CA, Schroeder, McQuaid Jesuit & Irondequoit Win |
April 10, 2007 - Every game was expected to be close today, and although day-time games cut into the spectator numbers,
many fans were not disappointed as the Schroeder/Penn Yan,
Canandaigua/Fairport and McQuaid Jesuit/Brighton games were won by single goal
margins. Irondequoit continued its undefeated run with an 8-3 win over Thomas
and Geneva demonstrated dominance over Victor with a 14-2 win. Penfield
won its first game of the season with a 12-4 win against Binghamton
(Section 4).
The
1:00 game at McAvoy Park saw Penfield win its first game
of the season by defeating visiting Binghamton (Section 4), 12-4.
Scoring for Penfield were eighth grade midfielder Alex Miles (3g), junior middie
Kyle Denhoff (3a), and sophomore midfielder James Dwyer (2g). Junior defenseman
Alex Nowak added (1g-1a) and led the ground ball effort with 8 gbs. Junior attackman,
Connor Rice scored 4g-1a, and senior middie Kevin Roe added (1g) while winning
6/10 face offs. Kevin Green added (3a), Paul Leonhard (1a), Ryan Regruit (1g)
and Matt Malloy finished with (1a). Sophomore goalie Brady Del Pozzo had 8s/4ga
(67%) for Penfield (1-2).
Scoring for Binghamton were Pat Joyce (3g) and Cory Campon (3a). Jason Langevin
had 17s/12ga (59%) for Binghamton (2-6).
Senior
midfielder Mike Barilla scored the game winner with 4:46 left in the
game to give Webster Schroeder 9-8 victory over Penn
Yan. In a game that was close throughout, Grant Catalino scored the
first of his four goals just
0:53 into the game (unassisted). Penn Yan tied the game on a goal
by Matt Osgood (assisted by Ryan Cook). Each team scored again to close
the quarter tied at 2-2.
Penn Yan scored two unassisted goals at the top of the second quarter
but the Warriors scored four in a row to take a
6-4 lead into half-time. Nick Mooney scored (unassisted), followed
by two more from Catalino, with the second assisted by defenseman
Drew Palmer. Andy Winslow scored with 0:14 left in the half.
Once again, the Mustangs scored the first two at the top of the
quarter to tie the game at six. Andy Winslow received the ball from
Catalino to give the Warriors a 7-6 lead at the end of three quarters.
Penn Yan tied the game at the top of the last quarter and Catalino
scored the go-ahead goal at 10:16. Adam Trombley tied the game with
an unassisted goal at 5:26. Barilla scored the game winner with
3:46 and la though each team had ball time, the game was won by
Schroeder.
Scoring for Schroeder were senior attackman Grant Catalino (4g-1a)
and senior middie Andy Winslow (2g). Senior attackman Austin
Orsini, junior midfielder Nick Mooney and Barilla each added one
goal while senior defenseman Drew Palmer (1a). Senior goalkeeper
Zach Marshall recorded 6s/8ga (43%) for the Warriors (4-0).
Scoring for Penn Yan were freshman
attackman Adam Trombley (2g-2a), sophomore attackmen Matt Osgood
(2g) and Cole Castle (1g). senior attackman Ryan Cook (1g-3a), sophomore
middie John Linnan (2g) and senior defenseman Michael Manley (1a).
Senior goalie RJ Wickham had 10s/9ga (53%) for the Mustangs (3-1).
For
the fourth game in a row this season, Fairport played to a one-goal
game, this time dropping to host, Canandaigua 7-6
in a morning game at Evans Field. Senior Jon Zacharias and junior
Ben Knapton and Evan Roth (8 gbs) had outstanding defensive games
for the Braves.
Scoring for Canandaigua were senior middies AJ Groot
(3g-1a) and Charlie Sauter (1g). Attackmen Jeremy Brown and Connor
Henderson each added 1g while Justin Tomzak (1g-2a). Junior goalie
Scott Bement played entire game and recorded 14s/6ga (70%).
