Saturday - Last Games in Regular Season |
May 19, 2007 - For the first time in eleven years, Geneva posted a win against Penn Yan as they won 8-4 at home on the last day of the regular season.
Matt
Schutz's excitement could early be contained as he realized that
in his last regular season game, his Geneva Panthers
after an eleven year streak, finally beat Finger Lakes powerhouse,
Penn Yan on his home field. Geneva scored the first goal and although
the Mustangs tied at one and three, the Panthers never fell behind
on their way to an 8-4 win.
Geneva scored first, when at 10:54, John Warner scored the first
of his two goals in the game (unassisted). Penn Yan came right back
scoring one minute later when Chris Carlson scored his unassisted
goal to tie the game at one. Much of the game was spent in moving
the ball up and down the field as the defensive units knocked down,
intercepted and otherwise forced turnovers. At 4:35 senior middie
R.J. Gringeri scored the first of his three goals with an assist
from sophomore attackman Alex Love. It was the only assisted goal
by Geneva in the game. The Panthers were ahead 2-1 at the end of
twelve minutes.
The Panthers started the second quarter with an unassisted goal
by Love when dodged his defended behind the goal and shot high,
while Penn Yan goalie, RJ Wickham went for the low shot at 9:12,
putting Geneva up 3-1. Sophomore attackman, Cole Castle scored after
the next face off. As he drove to the net, he was knocked down hard
by the Geneva defense, but maintained control of the ball and made
the shot while sitting on the ground. Schutz came out of the net
to play the ball, leaving the net nearly open for Castle. After
almost seven and a half minutes of transition play, punctuated by
a number of dramatic "big stops" by Wickham, Castle scored
again, this time with an assist from freshman attackman Adam Trombley.
Penn Yan moved the ball quickly from behind to set up a shallow
wing shot by Castle from the right. The goal tied the game at three
for the halftime break.
The third quarter belonged to the Panthers who scored three goals,
while holding the Mustangs scoreless. Junior middie, Jim Warner
had a successful dodged from out front and scored with a bounce
shot at 11:36. John Warner was next, after an eight minute scoring
drought. He received the ball as he entered the field during free
substitution and dodged his man on the outside, before firing a
a hard bounce shot at the feet of Wickham. Kyle Boncaro scored at
1:01 for the Panthers giving them a 6-3 lead after three quarters.
The combination of a number of big saves by Schutz and a lack of
ball time and shooting volume hurt the Mustangs, who would often
loose possession of the ball quickly after their defensive team
would clear the ball. The Geneva defense focused on ground ball
production and gained a number of momentum-stealing possessions
from Penn Yan's offense.
There was no scoring in the fourth quarter until John Warner scored
the first of three in a row for Geneva at the 4:43 mark. While
Penn Yan moved to tight man-to-man, Warner pulled his defensive
midfielder to the outside, where he dodged him and set himself up
for a one-one-one with the goalie and scored on a high shot to the
left. Gringeri took improved the Panther margin to 5 with his unassisted
goal at 2:15. The Mustangs scored the last goal of the game at 0:43
and in man up when John Linnan fed Matt Osgood who scored on a side
arm shot rising high in the goal.

The
game began with exciting play and a strong performance by Midlakes in
the third quarter led to their ultimate victory over Mynderse 15-9.
Scoring opened in the first minute as Anthony Clark scored from
his own rebound (saved by junior goalie Jared Schoonerman) at 11:08.
Midlakes took the next nine minutes and scored four goals. Bounce
shots seemed to be the key for the Screaming Eagles as nine of their
15 goals were scored in that manner. Overall, Midlakes used the
same play to score six goals (a man drives from behind, draws the
double, and the newly open outside man shoots a bounce shot). Three
of the first four goals were scored by Nick Newland. Newland, a
junior midfielder, led all scorers with 5g-1a. Newland's (and the
team's) first goal came at 9:40 with a drive straight at the goal
and a bounce shot over senior Ben LaValley. LaValley played the
first half for the Blue Devils finishing with 2s/6ga.
