Fairport and Geneva among winners |
April 17, 2008 - Fairport avenged their loss to Canandaigua earlier in
the week with a 10-7 win over Penn Yan, Geneva made a dramatic statement
in Class B as they defeated Aquinas 14-5 while Gates Chili picked up a 10-6
win over Victor and Hilton beat Spencerport 15-7. Rush-Henrietta was a 18-9
winner over visiting Livonia.
Fairport 10 - Penn Yan 7
After
a tough loss on Tuesday to Canandaigua, Fairport looked forward
to battling Penn Yan today and ended up with a 10-7 win at home.
Coach Brian Hobart told the team in the pre-game huddle, "The next 48
minutes. That's all you've got to worry about....the next 48 minutes," and
the Mustangs took the first face off and controlled the first offensive set.
A very patient Raider defense waited, and allowed Penn Yan to move the ball
around the outside, while being very stingy with inside looks. Their patience
was rewarded and they took the ball down field, where, after setting up their
own offense, Eric Hislop scored with an outside shot from the right side of
the cage.
Penn Yan Returned 0:44 seconds later when Adam Trombley beat his defender behind
the net and cut around the crease for the unassisted goal. Sophomore attackman,
Martin Manilla made a quick pass to classmate, Brendan Saylor, alone on the
crease. Three minutes later Saylor struck again with an inside crease cut and
help from Connor Lowe. With just over two minutes left, David Foley received
a pass from Manilla and scored with a hard side arm shot that hit the net in
the top left corner. Manilla scored by himself with just 0:03 left in the quarter
from a fast break clear and the Red Raiders led after twelve minutes, 5-1.
Hobart challenged his young charges, "You're going to make mistakes, but
when you make mistakes do all out." The Mustangs rallied in the second
quarter, scoring the first three in a row, bringing the score to within one
goal before Fairport ended the half with a Manila from Aaron Jones cross-crease
pass at 0:36. Penn Yan's first goal (at 10:48) came as Mustang goalie, Ethan
Kamholtz ran the ball down the middle of the field and when one-one-one with
Fairport goalie Kris Sterzin passed the ball to Cole Castle for the open net
score. Matt Osgood scored on an outside shot and a pass from John Linnan who
also assisted on a goal by Castle who took two fake shots before scoring. Fairport
was the leader at the half, 6-4.
The break seemed to lift the Fairport spirit as their defense, which included
key assignments for Kyle DeRosa, Theodore Knowles and Dorian Wolff, continued
an aggressive "in your face" man-to-man
defense which made it difficult for Penn Yan's Trombley, Osgood and Castle
to get volume or quality shots on Sterzin. Manilla scored a man up goal after
picking up a ground ball on the crease. The Penn Yan defense, by comparison,
and with the exception of Kamholtz and Tim Dyer, seemed passive and often neglected
the poke checks that are a Penn Yan hallmark. The Mustangs scored at 3:20 when
Osgood worked Knowles with several rollbacks before beating him outside and
getting the shot off before the Fairport slide arrived. The Raiders scored
two more before the end of the quarter, starting with another by Manilla who,
after three Fairport passes dodged his defender for a one-on-one on the crease.
Paul Dancy scored with 0:17 left in the third when he cut to the inside and
received the pass from Connor Lowe, took two steps, and fired the ball just
past the Kamholtz's shoulder. The quarter ended with Fairport up 9-5.
Penn Yan took the score to 9-6 with a drive a ditch feed from Trombley to Castle,
but the Raiders returned with a goal by Jones who was alone on the crease when
he received the ball from Manilla. Penn Yan ended the scoring with a man up
goal by Linnan scored with a bounce shot and a feed from Trombley.
This was a difficult game for the Mustangs, who play a very difficult schedule
against the best they can find. On this day, the offense found it difficult
to move the ball and nearly impossible to win one-on-one. Shots were either
hard and off the cage or soft and in the goalie's stick. Sterzin made 14 saves,
and half of them were easy for him. The Mustang defense watched too much of
the game and the ball instead of their assignments and allowed too much inside
movement by Fairport. That being said, the good news is that this was not normal
behavior for Penn Yan and they will undoubtedly learn from this one. For Fairport,
it was a big win against a top team which will probably give them extra
seeding points for Sectionals.

