Canandaigua, Geneva, Penn Yan Win |
April 15, 2008 - Canandaigua beat Fairport, Irondequoit beat Thomas and Penn Yan beat Schroeder in overtime in big match ups today. Pittsford was a overtime 7-6 winner over Hilton, Geneva beat McQuaid Jesuit 13-8, Livonia was a 12-10 winner over Waterloo and Spencerport beat Brighton 7-6.
Canandaigua 6 - Fairport 4
It
started out as a close game, played mostly in front of Red Raider goalie Kristoffer
Sterzin, but four goals in the third quarter gave Canandaigua all they needed
to secure a 6-4 win at Fairport.
The defensive game started off slowly with
Fairport scoring the lone goal of the quarter. Senior middie, John McDonnell
drove straight from a clear, sweepings gently to the right and scoring (unassisted)
at 8:36. The majority of ball time in the first quarter was at Sterzin's end
where he made numerous stops. Clearing and defensive turnovers, however, kept
the Red Raiders from getting many shots on the Canandaigua side of the field.
The
second quarter was nearly the same as the first, but this time Canandaigua
was the team with the lone goal. Senior attackman Connor Henderson found junior
attackman Tanner Scharr on the crease. Scharr finished with a touch-wrist shot
into the upper corner of the net. The teams were tied at one at the half.
The
braves came alive after the break and with more precision shooting and continued
volume against Sterzin scored four unanswered goals in the third and added
a fifth at the top of the fourth before the next Fairport goal. Senior Evan
Roth, who was a key member of the Canandaigua defense picked up a number of
key ground balls from his wing position of the face off. After securing the
ball on the first draw of the second half, Roth took the ball to the cage and
scored the first goals (unassisted). The Braves scored two more in just over
two minutes to take a 4-1 lead. Henderson received the crossing feed from senior
middie Andrew Knoblauch for a goal at 11:08 and scored again at 9:56 on a flip
pass from Nick Mumm. Mumm ended the scoring in the third with his unassisted
goal, cutting from behind the cage for a shot just past the goal line extended.
Down 5-1 at the top of the fourth, Fairport expected to return and started
a run of three unanswered goals starting with a man up goal by Aaron Jones
from an outside shot to the top off-stick corner and an assist by McDonnell.
With just over 5:00 left in the game Saylor sent the ball cross crease to Paul
Dancy who fished with a wrist shot from the crease. At 3:56 senior goalie Scott
Bement took a hard shot to the groin and left the game for 0:32 seconds, replaced
by backup Anthony DeLeo, who saw no shots during the substitution. Fairport
scored the last goal of the game at 0:11 when Dancy scored again with an inside
pass from Saylor.
In a game of two excellent early season teams, Fairport did
well to keep the powerful Canandaigua offense from scoring. Sterzin who ended
the game with 21 saves (78%) was key in this effort, but the defensemen in
front of him were patient and worked well together. Too many turnovers, particularly
when clearing, gave the Braves most of the offensive ball time. Canandaigua
longs sticks were equally skilled, but their ability to move the ball down
field and produce shots was far more successful.
Scoring for Canandaigua were
Tanner Scharr (1g), Connor Henderson (2g-2a), Evan Roth (1g), Andrew Knoblauch
(1a), Nick Munn (1g-1a) and Justin Tomzak (1g). Scott Bement recorded 9s/4ga.
Scoring
for Fairport were Paul Dancy (2g), John McDonnell (1g-1a), Aaron Jones(1g)
and Brendan Saylor (2a). Kristoffer Sterzin had 21s/6ga for the Red Raiders
(3-1).
Spencerport 7 - Brighton 6
In
a close one, it was Spencerport with a 7-6 win over host Brighton. Although
the Barons led after the first quarter (2-1) the teams were tied at the half
(3-3) and after three quarters (4-4). Defensemen Ty Cannan scored Brighton's
first goal. Freshman LSM Dan Pierce scored on man up for his first varsity
goal. The Rangers countered with goals by Nick Fischer and Jon Robinson. The
winning goal was scored with 2:11 left in the last quarter by Spencerport's
Jon Robinson.
Scoring for Spencerport were Jon Robinson (3g-2a), Mick Fischer
(2g), Kyle Mark (1g-1a), Rich LaRock (2a) and Kyle Breach (1g). Mike Palvino