The next goal utilized the drive from behind as Rob Barber drove
in and found Newland for the outside bounce shot. The next goal
was scored from a fast-break as Tyler Brooks-Lambert assisted Glen
Stevenson. Both Stevenson and Brooks-Lambert led the team in total
points with 4g-3a each. Stevenson, Brooks-Lambert and Newland each
led a different category for the team's season totals (Newland -
40g, Brooks-Lambert - 24a, Stevenson - 56 points). The fourth Screaming
Eagles goal was again their drive to a bounce shot with Brooks-Lambert
feeding an open Newland. Mynderse scored their second goal with
1:55 remaining as Clark scored his second goal of the game. Clark
drove from the top and took on four or five different defenseman
and after some fancy stick-work finished with a shot low, to find
the back of the crease. The final goal of the first quarter was
scored by Midlakes with 0:49 remaining. Brooks-Lambert scored his
first goal of the game (assisted by Ben Uveges) with their drive
to a bounce pass play. The first quarter finished with Midlakes
ahead 5-2.
The second quarter was Mynderse all the way. Mynderse scored the
opening goal from a face-off fast-break by Kevin McCully. McCully
was 13/18 (72%) at the face-off. The second goal of the quarter,
at 6:32, was also scored by Mynderse. Josh Kurdziolek drove all
the way around the back of the goal for a bounce shot on the crease
that scored on Schoonerman who had a strong game with 14s/9ga (61%).
On the ensuing face-off Newland won the face-off and scored on his
own face-off fast-break for the Screaming Eagles. Newland finished
the game 11/20 (55%) at the face. Mynderse scored the last goal
of the half to bring the game to within one goal. A.J. Bachman scored
(assisted by Kurdziolek) with a cross-crease goal. Schoonerman actually
made the initial save, but after briefly loosing sight of the ball,
allowed it to dribble into the back of the net. The score was 6-5
at the half.
The opening goal of the third was scored by Mynderse
to tie the game at 6. Clark scored for the third time using the
same play that helped him score his second. Clark ran straight into
the middle of the field (taking on anyone who got in his way) and
after finally breaking free, found the back of the net. This was
as close as Mynderse got with Midlakes scoring the next six goals
to finish the third quarter up 12-6. At 11:01 and 8:39, Stevenson
scored two more goals from outside bounce shots. Senior Tony Pallidino
played in the cage for Mynderse during the second half and finished
the game with 4s/9g. Uveges scored the next goal with a drive from
the top, followed by three goals in a row for Brooks-Lambert. The
first and third were both man-up goals assisted by Stevenson, both
using the drive from behind to an open outside bounce shot. The
second was assisted by Newland off a face-off win by Newland.
The
fourth quarter was close again with each team scoring three goals.
Mynderse opened up the scoring with a goal from Kurdziolek (assisted
by Pat Churchill). The next goal was Midlakes third man-up goal
(also using the drive from behind, outside bounce shot) with Newland
scoring (assisted by Brooks-Lambert). The Blue Devils struck again
with a crease feed by Bachman to Dustin Luckinbill. Luckinbill led
all shooters for the Blue Devils with 11s/5on/1g. Joining Luckinbill
were McCully 9s/8on/2g and Clark 8s/6on/3g. Midlakes scored the
next two goals with Ken Patane scoring (assisted by Stevenson) and
Stevenson scoring (unassisted). The last goal of the game was scored
by McCully (unassisted) at 0:46 remaining.
Shooting for the Screaming
Eagles was mostly taken by four players (only three shots were taken
by others). Leading the shooting was Newland 11s/8on/5g, Brooks-Lambert
7s/5on/4g, Stevenson 7s/4on/4g and Uveges 5s/3on/1g. Mynderse led
the shots and shots on categories with 37s/23on/9g. Midlakes finished
with 33s/21on/15g.

HFL jumped out to a quick lead and kept the game close for
the first quarter, but in the end Hamburg (Section
VI) defeated the Cougars 11-5.
HFL came out to a 2-0 lead, followed
quickly by two Bulldog goals. The Cougars struck again which was
followed 0:23 later by another Hamburg goal. HFL scored again to take a
4-3 lead, but then the Bulldogs scored the next eight goals (over
all four quarters). The Cougars scored the final goal of the game
at 0:42 remaining. The Bulldogs kept the Cougars scoreless for 36:53.
The
first three HFL goals were scored during fast-breaks, and the last
was from an unsettled ground ball for the shot. The Bulldogs implemented
a zone defense for
most of the game which helped in keeping HFL off the board.
The Cougar's first four shots were goals, the next two shots were
saves; in total the first quarter ended with 7s/5on/4g. The remaining three
quarters totaled 21s/6on/1g. The Cougars had 8 fast-break