Geneva 14 - Aquinas 5
The
Geneva v. Aquinas game was a story of two halves; Geneva's second half domination
led them to a 14-5 victory over the Little Irish.
Geneva opened up the scoring with a goal only 0:13 seconds into the game. Alex
Love looked cross crease to Eric Legott. This became a pattern for the Panthers
as seven of their fourteen goals were scored in this manner. Additionally,
Love became a major factor in Geneva's win; Love finished the game with 6 goals
and 5 assists. At this point, Aquinas was playing at the same level as Geneva.
Both teams were fighting for ground balls and were shooting hard tough shots.
In the first half the two goalies were 28% (Geneva) and 40% (Aquinas).
Aquinas'
Casey Vogl scored the first Little Irish goal with a ground ball behind the
cage and a straight drive to the cage. Geneva scored again with Jim Warner
shooting an outside bounce shot. Aquinas scored the next two goals to take
a one goal lead. The first was a sweep by Mike Gray and the second was a fast-break
by Austin Gorman (assisted by Anthony Bianchi). Aquinas led 3-2 with 3:55 remaining.
Geneva scored the final goal of the quarter with Legott returning the favor
and finding Love on the crease during a fast-break opportunity. The first quarter
ended 3-3.
The second quarter was much like the first; Aquinas scored the first goal to
retake the lead. Jasen Torres drove from behind at 10:21 to give the Little
Irish as 4-3 lead. The Panthers took much of the second quarter to tie the
score back up. At 4:50 another Love goal tied the score, followed by a second
Warner goal at 3:21. Aquinas once again tied up the game with Gorman's second
goal. Gorman took the ball behind and drove towards the cage, as if by force
of will, as he was falling he took a hard shot that sneaked past Kyle Brimm.
With 1:40 remaining Geneva took the one goal lead yet again with Love finding
Kyle Boncaro across the crease. Geneva took a 6-5 lead into halftime.
The second half saw Aquinas fall apart all over the board. Offensively, the
Little Irish took six shots in the third (one on cage) and three in the fourth
(two on cage). For another team this might be normal that this time of the
year, but the Little Irish have demonstrated in prior games that volume is
a key component of their offense. After expecting close to 40 or 50 shots the
Little Irish only produced 24 (Geneva finished with 37 shots). Defensively,
Kraig Heston played better in the second half with 10s/8ga. Heston finished
the game with 14s/14ga (50%). Another problem for Aquinas showed up as they
began to go down by a couple goals, the Little Irish kept getting more and
more penalties. Two unsportsmanlike conduct calls, as well as eight of their
nine penalties occurred in the second half.
Geneva scored the last eight goals of the game, four in each quarter, while
keeping the Little Irish scoreless. In the second quarter, Love took the ball
behind the cage, drove straight in, turned to shoot and scored a total of three
times. Late in the fourth, the Panthers had a triple extra-man situation as
Alex Gray was out with a Slash, Sam Torchia was out with an Illegal body check
and Casey Vogl was out with an Unsportsmanlike Conduct call. Geneva demonstrated
why they are the defending Sectional Champions as they played four solid quarters.
Although the Little Irish showed that they could keep with the Panthers over
the first half, if they want to challenge Geneva in the tournament they know
they will need to play all four quarters.
Kyle Brimm played 47 minutes for the
Panthers with 4s/5ga and Billy Craft played the final minute accruing one save.
Heston finished with 14s/14ga. Alex Love took 12 shots with 7 on cage and six
goals. Removing his six goals (and one save), Heston would have finished with
13s/8ga (62%); This more then demonstrates the major impact that Love had for
the Panthers.
Scoring for Geneva were Love (6g-5a), Legott (3g-1a), Boncaro
(2g-2a), Warner (2g) and Sean Bennett (1g).
Scoring for Aquinas were Gorman
(2g), Torres (1g), Vogl (1g), Gray (1g) and Bianchi (1a).
