Semi Final Games - Classes B and C |
May 29, 2007 - Waterloo (#3) used overtime to beat Livonia (#2) 11-10 in the only game of the day that was not won by the higher seed. Peen Yan was an 18-1 winner over Midlakes in the other Class C semi final. In Class B Geneva beat Victor 13-6 and McQuaid Jesuit was a 15-11 winner over Eastridge.
McQuaid Jesuit
and Eastridge played a close game, but the Knights fought the hard
battle and walked away with a 15-11 victory over the Lancers in
the Class B semi finals.
Eastridge opened up the scoring with a face-off fast-break only
0:07 into the game as Adam Sisson won the face-off himself and passed
the ball to Matt Driffill on the crease. Sisson had another strong
game, winning 19/29 (66%) and leading the Lancers with 14 ground
balls. McQuaid Jesuit scored the next two goals as both Evan Gallina and
Mitch Ritchie scored unassisted goals. The Lancers scored the next
three goals. Driffil scored with a drive from behind the cage followed
by Alan Ingrasio's lone goal of the contest. Ingrasio scored after
a broken clear and ran straight to the goal after picking up the
ground ball. The Lancers fourth goal was a cross-crease feed by
Brandon Moynihan to Kevin Mahler with 5:52 remaining. The Knights
won the next face-off on a technical and junior Corey Flanigan took
the ball to the upper left, just inside the box, and fired a rocket
at Eugene Ferrera. Ferrera, who finished with 10s/15ga (40%), couldn't
see the shot coming because of the sun-glare. In fact, only one
save was made during the entire first quarter between both teams
(eight goals were scored). The Lancers rounded out the scoring with
an outside shot by Driffill (assisted by Mahler) during an extra-man
offense opportunity for Eastridge. Eastridge led 5-3 after the first
quarter.
The second quarter found McQuaid Jesuit stepping up their game and outscoring
the Lancers 7-3. McQuaid Jesuit scored the first five goals of the quarter
with two unassisted goals by Ritchie and two unassisted goals by
Dan Sturnick. The fifth goal was scored by JD Ayer after an inside
crease feed by Ritchie. Ritchie and Sturnick led the Knights with
4g-2a and 5g respectively. The Knights led 8-5 with 6:58 left in
the half. Eastridge scored the next two goals as Todd Horne and
Alex Austin both scored unassisted goals. Horne's goal was an outside
bounce shot and Austin scored off a face-off fast-break. The Lancers
were within one goal at that point, 8-7, but the Knights added two
more goals in quick succession. Ritchie scored (unassisted) at 1:50
and Sturnick scored (unassisted) at 1:22. The last goal of the half
was scored in man-up by Austin (assisted by Driffill). Driffill
drove down the left side of the field and found Austin open on GLE
across the crease. The score was 10-8 in favor of the Knights at
halftime.
Eastridge scored the first two goals of the third quarter to tie
the game at 10-10. Both goals were unassisted goals by Mahler on
straight in drives from the top of the box. With 6:20 remaining
in the third the game was close, but on the ensuing face-off Gallina
picked up his own ground ball and scored on a face-off fast-break.
McQuaid Jesuit scored the next three goals to go up by four goals. The
last goal of the third quarter was scored at 5:20 as Nick Caton
scored on an outside bounce shot. The score was 12-10 in favor of
the Knights at the end of three quarters.
The Lancers had penalty issues in the fourth quarter earning seven
penalties including two unsportsmanlike conducts. This kept Eastridge
from being able to mount a comeback. McQuaid Jesuit won the quarter 3-1
and held on to the lead for the win. Ayer scored his second goal
of the night (Ritchie assisted) followed by another unassisted goal
by Sturnick. The lone Lancer goal of the fourth quarter came during
a slow-break and was scored by senior midfielder Nick Mormino. The
final goal of the game was Sturnick's fifth goal (also unassisted).
Junior Dan Caufield played the entire game for the Knights finishing
with 9s/11ga (45%).
McQuaid Jesuit led the shooting 45s/25on/15g to Eastridge's 32s/20on/11g.
Leading the shooting for the Knights were Ritchie 14s/9on/4g, Gallina
13s/4on/2g and Sturnick 10s/6on/5g. Leading for Eastridge were Mahler
10s/3on/3g, Driffill 8s/5on/3g and Moynihan 6s/4on. Sisson-14 and
Gallina-15 led their respective teams in ground balls.
Scoring for McQuaid Jesuit were Ritchie (4g-2a), Sturnick (5g), Gallina
(2g), Ayer (2g), Flanigan (1g) and Caton (1g). The Knights will
play Geneva in the finals at on Friday.
Scoring for Eastridge were Driffill (3g-1a), Mahler (3g-1a), Austin
(2g), Ingrasio (1g), Mormino (1g), Horne (1g), Moynihan (1a) and
Sisson (1a).
Geneva defeated
Victor today, winning the middle two quarters 7-1, 13-6 in the Section V Class
B semifinal match-up.
Geneva scored the opening goal at 9:57 with a goal by R.J. Gringeri,
assisted by Greg Bonney. Gringeri cut to the crease and Bonney found
him open inside. Geneva also scored the second goal as Alex Love
drove all the way around the goal and shot a rocket off-stick from
the top of the box. Love had a stellar day with 6g-1a. Victor scored
their first goal at 5:39 during a two-man advantage situation as
Andy Savage took a hard outside shot that was saved by Kyle Brimm,
but then after retrieving his own ground ball shot a second time
for the goal. Brimm, a junior, started in the cage for the Panthers
as well as playing for a one minute period during the third quarter.
