Out bracket Games - Class A |
May 22, 2007 - All but one game in the Class A out bracket round was won by the higher seed and that one exception saw a determined Pittsford (11th) beat Rush-Henrietta (#6) and a exciting and very close game.
In
what was nearly a perfect back and forth game, Pittsford,
the 11th seed, defeated
#6 Rush-Henrietta 11-10.
The Royal Comets scored the first three goals, and set the pace
for a blow-out; but the Panthers would not be contained. R-H junior,
Ryan Leonard scored 0:25 into the game as he drove straight into
the goal and shot a side-arm rocket low and away on junior Brendan
Green. Senior Justin Rose scored the next goal on a top side sweep
at 8:44. The third R-H goal was a crease feed by Brian Hantzis to
Matt Moran. Moran led all scorers with 4g. Of the twenty-one goals
only seven were assisted (four for RH, three for Pittsford) and
much of today's game was one-on-one run-and-gun shooting by both
teams. Pittsford scored with no time left on the clock when Brett
Bridges took a hard outside shot that found the back of the net.
Bridges led Pittsford scorers with 3g-2a. The score was 3-1 at the
end of the first quarter.
The Panthers scored the first goal of the second quarter with 1:09
into play when Conor McDermott came from behind the cage to score
near-side high on senior Matt McShea. The next goal, the first of
many tying goals, was scored in man-up by Bridges, assisted by Cam
Edmiston, as he cut through the middle of the defense to find the
ball high on the left side. The extra-man opportunities were a major
asset for the Panthers, who scored 3/4. The only man-up the Panthers
failed to score on was the final penalty with 1:04 remaining and
they attempted to hold the ball. The Panthers took their first lead
of the game when Edmiston dodged inside and shot a hard bounce shot
from the crease at 5:44. R-H tied the game only 0:38 later as Moran
scored his second goal on a drive from behind the cage.
The second quarter continued with action as only 0:27 had passed
before Pittsford took the lead again. Bridges subbed onto the field,
received the ball, and drove to the goal shooting a side-arm rocket
to the upper right corner. Bridges led the Panthers in shooting,
taking eight shots, only three of which hit the cage but all three
scored. Another 0:35 was played and the game was tied again, as
Rose drove straight at the cage and scored the 5-5 goal. Pittsford
wasted no time, scoring only 0:07 later after a penalty was assessed
during the face-off. Bridges assisted Chris Kist on an outside shot
turned goal. Kist, who is usually the most prolific shooter for
the Panthers, only took 4s/3on/1g in today's game. Rush-Henrietta's
next goal was scored by Colin Cornaire on a turn around jump shot
(assisted by Leonard). Pittsford score one more goal in the second
quarter to take the one goal lead going into the half. With 0:17
remaining on the clock Doug Milano-Johnson scored (assisted by Bridges)
ending the quarter with a score of 7-6 at halftime.
One again, the Royal Comets tied the game yet again only 0:45 into
the third quarter. Rose drove from behind and shot high side to
score his third and final goal of the game. The Panthers continued
the tying trend scoring the go-ahead goal again, but this time added
another goal for good measure. The first goal was scored during
man-up as McDermott caught the ball on the crease and dodged three
defensemen before finding the back of the net. The other goal was
scored by Edmiston on a straight in drive. Rush-Henrietta came back
to within one with a goal from Moran (assisted by Cornaire). Edmiston
scored his third goal of the game on a beautiful play. He drove
from behind the cage, faking high (which caused McShea to go high,
then drop his stick) then going high. McDermott added the final
Panther goal with 4:19 left in the third quarter to go up by three
goals. The Royal Comets called a time-out to slow down the offense
and to try to regroup. Although it stopped the Panther offense,
the Panther defense never allowed R-H to tie the game again. The
third quarter ended 11-8 in favor of the Panthers.
Rush-Henrietta scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter at
3:20 and 0:46. The first goal was on a drive by Nate Delone. With
1:04 remaining in play the Royal Comets were assessed a slashing
penalty. The Panthers called a time-out. Pittsford was attempting
to slow the ball down and run out the penalty for the two goal win.
However, while having to keep the ball in the box, senior defensemen
Jake Messimer stripped the ball from Edmiston and upon picking up
his own ground ball, took the ball the entire way down the field.
Messimer quickly passed the ball to Hantzis who looked ahead to
Moran who scored the final Royal Comet goal (man-down) with 0:46
remaining. Messimer was extremely effective during the entire game,
making not only five one-on-one takes from various Pittsford players,
but picking up 15 ground balls and a winning 6/15 face-offs.
Freshman James Purpura won the ensuing face-off for the Panthers.
Purpura won 14/24 (58%) of the face-off's taking all of the draws
for the Panthers. The Royal Comets had one more chance, after another
stripped ball and clear, but could not capitalize on the opportunity.
With only a few second remaining Pittsford senior captain Steve
Vaughan stripped the ball and sent it flying towards the offensive
end of the field and the clock ran down to zero.
The Royal Comets were 0/4 on extra-man opportunities. The shooting
was also in favor of the Royal Comets who took 44 (compared to 38
for Pittsford), with 24 on cage (22 on), as well as, 39-33 in ground
balls. Rush-Henrietta also had 10 takes (with 7 LOBs) to Pittsford's
7 takes (12 LOBs). Clearing was rather close with Rush-Henrietta
at 73% and Pittsford at 68%.
Seniors played exceptionally well for both teams with 8/11 Panther
goals and 7/10 Royal Comet goals coming from the senior class.
In the cage, McShea finished his final game as a Royal Comet with