Scoring
for Fairport were senior midfielders Tom Rynn (2g-1a) and Shawn
Runyon (1g-2a) along with freshman attackman Martin Manilla (2g)
and Brendan Saylor (1g-1a). Sophomore goalie Kristoffer Sterzin
made 12s/7ga (63%) for Fairport (1-3).
Sophomore
attackman Drew Coholan scored the first two goals for
Irondequoit and never looked back as they defeated
visiting Webster Thomas 8-3. The teams traded goals in the second
quarter and the half ended with the Eagles up 3-1. After the break
Thomas scored to take the game within one, but Irondequoit turned
up the heat scoring four in a row before ending the third quarter
up 7-2.
Scoring for Irondequoit were Greg Wright (1h-2a), Andrew
Hart (2a), Drew Coholan (4g-1a), Tyler Kleehammer (1a) and Kevin
Coholan (2g). Nick Kane added (1g) and won 7/14 face offs. Goalie
Zach Nash recorded 16s/3ga (84%) for the Eagles (4-0). No
report from Thomas (2-2).
Geneva
dominated in its game against Victor tonight, 14-2. The Panthers
led 5-0 after the first, 10-0 at the half, and 13-0 after three
quarters. Victor's first goal of the night came at 7:00 remaining
in the fourth quarter as senior attackman Andy Savage scored, assisted
by Ryan O'Connor.
The player of the night was Geneva senior attackman
Greg Bonney (5g). Three of Bonney's goals came from ground balls
right in front of the cage, showing his athleticism and agility.
Coach LJ Russell says of Bonney, "He has been injured the last
couple years, and it is good to have him back."
Geneva's first
three goals came at 6:42, 6:31, and 6:06. The series began with
one of Bonney's ground ball goals. On the ensuing face-off, R.J.
Gringeri (7/12 - 58%) won the draw, brought his own ground ball
down and put it in the back of the net. The final goal came off
a double and dump by sophomore attackman Alex Love, feeding Bonney.
Both of Savage's goals were on fast break plays
by Victor's clearing team.
Each teams used two different goalies during the
game. Victor switched goalies at the half. Mitchell Liegerot played
the first half and recorded 5s/10ga (33%) and
Cody Bennett recorded 5s/4ga (56%) for the finish. Geneva's Matt
Schutz recorded 6s/0ga (100%) and played for three quarters. Geneva's
back-up goalie recorded 2s/2ga (50%).
Scoring for Geneva were Bonney (5g), Love (3g-1a),
Gringeri (1g-2a), John Warner (2g), Willie Rago (1g), Jim Warner
(1g), Kyle Boncaro (1g), Andy Torruella (1a), and Anthony Fili (1a).
Scoring
for Victor were Savage (2g) and O'Connor (1a).
McQuaid Jesuit
was the 7-6 winner over host Brighton in a 5:00 game played in the
stadium at Brighton. McQuaid Jesuit led 4-2 at the
half and 6-3 after three quarters. Mitch Ritchie began the scoring
for McQuaid Jesuit at 10:44 in the first quarter and also assisted the
winning goal, scored by JD Ayer (with 1:37 remaining in the last
quarter).
Brighton fought
back in the fourth quarter, winning the quarter 3-1 and although
the Barons had the last possession they were unable to send the
game into overtime.
Junior goalie Dan Caufield recorded 11s/6ga (65%)
for the Knights while Noah Berg had 4s/7ga (36%) for the Barons.
Goalie play was strong, regardless of percentage, with both goalies
making point blank saves to keep the game close.
Scoring for McQuaid Jesuit
were Ritchie (2g-1a), Evan Gallina (1g-2a), Ayer (1g), Nick Caton
(1g), Dan Sturnick (1g) and Corey Flanigan (1g).
Scoring for Brighton
were Jake Anderson (2g), Justin Hillery (1g-2a), Peter Jeffries
(1g), Dan Hill (1g) and Ryan Conti (1g). No
report from Brighton.
