Canandaigua 11 - Orchard Park 9

redspot Canandaigua played three strong quarters and held off a late Quaker offensive to defeat Orchard Park 11-9. For the first three quarters the score did not adequately represent the Braves' dominance. Canandaigua led 3-1 after the first and 5-1 at the half. The lone Quakers goal was scored in ca-opthe first quarter on a fast-break less than two minutes into the game.

Canandaigua scored 0:15 into the game when Marshall Johnson picked up his own groundball during the face-off and passed the ball to Justin Tomzak. Tomzak dominated the first half with three of the five goals (as well as an assist on one other). Orchard Park retaliated with their own fast-break goal exactly one minute later. With the score tied, Tomzak scored on another fast-break (assisted by John Klein). After back and forth play with no scoring, the Braves slowed the pace down for a final shot with 1 minute remaining on the clock. They took their time and Tomzak drove from behind the cage for his third goal in the first quarter with 0:18 remaining and gave the Braves a 3-1 lead.

The second quarter also belonged to Canandaigua. The Braves scored the lone two goals of the quarter. Tomzak kept up his strong play not only on offense but on the riding team as well. He stripped the ball on one ride and looked up to find Connor Henderson who scored for the 4-1 lead. Marshall Johnson scored the last goal of the half with a straight drive from the midfield. In the first half, the Quakers had difficulty accounting for cutters on the crease and on many occasions the Braves had players open on the crease. CA looked inside to the crease on a number of passes that just were not caught, but could have easily ended in goals.ca-op

Canandaigua scored the first two goals of the third quarter quickly with crease feeds (Henderson from Brian Scheetz and Nick Munn from Henderson). At this point, with 10:11 remaining, it appeared that the Braves were going to keep up the pressure that might result in a high scoring game but Orchard Park came out with a whole new team effort. Although the Braves won the third quarter (4-3), it was a whole new game as the Quakers outscored the Braves 8-4 in the last 22 minutes and played stronger and harder then in the previous quarters. Drew Belica and Kevin Lalley led the charge for the Quakers, each scoring two and adding one assist. The third quarter ended with the Braves leading 9-4.

Orchard Park's Mike Allaire scored (assisted by Lalley) during an EMO on a stick penalty by Marshall Johnson. This was the only goal scored in EMO (with seven total opportunities). Austin Rogers scored for the Braves when he took a hard shot at Ryan Cole in the cage that bounced off in front of the goal and after which he picked up the groundball and scored the second-chance goal. Lalley added another goal for the Quakers followed 0:22 second later by another Braves' goal. Gannon Osborn scored assited by Evan Roth after Roth picked up a groundball near his defensive restraining line and cleared the ball up to Osborn for the face-off fast-break goal. Osborn's goal was Canandaigua's last. Orchard Park added three more goals in the last eight minutes. Jeff Tundo scored (assisted by Matt Ferrino) was followe by Belia (from Ferrino).ca-op Tundo also scored the final goal with 3:52 remaining.

With 3:44 remaining Canandaigua was penalized with a slash, giving the Quakers their last strong chance to bring the game within one goal. Ferrino took a hard well placed shot that hit the upper crossbar and came rocketing back towards to midline and bench area. Two players (one from each team) started sprinting towards to ball to gain possession. As the ball cross midfield, the Orchard Park player ran straight for it, attempting and failing to pick up the ball. The Braves player made a smart choice and stopped running towards the ball, made a 90 degree turn and ran towards were the ball was going to head out of bounds. As a result he was closer to where the ball went out of bounds on the shot and was awarded possession. Many high school players would not have had the foresight to make that kind of adjustment and it was a testament smart play and knowledge of the rules that paid off for CA.

Canandaigua stalled for the remaining three minutes and denied the Quakers a chance to come back.

In the cage, Scott Bement finished with 10s/9ga for the Braves and Cole finished with 7s/11ga for the Quakers. At the face-off Marshall Johnson was an important element in the win, winning 10/14 draws and collecting eight groundballs.
