an unassisted goal by Mitch Ritchie,
after his defender was picked off behind the goal. Ritchie worked his way to
the top of the crease and scored with an underhand shot. At 1:55 McQuaid Jesuit took
the lead with a wing feed from Eric Wright to Nick Wolak. Thirty seconds later
Thomas ended the scoring in the first quarter and tied it back up at 4-4 with
a Gurowski feed to Brad Hutton. Gurowski assisted on all four Titan goals and
the quarter ended with a 4-4 tie.
Thomas started man up for three minutes when McQuaid Jesuit was assessed a 3:00 non-releasable
stick penalty at the start of the quarter. Although the Titans were not able
to score on that penalty, the did score on two others, as the Knights were
hit with five and a half minutes of penalties in the second quarter. Kyle LaVallee
scored after cutting inside the man down zone and catching the ball thrown
by Jack Hinderland from behind the cage. Later, Scalzo scored in man up, throwing
a hard side arm shot after receiving the ball from Brad Hutton. McQuaid Jesuit closed
the half with two goals in about a minute, the first of which was scored unassisted
by Nick Caton with a strong sidearm to the top right corner of the cage. The
second was scored by Ritchie who backed in from the corner of the cage and
the half ended in a 6-6 tie.
Just 47 second into the third quarter Thomas scored the go ahead goal when
Hinderland scored an unassisted goal on a sweep to the left. After a great
deal of transition Thomas scored another goal when JT Hauck scored on a sweep
at 4:36. The Knights came back with a goal at 4:09 as Ritchie backed into the
goal and dished the ball to Jeff MacDonald for the goal. The Titans saw a goal
from Scalzo when he was able to sneak to the corner of the cage and one hand
it past Caufield to give Thomas a 9-7 lead at the end of three quarters.
The Titans took control at the top of the fourth quarter scoring four goals
in just under six minutes. After passing the ball around the goal numerous
times, LaVallee scored the first (unassisted) after dodging inside and putting
a shot the top right corner. Billy Gurowski sent the ball to Morrill who cut
in parallel and finished with a quick stick shot. A minute and a half later
Scalzo moved the ball to Hauck who scored on an open net when the Knights
cleared the cage to double the ball. Scalzo, who had a shot, instead passed
the ball to Hauck who had a better shot. Scalzo got his goal at 3:15 when he
received the ball from Tomeno on a fast break clear. After a McQuaid Jesuit time out,
Corey Flanigan scored an unassisted goal at 3:00 on a clear out play. Scalzo
scored a man up goal for Thomas at 1:40 after receiving a cross crease feed
from LaVallee. With under a minute left, Ritchie scored the last goal of the
game after muscling in from a tight crease cut from behind the cage.
One key in the game was the excellent play by senior defenseman Jake Ziegler
who for most of the game drew the assignment to guard Ritchie who before the
game was second in Section Five scoring (with 68) and points (with 95). Ziegler
had several important take aways and was able to keep Ritchie from dominating
in the game. Although the high powered attackman did score 3g-1a (4 pts) which
is just under his average 5.2, Ziegler and Andrew Glagolev (who took over the
assignment for part of the third quarter) did a fine job in keeping him from
playing "his game".