Brimm finished the game with 7s/2ga (78%) for Geneva. Geneva scored
their own extra-man goal at 1:42 remaining in the first quarter.
Kyle Boncaro, found Bonney alone across the crease after his own
drive down the side from the top of the box. Victor scored the final
goal of the first quarter at 1:09 with a fast-break goal by Jason
Houtenbrink. Houtenbrink led Victor with 2g-1a.
Geneva scored seven goals to Victor's one during the second and
third quarters. Geneva scored first with another unassisted goal
by Love followed quick (0:19 later) by the third Victor goal. Victor,
after winning the face-off, called a time-out and during the first
play after the time-out Houtenbrink drove down the goalie's right
and shot left-handed across the goalie's body for a goal. The Panthers
scored the next six goals to round out the half, as well as the
third quarter (three per quarter). Love scored with a straight drive
in, followed by Gringeri (assisted by Love). The last goal of the
half was scored by defenseman Andy Torruella. Torruella took the
ball all the way up the field on a fast-break and scored. Torruella
briefly had the ball knocked out of his stick, but after picking
the ball back up shot a hard bounce-shot at Mitchell Liegerot, senior
goalie for the Blue Devils. Liegerot played the entire game and
finished with 9s/13ga (41%). The score was 7-3 at the half.
Geneva scored the lone three goals of the third to increase their
lead to 10-3 after three quarters. Boncaro (assisted by Travis)
scored the first goal on a fast-break. The second goal was also
a fast-break, this time scored by Love (assisted by Bonney) followed
by another goal by Love (this one assisted by Boncaro). Love's second
goal was scored on a crease feed from behind.
The fourth quarter was a 3-3 tie. Geneva scored the first goal with
a drive from behind by Love followed by two Blue Devil goals. Victor's
first goal was scored by Alex Rogemoster, unassisted, and Frank
Valenti, from Houtenbrink. Geneva's John Warner scored the next
goal for the Panther's at 2:25 with a straight in drive and a hard
low shot. Victor's final goal was at 1:54, Houtenbrink intercepted
a pass by goalie Matt Schutz, and after a quick cradle shot the
ball at the open net, but Schutz was able to extend his stick and
stop the shot. On the ensuing clear attempt, the ball was incepted
again, this time by Savage, who scored on this attempt. Schutz finished
the game with 4s/4ga (50%) for the Panthers. The final Geneva goal
was scored with only 0:30 left as Gringeri looked towards the crease
and found Bonney open.
Geneva out shot Victor 44-34. Leading the shooting for the Panthers
were Love 10s/7on/6g, Gringeri 8s/3on/2g, Jim Warner 7s/3on and
John Warner 7s/3on/1g. Victor's Houtenbrink 8s/5on/2g and Valenti
6s/2on/1g led the shooting for the Blue Devils.
The Panthers won the ground ball battle 51-35. Leading
for the Panthers were Boncaro-8, Travis-6, Gringeri-6 and Torruella-6.
The Blue Devils were led by Houtenbrink-6, Hearn-6, Rogemoster-5.
Scoring for Geneva were Love (6g-1a), Bonney (2g-2a), Gringeri
(2g-1a), Boncaro (1g-2a), Warner (1g), Torruella (1g) and Travis
(1a). Geneva will play McQuaid Jesuit on Friday in the finals.

Valenti (1g).
Waterloo defeated Livonia in double
overtime to move on to face Penn Yan in the finals on Friday.
Livonia
reported the final score at 11-10 with scoring from Tyler Russell
(1g-3a), Brian Sciera (3g), Matt Girolmo (2g), Chris Bausch (2g),
Cameron Ross (1g-1a), Jeff Wester (2a) and Taylor Oren (1g). Sophomore
Justin Becker finished the game with 11s/11ga (50%) for the Bulldogs.
Waterloo
reported the final score at 12-11 with scoring from Josh Mateo (6g),
Rob Goodenow (2g), Nelson Boyd (2g), Jeff Wadhams (1g), Dylan Chilson
(1g), Mike Ruiz (1a) and Curtis Brosius (1a). Junior Shawn Andrus
finished with 9s/11ga (45%) for the Indians.
Penn Yan was the 18-1 winner over Midlakes in the upper
bracket semi finals of the Class C tournament. Scoring for the Mustangs
were Adam Trombley (4g-4a), Matt Osgood (2g-1a), Ryan Cook (1g),
John Linnan (1g), Chris carlson (2a), Brandon trombley (2g-1a),
Dan Wolfe (1g-1a), Brendan Minor (1a), Preston Maciejewski (2g),
Josh Perrault (2g), Josh Plumlee (1g) and Mike Manley (2g-1a) who also picked up 14 gb's. Ty Trombley won
18/20 faceoffs. RJ Wickham had 10s, Justin Galusha had 2s and Ethan kamoholtz had 1s for the Mustang who will see Waterloo in
the finals on Friday.
Glen Stevenson scored 1g and Jared Schoonerman made 12 saves for midlakes.
