March 29,2007 - Sweet Home (Buffalo) and
Onondaga (Syracuse) were the out-of-section winners while Livonia, Pittsford
and Mynderse were the local winners in five games played on Thursday.
(March
28, 2007) - Penalties and faceoffs hurt the blue Devils as
they were defeated by Sweet Home (Section 6) 10-4 at Victor.
The Panthers scored 4 goals in man up including two during a 3:00 non-releasable
stick penalty but controlled a great deal of ball time while Victor
amassed 10 minutes in penalties. Sweet Home, who won 15 of 17 face offs,
took a 1-4 first quarter lead and although the Blue Devils brought
the scored back to a 4-5 half-time score.
An illegal stick penalty
(3:00) was assessed at the end of the half-time break, and the Panthers
went right to work, scored the first man up goal at 11:34 and following
it with a beautiful play with a with a pass from behind the cage
resulting in a cross-cage feed for the goal at 10:42. They held
Victor scoreless in the second half. Victor coach, Mark Foeder summed
it up, "Sweet Home came
to play today. They wanted to win more than we did."
Scoring
for Victor were senior midfielder Eric Willman(1g-1a), junior midfielder
Kurt Sullivan (1g-1a), junior attackman Frank Valenti (1g) and senior
midfielder Joe Coleman(1g). Senior middie Jason Houtenbrink added
1a. Senior Mitchell Liegerot recorded 8s/10ga for the Blue Devils
(1-1).
Scoring
for Sweet Home were attackmen Cam Cardinale (4g-2a), Sean Burns
(2G,2a) and Chris Covel(1g). Also scoring were midfielders Nick
Cavalier (1g-1a), Eric Schniel (1g) and Talor Heard (1g). Chris
Lyon made 7s/4ga for the Panthers.
Onondaga
(Section 3) defeated Waterloo 14-5. Scoring for Waterloo were Mike
Ruiz (2g), Nelson Boyd (2g), Josh Mateo (1g), Jeff Wadhams (1a)
and Curtis Brosius (1a). Goalies Shawn Andrus (14s) and Zach Bowen
(4s) split time in the goal.
Pittsford traveled
to Wegmans Stadium and defeated Aquinas 13-2 tonight under cool
but clear skies. The Panthers out shot the Little Irish 38 shots
(24 on cage) to 32 shots (16 on cage).
Pittsford ended the first quarter ahead 4-1 and
by halftime had increased their lead to 8-2. They scored two more
in the third and three more in the last quarter. Senior midfielder
Brett Bridges took a majority of the face-off's for Pittsford
and ended the night at 12/16 (75%).
After the game Head Coach Andrew
Whipple spoke about how this season was going to be difficult
with many strong Monroe County-1 division teams, including his
brother Craig's Irondequoit team, who he will face on Saturday.
Coach Whipple, "We had a good win tonight, but we need to
practice hard this week if we are going to be competitive in our
division."
Goalie play was instrumental
in the win, as the goalies for the Little Irish combined for 11s/13ga
(46%) while the Pittsford goalies combined for 14s/2ga (66%).
Leading
the scoring for the Panthers was freshman attackman Jeff Milano-Johnson
(5g). Senior midfielders Brett Bridges (1g-2a), Chris Kist (1g-2a)
and Max Kestenbaum (1a) were joined by senior attackman Doug Milano-Johnson
(2g) and juniors Conor McDermott (2g), Jamie Leone (1g) and Jimmy
O'Neil (1g). Goalies Brendan Green (12s/2ga) and Sam Dupra (2s)
shared time for the Panthers who advance to 1-1.
Scoring for the
Little Irish were Anthony Bianchi (1g), Jasen Torres (1g), and
Nick Berkompas (1a). Goalies Alan Antinarelli (8s/10ga) and Kraig
Heston (3s/3ga) split time for Aquinas who move to 1-1.
Livonia defeated
visiting Midlakes 13-5 in a 6:30 pm game tonight. The Bulldogs started
off quickly with six unanswered goals in the first quarter. Jared
Schoonerman, Midlakes goalie, kept their team in the game in the second
half with several outstanding point blank saves as the Eagles outscored
the Bulldogs 3-1 in the second quarter ending the half 7-3 Livonia.
The second half scoring shifted back to Livonia again, as the offense
stepped-up six more goals.
Junior attackman Tyler Russell (5g-3a) led
the Bulldog scoring. Seniors Brian Sciera (4g-1a), Paul Nebbia (1g)
and Oren Taylor (1g-1a) were joined by underclassmen Matt Girolmo
(1g-2a) and Jeff Wester (1g-1a). Sophomore goalie Justin Becker recorded
10s/5ga (66%).
Junior midfielder Nick Newland was the leading in
scoring with 3g. Seniors Glen Stevenson (1g-1a) and Clay Hemminger
(1a) were joined by sophomore Conor Hogan (1g). Junior goalie
Jared Schoonerman recorded 11s/13ga (46%).
After
a 1-1 tie at the end of the first quarter, Mynderse pulled
ahead and never looked back in their 12-5 win over visiting Greece
Arcadia/Olympia.
Scoring for Arcadia/Olympia were senior midfielders
Ron Hatch (2g-1a) and Kyle Dorman (2g) and junior midfielder Chris
Hellmers (1g). Junior goalie Zack Bevilacqua recorded 13s/12ga (52%).
Scoring
for Mynderse were junior attackman Dustin Luckinbill (5g), senior
middie Kevin McCully (3g-1a), senior middie Tim
Sweeting (2a) and junior midfielder Chris D'Amato (1g). Also scoring
were senior midfielder Pat Churchill (1g), senior middie Josh Kurdziolek
(1g), sophomore attackman Charlie Barbay (1g), senior defenseman
Pete Hawryschuk (1a) and junior defenseman Brent Lombard (1a). Senior
goalkeeper Ben LaValley made 13s/5ga (72%).