made 21s/6ga for the Rangers (3-2).
Scoring for Brighton were Ty Cannan (1g),
Dylan Brannon (1g), Mark Henrichs (1a), Matt Fedick (3g), Dan Pierce (1g) and
C.J. Wool (1a). Kyle Hohmann made 14s/7ga for Brighton (0-5).
Penn Yan 8 - Schroeder 7 OT
Eighth
grader Jordan Owen scored the game winning goal for Penn
Yan in overtime for
the second time this season as the Mustangs defeated Webster Schroeder 8-7.
Schroeder scored first when Cody Consul took a side-arm shot from up top and
the ball cleared above the stick of Ethan Kamholtz. Consul finished the game
with 3 goals for the Warriors. Penn Yan tied the score at one with a goal from
Brendan Minor, who dodged straight in towards the goal. The final goal of the
first quarter was by Schroeder. On an extra-man opportunity, Nick Mooney found
Chris Mason. Schroeder scored two EMO goals on three opportunities. The first
quarter ended 2-1.
Schroeder continued their scoring, as Consul was hit on the crease and after
ducking under the defenseman, put the ball in the net. The warriors led 3-1.
Penn Yan scored the final two goals of the half to tie the score. The first
goal was scored by Minor and assisted by Adam Trombley. Trombley had the ball
behind the cage and found Minor open on the crease. The second goal came from
a fast-break. Attackman Matt Osgood scored, assisted by John Linnan. Linnan
led the Mustangs in assists with four. Halftime found the score tied at three.
In the third quarter Schroeder scored the first goal yet again when Mason took
the ball straight in after a sweep. Penn Yan scored the next two goals to once
again take the lead. Trombley scored the first during EMO at 7:45. The second
goal was scored from a face-off fast-break started by Ty Trombley, who picked
up his own ground ball and quickly passed it up to Linnan who found Osgood
across the crease for the easy goal. Ty Trombley finished the game 7/18 at
the face. Penn Yan led 5-4 with 7:36 remaining in the third quarter. Schroeder
tied the score once again with their second EMO goal of the game. Mason found
Mooney for a hard outside shot. The third ended tied once again at 5.
As with all the prior quarters, Schroeder scored the first goal. Mooney scored
his second with a top-side sweep to give the Warriors the lead. Penn Yan scored
the next two goals. Both goals were scored by Osgood and both assisted by Linnan.
The first was a hard bounce shot from outside (from a feed from the goal line
extended) and the second was a fast-break goal (the Mustangs second of the
game). With 5:52 remaining in the game the Mustangs had a one goal lead. With
4:37 the Warriors tied up the game and sent it into overtime. Consul scored
his third goal of the game (assisted by Mike Tota) with a cross-crease pass
to an open goal. The final quarter ended with the score tied at 7.
Overtime
started and Chris Topping won the face-off. Topping finished 11/18 at the draw.
The Warriors had the first chance at scoring. Five players took shots on Kamholtz
during overtime; Joe Matison, Mason, Mooney, Matison and Mason each took a
shot and each shot was saved by Kamholtz. Those saves were not all "gum
balls",
two were point blank with limited or no defensive presence. Kamholtz stepped
up and stopped each save to keep the Mustangs in the game. Kamholtz finished
the game with 18s/7ga (72%) and was a major reason for Penn Yan's victory.
After one failed clear, the Mustangs successfully got the ball into their offensive
end. They only needed one shot. Jordan Owen, who scored the game winning overtime
goal against Geneva, took a hard shot on cage with a feed from behind the cage
(Trombley), to win the game for Penn Yan.
Scoring for Penn Yan were Osgood (4g),
Linnan (4a), Trombley (1g-2a), Minor (2g) and Owen (1g).
Scoring for Schroeder
were Consul (3g), Mason (2g-1a), Mooney (2g-1a) and Tota (1a). In the cage,
Scott Tota finished with 5s/8ga.

and 5:03 by Max Gurowski and Nick Scalzo (assisted by Kyle LaVallee). The Titans

back and kept the Titans scoreless for the last 17 minutes while scoring six
of their own. Scoring for the Eagles were Wright (with two), Mike Beckwith,
Tyler Kleehammer, Micelotta and Greg Coholan.

with 3s/7ga. Irondequoit played Tyler Nash the entire game and he finished

scored on two and Thomas on one).
